Acts 2
Acts 2
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
As we discussed last week, there are two things at issue here: 1) the gift of the Holy Spirit and then the gifts OF the Holy Spirit
Prior to the ascension of Christ, the Holy Spirit was available to dwell “in” man
“But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
The first work of the Holy Spirt is to bring us to Salvation
And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
of sin, because they do not believe in Me;
of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
We can say convict, reprove, convince leading to repentance
not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
He frees us from the law of sin
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
He gives us assurance
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
He gives us power for Holiness
Guiding us to truth
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
Teaching us all things
But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.
Gives life to our physical bodies
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Gives us power for service
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Make no mistake that the power spoken of here is the strength and determination for the believer to witness for the Savior!
But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.
I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.
They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.
It is within that power that there are gifts of the Spirit given unto the church to move it towards the goal of salvation for the lost!
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,
Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.”
It is God’s desire that we understand these Spiritual gifts and their operation in the church and life of the believer
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:
Next week we will begin the journey to look at what the Scripture says in regards to the gifts and calling of the Spirit
