Every Knee Shall Bow
Philippians 2:9–11 NIV
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jesus Exalted
therefore refers back to the obedience of Christ
therefore indicates that there is a spiritual outcome when humility is shown through obedience
the spiritual outcome for Jesus was God exalting him to a supreme position in all of creation
we too will enjoy spiritual blessings when we stay obedient to the Lord Jesus
The Place of Honour
God exalted him - gave Jesus an unprecedented place and position in the Kingdom
the Kingdom of God is above all
Ephesians 1:20–21 NIV
20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
right hand is the hand of authority and power
Jesus has been given this position so our lives under his lordship should reflect this position
the name of Jesus must be above every other name or else
the name of Jesus cannot be the supreme authority or power
Name of Jesus
the “name” is very important - it signifies and represents something depending on our culture
in the Kingdom of God the name of Jesus has been elevated to Jesus Christ
Christ was used in the gospels mainly as a n indicator of Jesus as the Messiah who came to set people free
the death and resurrection of Jesus had an immediate influence on how people regarded Jesus
Jesus became Jesus Christ - a title of supreme position and power
Christ was no longer the anointed one, the saviour of the Jewish nation
He was God in the fullest, taking his rightful place at the right hand of the Father
He was given - given is a significant word here - this position and so the title is fitting and appropriate
John 16:23–24 NIV
23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
Authority of Jesus
Authority of Jesus
the authority of Jesus is clearly identified by Paul
every knee will bow
every tongue confess
not just Jesus but Jesus Christ the Lord
the anointed one of God given all authority and power over all of creation
Ephesians 1:20–21 NIV
20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
Ephesi
in heaven, on earth and under the earth does his dominion extend
in heaven because that is where Christ is seated
on earth because Jesus came to save the world
under the earth because Jesus went down to set the captives free
Acknowledging Jesus Christ
as we come to end of this sermon, there is only one question
do you acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord
this means accepting that Jesus lived on this earth and did the things written in the Bible
it means that we believe his words and his statements that I and the Father are one
we are declaring that God raised him from the dead and that he paid the price for our sins
we acknowledge that He is Lord
and it means that we now must be appropriate citizens and servants of Jesus Christ our Lord
