Intro: You can not serve two masters. It is quite difficult to serve two at the same time in different places. God calls for our attention. The Lord’s love for us should move us to seek him in all we do.

Our Worship comes from our deliverance.

Exodus 20:1–2 NLT
1 Then God gave the people all these instructions: 2 “I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.
Exodus 20:1

I am the Lord your God, who rescued you

We worship God because of he has rescued us.
Our love for God is itensefied by his compassion for us in times of bondage.

Israel was in bondage in Egypt.

Egypt was the place of their slavery. (I said was as in past tense.)
This rescue was the most miraculous events.

Let us recap what has brought Israel to this point in this text.

First they are in the presence of God before Mt. Sinai.
Before that they tested God and God still satisfied their thirst giving them water from a Rock ().
This time in God’s presence comes after Moses held the staff in his hand and Joshua lead the warriors against the army of Amalek. ()
This is also after they were released from Egypt after the 10 plagues and the crossing of the Red Sea that also saw the Egyptians swept away by this same Red Sea by the mighty power of God!
They are presently speaking free as servants of God and bonded to him because of his sovereign choice of Israel as his people and his faithfulness.

Where are you standing presently?

Are you standing with God your Lord and free from the bondage of sin?
Do you see your redeemer and Lord.
Job 19:25 NLT
25 “But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and he will stand upon the earth at last.
We should have the Lord our God first in our lives.

The First Commandment - You must not have any other God but me.

Exodus 20:3 NLT
3 “You must not have any other god but me.
Exodus 20:2 NLT
2 “I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.
This commandment is the first word of God that is also elaborated in the second word or the second commandment.
There is no God but the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
The Lord is God who is exalted and with all glory and power.

Why?

No other God brought you out of Israel.
No other God could lead you through the Red Sea.
No other God has claimed you and made you his and gave you liberty from slavery.
So your response to this awesome work of God leads to the second command.

Second - You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in heavens or on the earth or in the sea.

Exodus 20:4 NLT
4 “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
exodus 20:4

Show the Lord reverence.

Say his name with some respect. Put respect on his name.
Exodus 20:5 NLT
5 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.
Exodus 20:5

All our Love should go to the Lord!

We should bow down to no other.
We are to worship no other.
All our love and affection should go the Lord our God!
God will judge those who reject him.

God Loves his Worshippers

Exodus 20:6 NLT
6 But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
Because of God’s love toward us commands worship. God’s response to our worship is his love. Oh how we worship him who saved us and calls us his own. What a wonderful God we serve.

There is a blessing in Obedience.

Obey the commands of the Lord.
1 Samuel 15:22 NLT
22 But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the Lord: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.
1 Samuel 15:22
Notice how God’s love never fails. His love is for his obedient children because they obey his commands. God wants us to know his will for us and how to please him. Thank God for his loves and his commands for they give us life and guide our life.
