The Great King - David Week 3

Intro

Recap

Week one was the things we do before we face the giants determine the outcome when the giant comes

Week 2 When we are alone, afraid or angry the enemy wants to destroy us.

This week we will look at the things that made David a great king.

He understood Preparation

David never felt Entitled…

Entitlement today isn’t a generational thing…it’s a cultural thing

Give me the keys to the car!

Even though he knew God had anointed him he accepted the season of preparation without demanding his position

He was “entitled” to be king…Twice he could have killed Saul

4 And the men of David said to him, “Here is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’ ” Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. 5 And afterward David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. 6 He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord’s anointed.”

what may appear on the surface to be a leading from the Lord may just as well be a temptation from Satan (de Jong 1978:178)

The simplistic idea that we "have God in our pocket" and know exactly how he relates to some particular situation. We should guard against similar sorts of speculative tendencies in our own living and focus more attention on obeying the clear commands of God

NLT reminds us that "the Lord our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions."

David refused to violate the will of God to gain the promise of God. [SLIDE]

Instead of daydreaming about the promise...ask the question what do you want me to learn in this season of life?

He was in a season of preparation

between 12-15 annointed

15yo – kills goliath

15-22 leads and wins battles

22 flees for his life

30 finally becomes king of judah

37 becomes king of all israel

David was satisfied to wait for God’s Will, God’s Way, God’s Time. [SLIDE]

David knew about moses 80 years of preparation…Joseph’s 13 years (for telling his dream too soon)

He Understood Authority (Kingship & Covenant)

Kingship

One invested with ultimate authority and power over his subjects.[2]

Kingship was a manmade office that God allowed, but they had authority because God allowed it.

He understood Authority came from God

Saul is encamped with 3,000 men...he's in the middle of the camp

His men again say look here’s our chance!!

[SLIDE] NLT 9 "No!" David said. "Don't kill him. For who can remain innocent after attacking the Lord's anointed one? 10 Surely the Lord will strike Saul down someday, or he will die of old age or in battle. 11 The Lord forbid that I should kill the one he has anointed! But take his spear and that jug of water beside his head, and then let's get out of here!"

He always refers to Saul with respect - "my lord, the king"

David didn't elect Saul as King, God Did!

The second part of authority is understanding covenant

Covenant

Defined

[SLIDE] A sacred kinship (relationship) bond between two parties, ratified by swearing an oath.[3]

Covenant and Contract Distinguished

Contracts

Covenants

Limited by the terms of the exchange of property ("this is yours, that is mine"),

Involve an exchange of life ("I am yours, you are mine")

Motivation usually are based on profit and self-interest

Motivation calls for self-giving loyalty and sacrificial love.

Contracts are temporary

Covenant bonds are permanent, even intergenerational[4]

WHy did God treat DAVID’S AND Saul’s sins differently?

The answer … covenant consistency or inconsistency reflected in their lives, as well as in the character of their attitudes after they had sinned.

Saul Made excuses and justified why (; , , ).

David confessed and repented ("I have sinned against the Lord," ; cf. , ).

It is for this reason that David is termed a "man after [God's] own heart" (; ).

It was David's desire to serve the Lord faithfully, even though his obedience was far from perfect.[5]

David understood preparation, he understood authority and finally he understood real leadership is servant leadership

David at Hebron

[SLIDE] Then all the tribes of Israel went to David at Hebron and told him, "We are your own flesh and blood. 2 In the past, when Saul was our king, you were the one who really led the forces of Israel. And the Lord told you, ‘You will be the shepherd of my people Israel. You will be Israel's leader.' " 3 So there at Hebron, King David made a covenant before the Lord with all the elders of Israel. And they anointed him king of Israel.

He had all the power, all the influence...he could have just taken the crown

Instead he stops and "Before the Lord" makes a covenant with the people he's leading

I am a king, but I am not the King

a Sign of maturity is how you handle those you lead

King of Kings - Leader of Leaders

[SLIDE] 3 Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. 4 So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.

[SLIDE] 16 I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message.

Response – So what, now what?

Things to do if in a season of preparation[6]

Check your motives

Get out of your comfort zone

Learn to Understand Authority (kingship & covenant)

Be faithful and bloom wherever God has planted you

Don’t usurp the authority that has been placed over you

Realize you are a son/daughter of the King but not the King

God’s covenant with us is based on giving of his son’s life for relationship with you

Understand how to lead/serve

When you’re the most powerful person in the room: Mom. dad. captain. manager. owner, leverage your power for the benefit of the other people in the room.

45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
