Week Three: Living Surrendered
Purpose: 1). To explain that Jesus lived surrendered by being a Spirit-led servant and a trustworthy steward of God’s resources. 2). To encourage and instruct our students on how to live surrendered by being a Spirit-led servant and a trustworthy steward of God’s resources. 3). To explain how we do this in the context of our student ministry.
Outline:
S– Spirit-led servant

45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Jesus came to serve (for now, we’ll focus on the “serve” aspect of this point and focus on the “Spirit-led” aspect at a different time. Not that we want to disregard the Holy Spirit, but considering the spiritual maturity of most of our students and the complexity of the Holy Spirit, we will need to teach that in an entirely different series rather than try to cram it into half of one lesson).

How do we imitate that? (Application Points)
Apply the “I Serve” mentality rather than the “I DEserve” mentality to every day life
Pray for specific ways to serve others. God will show you who needs to be served and He will empower you to serve them.
How do we do this in ODSM?
Great time to mention Serve Our City this weekend
· T– Trustworthy steward of God’s resources
What did Jesus do?
Jesus lived surrendered by being a trustworthy steward of God’s resources
· A “steward” is someone who is trusted with someone else’s property.
A “steward” is someone who is trusted with someone else’s property.
1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house.
·
Jesus was faithful (proved to be trustworthy) to the one who appointed him, who gave him his mission and equipped him for it.
How do we imitate that?
Identify God’s resources he has trusted you with. This includes talents, spiritual gifts, time, areas of influence, money, etc.
Ask God what he wants you to do with those resources.
Do this now. This isn’t something you don’t have to worry about until you finish school and have money. You have resources now and you are expected to use them.
How do we do this in ODSM?
We provide students with opportunities to use their talents, time, etc. Explain the ways you are doing that at your campus. If you aren’t, pray about ways you can begin to do that.
Small Group Questions:
1. What would it look like for you to live an “I serve” life rather than an “I deserve” life?
2. Who can you serve?
3. What resources has God given you (talents, spiritual gifts, time, areas of influence, etc.)?
4. Have you ever thought about how God wants you to use those resources? If so, share some ideas.
