According to the Jewish calendar all males were obligated to appear before the Lord three times each year. While there are seven major feasts the Jews observed, only these three required them to go to Jerusalem and appear before the Lord (Dt 16:16).

“Three times in a year all your males shall appear before the Lord your God in the place which He chooses, at the Feast of Unleavened Bread and at the Feast of Weeks and at the Feast of Booths, and they shall not appear before the Lord empty-handed.
These three feasts are types of of a greater spiritual reality that would be revealed in the eschatological age, which we are now in.
The Holy Spirit has been actively working since creation.
In the OT, He revealed the Father, Restored relationship, and reclaimed the kingdom. His work in these last days is amplified b/c of what Jesus did, thus changing both His position and purpose.
Passover — this feast commemorates the exodus out of Egypt in which Israel was liberated from bondage. Passover, and the lamb that was sacrificed was a type of God’s own sacrificial lamb—Jesus. Also known as the feast of unleavened bread, the Jews were not to eat leaven for seven days b/c in the Bible, leaven is a type of sin, and not only would Jesus not have any sin in Him but He would also deliver mankind from the bondage of sin. BTW, Jesus died on the day of Passover.
Feast of weeks — also known as the feast of Pentecost. Pentecost was the second of these festivals. The day of Pentecost from Gr. πεντηκοντα meaning 50 was 50 days after Passover. It was also known as the feast of first fruits b/c it marked the end of the grain harvest.

Feast of booths, tabernacles, ingathering — was a pilgrimage festival celebrated at the end of the harvest season when all work was done. The feast was celebrated against the background of rejoicing for divine blessings, represented by the bounty of the year’s harvest.

Every fiftieth year was a year of Jubilee. Again, Pentecost was 50 days after Passover.
Each of these feasts was seven days in length and marked by a sabbath on the first day and a sabbath on the last day.
The dispensation of man non the earth began w/ a sabbath (God rested on the seventh day and made it holy).
Likewise it will end on a sabbath (the millennial reign of Christ).
So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

The Significance of Pentecost
Pentecost was the birth of the church and the eschatological age (or the last dispensation before Christ returns).
Just as the feast of weeks celebrated the firstfruits of the grain harvest, Pentecost marks the firstfruits of Christ’s harvest by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
It was the fulfillment of the promise of the Father to “pour out His Spirit on all flesh.”
This outpouring was different than anything before; the Spirit who was formerly w/out now was w/in.

This baptism spoken of by John is the new birth whereby the believer is filled w/ the Holy Spirit.
We are baptized in the Holy Spirit in order that Spirit fullness will always be.
To answer last week’s question, OT filling was temporary and is talking about a condition leading to action.
NT filling is permanent, but same principle—fullness displayed in action. Spirit fullness is always for a manifested purpose.
— filled in this verse (as in most cases) is a verb and not an adjective describing a state.
Why would Paul tell me to do what I can and then tell me to do what I have no control over?
“Filled” in v. 18 is present, passive, imperative.
Spirit fullness must be understood as the Holy Spirit being in full control of our lives; this means surrender.
We are baptized in the Holy Spirit in order that Spirit fullness will always be.
Church father Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem said, But He came down to clothe the Apostles with power. and to baptize them; for the Lord says, ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. This grace was not in part, but His power was in full perfection; for as he who plunges into the waters and is baptized is encompassed on all sides by the waters, so were they also baptized completely by the Holy Ghost. The water however flows round the outside only, but the Spirit baptizes also the soul within, and that completely. And wherefore wonderest thou? Take an example from matter; poor indeed and common, yet useful for the simpler sort. He still preserves the believer as he did in the OT, but but his position and purpose have changed.

Wind
The wind is emblematic of the Spirit’s Presence.
Wind is often associated w/ the Spirit in scripture.
The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Both wind and Spirit is the Gr. πνευμα. It’s the same in Heb. — ruach.
This does not yet reveal Spirit indwelling.
Fire
The fire is indicative of the Spirit’s Purifying work.
Fire is a purifier.
This can also be understood as the sanctifying work of the Spirit.

Tongues
Tongues were representative of the Spirit’s Power.
Men don’t just speak in another language w/out learning it.
The Spirit’s power in us, not to us.
