Today is Pentecost Sunday, it celebrates the feast of Pentecost which was taking place on the day that the Holy Spirit was given to the church, and the day the church was born!!!
Interestingly, the birth of the church is identified the day the Spirit was poured out in power. In fact - Jesus had told his disciples when He ascended to heaven to go and wait for His promise to arrive, and to do nothing until the promise had come!
500 people watched him ascend to the heavens - only 120 gathered in the upper room to await His promise — and it was that 120 people whom God used to birth the church.
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
1 On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place.
2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.
3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.
4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
5 At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem.
6 When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.
7 They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee,
8 and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!
9 Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia,
10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome
11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!”
12 They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they asked each other.
13 But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, “They’re just drunk, that’s all!”
14 Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this.
15 These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that.
16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:
17 ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike— and they will prophesy.
19 And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below— blood and fire and clouds of smoke.
20 The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives.
21 But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
22 “People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know.
23 But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him.
24 But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip.
25 King David said this about him: ‘I see that the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.
26 No wonder my heart is glad, and my tongue shouts his praises! My body rests in hope.
27 For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.
28 You have shown me the way of life, and you will fill me with the joy of your presence.’
29 “Dear brothers, think about this! You can be sure that the patriarch David wasn’t referring to himself, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us.
30 But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne.
31 David was looking into the future and speaking of the Messiah’s resurrection. He was saying that God would not leave him among the dead or allow his body to rot in the grave.
32 “God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this.
33 Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.
34 For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit in the place of honor at my right hand
35 until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.” ’
36 “So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!”
37 Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”
38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39 This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.”
40 Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!”
41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.
43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.
44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had.
45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.
46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—
47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

WOW!
Most of us in this room have heard a message or two on this truth, but sometimes, we just need to hear the same truth again!!!
God wants each of us to experience and be filled with His Holy Spirit! We refer to that as the Baptism of the Spirit, because we immersed in the presence and power of God! There is an evidence given here, the first time it happens to the gentiles, and is referred to as proof by the apostles that one had received, and that is speaking in another language!
I want to talk about the BAPTISM --- not focusing on the proof, but on the immersion in God’s Spirit - because Jesus fully intended any who ask for it to receive it, and any who thirst to be satisfied.

10 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

12 Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not!

14 One day Jesus cast out a demon from a man who couldn’t speak, and when the demon was gone, the man began to speak. The crowds were amazed,
Luke 11.9-
37 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!
38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’ ”
39 (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)

One of the great mistakes that crept into Pentecostal churches in the latter part of the last century and even earlier part of this century, was to make the Holy Spirit our greater focus and lift up speaking in tongues (which needs to occur as it is Biblical evidence of the baptism) but became the center of what was sought after.
When the latter day outpouring that took place at the turn of the 20th century occurred, those who were filled and immersed in the presence of the Holy Spirit were seeking JESUS!!!
To encounter more of Christ
To know Christ’s heart
To be used by Christ in reaching a lost world
That was what was pursued!!! The SPIRIT is Jesus agent in this earth, His presence in our lives to be used for HIS GLORY and to empower us to live for Jesus. Therefore the glory needs to be on JESUS!
The focus became so centered on the evidence, that people literally were not seeking Jesus and yielding their hearts, but asking to speak in tongues! Speaking in an unknown language does not serve purpose but to demonstrate our yieldedness to Christ!
Listen to how JEsus speaks of the HOLY SPIRIT

Jesus wants the world to come to know THE ONLY WAY TO SALVATION - which is through HIM, and for that mission HE gave us the HOLY SPIRIT to empower and equip us!
It is a glorious experience that benefits our own lives greatly - strengthens us to make right choices in living for Christ and being effective, but it all comes back to the fact that JESUS WANTS TO BE GLORIFIED IN OUR LIVES AND IN THE WORLD!
11 Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.
God wants to use us and empower us with the Spirit - to glorify Christ!!!
12 Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ.
The power to overcome sin in our life and live righteously before God is to again - honor Christ and bring glory to Jesus!
We need the power of the Holy Spirit, so our lives will glorify CHRIST!!! So let’s seek the power of the Spirit for that reason!

22 Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but the other disciple with that name) said to him, “Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not to the world at large?”

The Holy Spirit is there to walk with us through life until Heaven!!! To take us by our hand and be our HELPER, our DEFENDER, our COMFORTER and to be present with us!
No one wants to be alone, and Jesus did not want us to be alone.
The confidence and boldness we gain from the Spirit because we have come to that place of being immersed in HIs presence and knowing He is really with us!
There is a difference being told someone will be beside you, and EXPERIENCING HIS PRESENCE BESIDE US!
12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.
Why is it - that are doing greater works is dependent on Christ going to the Father ---???
Because it is the HOLY SPIRIT moving through us that accomplishes those greater things!

Salvation comes once!
We give our hearts to Jesus, yielding our lives to Him, and yes we continue to yield more to Him the more we know, but at the place of salvation we receive a deposit of the Holy Spirit.
22 Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
20 As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord!
This was before Jesus ever parted this earth… when we are saved - He gives us His Spirit - a deposit!
12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.
13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,
There is a secondary experience to salvation — the overflowing presence of the Holy Spirit.
Those disciples who received the Spirit before Jesus left, hung around to experience the mighty power of the Holy Spirit overflowing their lives...

This same spirit is for us to continuously come and drink from His fountain - receiving again and again

Being filled with the Spirit happened over and over again - if you read through the Book of Acts, the church was continuously being filled with the SPirit over and over again ---
Unlike salvation that happens once, the Spirit was meant to refresh our lives and for us to seek out daily - a place to come into the presence of the Lord and experience HIS presence and empowerment.
52 And the believers were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
31 After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.
Just a couple of times the Scripture mentions the Spirit falling on them again.
There is a greater experience to just being saved, that is being FILLED!! Immersed in the presence of God - over and over and over again!

All this has been said because the day of Pentecost was just the beginning - the first of many continued experiences available to all believers to have the Holy Spirit’s presence overflowing their lives, empowering them to glorify Christ with their testimony and life, and empowering them to walk in the assurance that they are not alone, but God is with them!
