Philippians (Lesson 6)
one with God and equal to God
Paul does not state that Christ was the form of God, but rather that he existed in the form of God, suggesting that the form of God was the clothing in which Christ existed
Christ had the position, condition, and glory of God, the character and nature of God [WBC], the form and glory of God [TNTC]. It means to have the attributes of divinity [Pl]. It refers to the characteristics by which God’s appearing is recognized, the splendor of deity [Bg], not the nature of deity, although it clearly implies that Christ had the nature of God as well
He was willing to relinquish that existence of equality with God in order to come to earth as a human being [Alf, Ea, EBC, El, GNC, ICC, Lt, Mou, NIC, NTC, WC, WEC]: he did not regard his equality with God as something which he should hold on to. As such, this clause focuses the emphasis upon Christ’s utter unselfishness in laying aside his equality with God
of his own free will he gave up all he had
The cross was the punishment for slaves [Bg, Lg, Lns, Lt, Pl, WBC] and criminals [Ea, Lg, Lt, TH, WBC], a type of punishment not permitted for Roman citizens [EBC, Pl], the most degrading [WEC], painful and shameful manner of death [Ea, Lt, Mou, NIC, Pl, TH, WBC]. This is the ultimate degradation and humbling of himself [MNTC, WBC].
