Teaching By Example

In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness
Being a teacher and/ or administrator can be overwhelming at times. We wear many hats and within one day, we may see hundreds of students, speak with any number of parents, check tens of papers, draft letters, send emails, teach several lesson plans and attend meetings. When we face difficult situations or try to work within a limited budget, we may wonder if we are making a difference at all. Then we receive a visit or a call from a student such as James.
I do not recall James being in any of my classes as a student; however in high school, he would often get a pass to come into my advisory/home room class to do homework or study for tests. Because he was obedient and helpful, he attended our annual fun trip. James probably did not murmur more than five words the entire four years; yet as an adult, he introduces me as his teacher - the one who made an impact in his life. This makes me both proud and humbled. What did I say or do to make such an impression? Were there words or actions I wish I could take back?
I do not recall James being in any of my middle or high school classes as a student; however in high school, he would often get a pass to come into my advisory/home room class and he would do homework, study for tests - whatever my class was doing. Because he was obedient and helpful, he was also allowed to attend our annual fun trip. James probably did not murmur more than five words aside from hello the entire four years, yet as an adult, he introduces me as his teacher - the one who made an impact in his life. This makes me both proud and humbled. What did I say or do to make such an impression? Were there words or actions I wish I could take back?
In today’s scripture, Paul gives instructions to Titus on how to be a good pastor, teacher, and leader. First be an example - a model of good behavior and comportment. Be the person you want those you teach and lead to emulate. Be a person of integrity - walk the walk you talk about. As important as the concepts we teach is the daily example that we set. You make a daily difference just by being you.
Lord, thank you for entrusting your children to me to teach. Guide me so that my example is a testimony and a light to all I encounter. Be glorified in all I do and say today, in Jesus’ name, amen.
