there are 3 passages in the bible which our Lord has given to teach us about what a Christian marriage should look like
all 3 passages focus on submission
this is a bad word in our culture
no one wants to submit to anyone
most are out for self-fulfillment
when a marriage partner no longer meets your needs you end the marriage or the relationship and find another more suitable partner
9 verses are directed to wives: 183 words
11 verses directed to husbands: 211 words
the curse for sin: the woman will seek her husband’s God given role of leadership and the man will use his greater strength to bring her under his will
marriage was originally given as a picture of Christ and his church
when a marriage functions according to the scriptures it is a good picture
the reality though is that the divorce rate in the church is no different than that of non-believers
does this show how unhealthy the church is?
Wives Submit
- as is fitting in the Lord
- respectful and pure conduct
- as to the Lord
- respects her husband
Husbands
- love your wife and do not be harsh
- love your wife as Christ (loved the church and gave himself up for her and cleansed her in order to present her to himself with splendour, without spot or wrinkle, holy and without blemish)
- do not be harsh
, 33 - love as your own body - nourish and cherish
- leave father and mother and hold fast (result is one flesh)
- do not provoke children
- live with wife in an understanding way by showing honour to her (context of submitting regardless of whether he deserves it or not!)
