1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.

Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.
John 15:1-17
Introduction
Introduction
Is joy different from happiness?
Joy = Christian?
No, , Why?
There is no biblical precedent
When you try to separate it causes problems.
The Joy of the way of the wicked
19 Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the soil others will spring.
The rocky soil in
The rocky soil in
20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy,
calling the good news of salvation the good news of happiness
Is calling the
7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”
Poetic symetry
4 For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy.
ps 92
11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!
25 Let your father and mother be glad; let her who bore you rejoice.
Problem with saying God wants you to be happy in our culture.
Understandable why some try to make joy seperate
Jesus’ concern is not for you to experience some Joy/happiness, but complete happiness
Joy is sometimes used in a different way, such as in
11 And the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
Problem in American Church
This passage is concerned with you receiving the complete happiness of Christ

Joy from Gifts
Good gifts meant to bring joy/happiness
17 Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.”
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
,
Receiving wisdom, humility, then the crown of life ultimately
16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.
Acts 20:
God cleans us and makes us more capable of producing fruit, that is living obediently v.2
He grants us what we desire
God cleans us and makes us more capable of producing fruit, that is living obediently
Lk 6:23
We rejoice because of what we receive through Christ
We rejoice because of what we receive through Christ
Jesus said “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Jesus was full of dread in the garden
He obeyed God for the sake of the Joy that would come
The task was hard
He did not want to do it
He trusted God and obeyed
He now has complete and perfect joy
26 For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
Ec 2:26
5 You meet him who joyfully works righteousness, those who remember you in your ways. Behold, you were angry, and we sinned; in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?
26 For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Conclusion
Conclusion
Therefore, Christian joy is the great pleasure and happiness that we feel — whether or not the sun is shining, whether or not our team is winning, whether or not we are healthy or hurting — because our redeemer lives, because we belong to him, and because he is making all things new.
11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
