2nd Peter 2 • Saved by God: Watch Out For Heresy

back in my late late teens. I had the opportunity as a shirt with you guys before she go to Hawaii for 4 months to go to a Bible College there suffer for Jesus in Maui. It was horrible than to tell you Sunrise is it were gorgeous and sunsets that were incredible and fantastic. It was actually one of them. It was an amazing season in life. However, because we were poor Bible college students that weren't going to be there for very long. We found one of the easiest ways to get from where we were living in Kihei to somewhere really fun to go hang out was to put up your thumb and hitchhike and so I really found a hitchhiking was the best mode of transportation to hang out with some friends from high school and they shared with me a back in the day when they were there so, you know, that's why we're trying to go from pipe back into a kind of our kind of Holly is in that area and the people that actually drove out to a pineapple field mug then took their money. And I just left them there and so they're sharing this positive warning with us. Positive morning then we didn't take it to heart and I can recall one day my buddies and I we had put up her thumb and we are trying to get from where the Costco was back to Kihei and missed beat up old truck with a very local local picked us up and we hopped in the back of his truck and as we're riding along to our friends at one point in the back of her head. I start looking at the stickers on the back of his truck. And on one of them has the sticker that has the word haole, which is white person circled and Crofts.

If you don't know, that means they're not fond of us. Okay, and so I look at my buddy in like Pokemon like at 1 and no joke is this like freeway in Hawaii? Like a 60 65 mile-an-hour road that has some stop lights and we hit one of those stuff lights red light. We had our stuff in her arms and we just bailed at the back of that truck and started running as far and as fast as we could probably has reasons we heard positive warning. We are in 2nd Peter about ready to hit chapter 2, and I'm going to read all of chapter 2 to you this morning, but one of the things are going to read in Chapter 2 is very gloomy. It's kind of this gloom and doom as you read through it. I can put me a bit about just taste in your mouth repeater is going to share but you have to understand this morning is it is a positive warning for us all today. And here's what it says and 2nd Peter chapter 2 verse 1 false prophets also arose among the people just as there will be false teachers among you who will secretly bring in destructive heresies even denying the master who bought them bring it upon themselves Swift destruction and Men follow their sensuality and because of them the way of the truth will be blasphemed and in their greed they will exploit you with false Words Their condemnation from long ago is not idle to destruction is not asleep for God did not spare angel. When they send the cast them into hell and committed them 2 Chainz of gloomy Darkness to be kept until judgment. He did not spare the ancient world but preserved Noah was the seven others when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly it by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to Extinction making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly if you rescued a righteous lot greatly distressed by the sensual conduct the wicked for the righteous man lived among them day after day. He was tormenting his righteous Soul over there Lawless Deeds that he saw and heard the Lord knows how to rescue The Godly from trials to keep the unrighteous under punishment end of the day of judgement and especially those who indulged in the last of defiling passion and despise Authority. They do not tremble as they blaspheme the Glorious ones angels. The greater in might and power do not pronounce a Blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord, but these like a rational animals creatures of instinct born to be caught and destroyed blaspheming about matters of which they are ignorant will also be destroyed and their destruction suffering wrong as they wage for their wrong doing the count at the pleasure of the Rebel in the daytime. They're watching blemishes reveling in their deceptions or they Feast with you. If eyes full of adultery insatiable purse in the entice and steady Souls their hearts trained in greed a cursed children forsaking the right way. You have been given everything you need for chaining to a life of godliness. And in that thing God has called us to actually grow in the things of God by God. We spent the last couple of weeks talking about that. And then what Peter does is he says I want you to hear believe and trust me on this because at the end of chapter one, we have been given the sure word of Prophecy we had cast to the things that have been written down in the New Testament that our beloved Lord has given to us then he puts that pits that against what we're going to see with these false teachers today. Emoji saying is the word of God at the end of first Peter is the word of God for all people of all times of all cultures of all generations. The word of God is not going to fade or pass away. It is a Timeless truth that applies to our lives. It is not just circumstantial to a certain group of people that lived in that day and age and Peter is going to Great Lengths to make sure that we understand this this morning that scripture Transcends culture and time and that was when it was written back then it's still applicable to us today. I just going to get into this and basically talk about what heresy looks like and how it's going to tickle our fancy an appeal to our hearts. But it's deceptive and his lies amongst it. And here's the issue. We as a western culture. I'm slowly drifted towards even in the church. In a movement away from what truly the word of God says. To say well, you know what culture is pretty relevant today and this is a very different day and age and there's just things that are now acceptable today that were unacceptable back then and because of progress because we have made our way and develop ourselves as humans. We know better than what was written back then and there are now things that are being celebrated in Evangelical churches as well as in the World At Large that the scriptures actually condemn and think this is not right. And we look extremely oppressive and regressive and outdated and that we have the old way of thinking that does not fit with modern terms. And it's gotten to the point to where that actually even celebrated. We're going to look at this a little bit. But I want to read you first in Romans chapter 1 at the very end. It says in verse 32 don't they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die. Not only do them, but get approval to those who practice them. This morning. There are a lot of hotbed issues that Christians don't adhere to believe in or support. Mostly because we look at scripture. We see how it actually does not line up with what the word of God actually says. Hey, so what happens right now is there is a lot of Christians who holds the scripture as truth as being mocked and made fun of whether it's in public forums. Whether it's through news articles with her is through your friends that you just spend time with a dinner who are not followers of Jesus, but we tend to be the butt of many jokes because they think that our ways of thinking and living are too stuck in the past and it because we have grown as a society we are too then forsake those truths that we thought were true and get with the program of today. I think that our teachings and beliefs on sex and sexuality are incredibly outdated. Maybe even a little bit oppressive. How dare you tell me what to do with my body my life. I should be able to live how I want to live because Western culture views Freedom IV greatest goal in life. Is one of the things that in our minds we tried as the highest goal to achieve that you cannot tell me how to live. You cannot tell me what to do with myself if that is what it means to be independent and individual a truly be alive and whatever makes me happy. Allow me to live in that. therefore do not talk to me about a Biblical aesthetic. Do not put me under the Yoke of what that says.

That's wrong. What's interesting is this? So many things and ideals that people hold true to today. What are they notice or not actually stems from a Biblical mindset.

Guess I'll know Martin Luther King jr. Speech I Have a Dream. If you don't know what verbatim I couldn't quote it, either one of the things that he says in there is what I have a dream that all men are created. equal all men are created. Where did we come up with that? Where does that stem from? So what I want to prove to you and show you is that what I've talked about often is that what Society is doing is they're taking the fruits of Christianity while rejecting the king of Christianity. They're saying we want the good thing that the gospel presents for weed. Come under the king that presents as an here's what I mean by that.

And even in some parts of our country today, it's still not believe that all men are created equal is it we still today see both hard and soft racism happening in our culture in our society today. Did you know that you were out the time of History the vast majority of cultures region enslaving other nations and cultures? And somehow we had thought that we've arrived this new idea that we are created equal that we invented this idea. And now we have to put this idea on everybody but that idea that we were created equal is as old as Genesis 1 where it is God himself who declares that man and woman are created in the very image of God giving them digging the chief sanctity of Life seen it there's a value and Minnie in ancient culture. There are several creation myths that are proposed to different groups of people. You have different gods. They say created the heavens and the Earth. What are the widely believed creation myths with at the gods or up in the heavens and they got tired of working. So what did they do? They murdered one of their own and took his blood and needle that with dirt and there is a fashion man who wouldn't work for the gods know if that is your creation story. Do you know what you do with that creation story? You become like a pharaoh who you yourself believe you are a God and that you have the right to enslave other people to work for you. throughout history

There's been this version. To all men created equal the throughout scripture. It's been presented since the very first page and what we've done now as we said, we are all created equal but we don't want the God who actually says that It was God himself who first said all lives matter was God himself who was created out of Leo created out of nothing and not only that it is God who brings such a high amount of value in places it on your life in ancient culture. It was Kings who covenanted with other kings to make deals and peace treaties and packs. They didn't have a high regard for the people underneath of them. What does God do throughout the Old Testament he Covenant Watches with one man there an exodus he Covenant with Israel. He calls us in the New Testament Kingdom of priests. God is placing high-priority. I dignity on our lives and the reason I want to show you this this morning. because so many things that our culture has grabbed onto they wanted to say we just progress and we've worked this up in our own thinking and Imagination, but it's actually

God's truth is timeless it when we come in two places where there's things that are cultural runs counter or runs Collision Course of what scripture says culture wants to claim that it has the higher authority and what it chooses is actually right. I'm not talking about just individually here in the church will we have is often we taking things and we've gone too far with them. It was God who said I'll make them man and woman and I'll be married in the Covenant. Message within the confines of marriage a safe and proper and great place to enjoy sexual Union with one another and are closer goes. You know, I got your ride sex is good and great. But we're going to go ahead and use it and abused it and treated. However, we want don't tell us that it should have any confines placed around it because we will determine for ourselves God what is right or wrong or is the society we can do things like generosity and we say I should probably be but we don't go far enough with it or I know God has called me to to work. I just think that I'm going to step away from that. I know God has called me to love all my neighbors. But if you knew my neighbors would join me in this one. They're not they're not easy to get along with. Sometimes we don't go far enough. What I want to share with you. Is what people are really holding and longing in their hearts as some kind of Utopia society that gets along that loves and cares for one another. Enjoy one another and our hearts have this deep longing for something that we would consider is eating back to the Garden presents with God, but they're going about it in a way that God is not invited into it. Why is all of this important here this morning? Why a little bit of a backdrop to pay for you guys on this? A few weeks ago we talked about the dangers of the heart.

This week we're going to see the dangers outside that come at the heart. We talked about the dangers of the heart and the Heart Is as dangerous thing. That doesn't always want to hold onto Troost. Remember Hearts. We didn't sing the song prone to wander to forget what God has done so quickly for us. It's okay. We got to constantly preaching the help in the good news of the Gospel gospel to ourselves because our hearts they want to turn from loving and caring to Vengeance from Joy to bitterness from Hope to despair because we lose perspective. We bring up this example. That one time in a fifth grade when that one kid said you're ugly. You still remember that it's sticks with you? No matter how many times your spouse has said, you're beautiful no matter how many times your kids have said you are lovely. No matter how many times a good friend is coming alongside. You are beautiful and wonderful. We don't hold on to the truth or put at one time. Somebody came up to you and said God is just not fair. Sticks with us for all the times you actually heard of the Justice in the fairness of God. It's that one time is implanted into our hearts. We continue to remember because our hearts are prone to be iced over from the truth. heart hates the truth resist the truth

and it won't stay in the human heart. The cheater is shifting a little bit from that talk about the dangers of the heart to the dangers out there. The world is filled with influences which operate and aggravate the distorted places of the heart. And what does he say? He says beware beware. This morning. I wanted to open up talking about the truth of the scriptures. Especially in light of the outside culture perceives that it's trying to bring into society to two. Sorry Christian culture. Carrie C beware of heresies among you He's familiar with the word heresy. For some of us it can seem like an outdated term something that maybe doesn't even really exist today. Maybe you think of it as well back in the day. There was some heresies from different groups that came against Christianity are in the dark heresy that led to inquisitions and hard times and difficulties and Schism within the church. How much Peter is riding here as he says there are going to be false teachers among you that promote a way that seeks to benefit themselves and promise you the good life. Do Austin take the message of the gospel and they will twist it for themselves. The working definition of heresy is a view of Ultimate Reality which is wrong and therefore bad for you. Heresy is something that is about the ultimate view of reality that is wrong. And because it's wrong it's going to be bad for you. Now if I told you it's always raining in Southern, California. It's a terrible place. If you don't want to go down there the weather is just horrible in the beaches are always rained out you might believe that or not and if you happen to believe that God is not a truth if you believe it but it's going to hurt and harm you in the long run. It's probably not that bad for you to believe that California is a terrible place to live. Welcome back you three. I see you. There are snowboard Birds if I told you that it wouldn't. Arm hurt you when we talk about heresy. We're talking about ultimate realities things pertaining to like does God exist. Can you know he exists? is human nature good or human nature evil or somewhere in between

How do you decide what is right and what is wrong? What is moral and what is immoral that somebody has done an injustice to you? Are they done a Justice to you? Where is human history going? What's going to happen after death? Now in contemporary terms meaning today, we have dropped the word truce. You go to school you can go to colleges. Universities, they're not going to talk about the world in terms of truth, but in terms of values. And what they believe is values or truce are constructed. They're not discovered. What that means is is any society. Any culture is to determine what is actually the truth and that therefore then have the opportunity to change. Where are they getting these ideas from? You can't look at nature and say that all men are created equal cuz last year just last year. We had a dog come roaring through our field and take down a deer rip its neck off and then go trotting like you just won the lottery didn't need. It had no value for the life that it just took.

Where are we getting the idea that life is Meaningful and value? Where does that come from? Cuz we take her to choose from the Animal Kingdom from creation. I certainly would not come to that conclusion. Therefore. We also cannot damn societies and cultures to go said, you know, what sound lives don't matter. We have to actually stand for that if we're going to take it to the furthest extent and we're going to take our cues from nature cuz we Rose from mucking here. We are today or meaningless purposeless. There's really no value to life. We have to then say, you know what Hitler did wasn't really that bad. He was operating on his set of trews. Does atrazine constructed? therefore what they did was not evil yet yet.

We tried him or his regime cuz they're asking us conspiracy theories about Argentina. We tried him based on a set of truce that all lives all people are equal. Where in the world is that come from? Where in the world is so many of these ways in which we see this is how we ought to live generosity and kindness and long-suffering and where does this all come from? Computer same you really want to understand life. You have to understand what heresy is how it operates extremely important to see this here this morning. So what is 2nd Peter chapter 2 going to do for us? First of all, he says they will secretly bring in heresy. It was secretly bring it in. This means it'll sound good. You know that it'll sound really good heresies are never going to promise you the bad life. Nobody's going to participate in that they're going to promise you that you're going to get something that you want and ultimately they're going to undermine the truth of the Gospel, but he'll never really feel like that at first When we think of heresies. On some level we kind of think towards this idea of the ancient heresies surrounding Christianity, like maybe Jesus was a good man, but Jesus wasn't actually God that was a heresy that was presented. He was just a prophet. He was a man of God, but he himself was not God or there's a heresy where it's called modalism where the father became the sun the sun becomes a spirit and that's how we have Trinity. Or maybe they're the doctrines that attack both the deity and Humanity of Christ or the scriptures. And listen. I'm very concerned about those kinds of heresies our church who is and we are concerned with those extensively on them even last year. We looked at a summer a Biblical literacy the kind of heresies that I'm more worried about are these cultural cultural heresies that are slowly beating us down.

It is not just going to list but I just talked about Jesus God of the truth of the scriptures, but he says here is really the fruit of what you believe when you believe in a heresy. He says you will be all about sensual sensuality what that means is free morality free morality. Free morality is the idea that I can do whatever I want. However, I want whenever I want and you have no right to tell me whether that's right or wrong. Is that a part of our society today? You better believe it is you have all the right to believe whatever you want to believe but don't tell me to believe what you believe because there is no way you can place that truth. Upon me. The interesting part in that statement is they're taking their faith and belief system and actually trying to convert you to it will try to also dismiss you to yours. So they're doing the exact same thing. Everybody is across the y g from whatever they actually believed in it. Here it is. It's the Hallmark of buying into a heresy is this idea that you don't tell me how to live you don't tell me what is right or what is wrong? And it says that this will lead men to a shameful ways. You forgotten the second coming of Jesus is real you forgotten that there is going to be judgement. You'll forgot that there's going to be problems for those who deny the very Christ that has love and saved you.

Did Christianity has come become like a buffet? Will you pick and choose what you like from it dismiss what you do not like from it. Therefore you have actually dismissed the king. It's one way heresy Crimson. He says read. Funny re is listed a lot in the Bible. Never once never once has anybody come to my office for counseling about greed and ironic. We're so blind to it. In what parish you will do is speak to your read this idea that you have but you always need more greed is not just come in monetary terms with their Greed for power. Does Greed for reputation is Greed for sex this greed all over the place? And it's just it's that the more we scratch it the more it spreads within us. I want you just for a moment to think about what our greed says before God. just got you're not enough. I need something more from you have to be satisfied. You still failed to be complete think about so many of the modern-day heresy surrounding the prosperity health and wealth gospel. What are those all about you I didn't really feel like that. This was such a big issue, but it's still being pressed today in our society. So did I God want you to be happy healthy and wealthy and it totally forsaken every scripture that says all those who live Godly in Christ. Jesus will suffer persecution if forsake the scriptures that talk about this idea that Paul when he was sick and had this issue with his eyes. Can get healed from its Inception that God just wants us to have this best life. And so we get taught this and it comes through to us and we declare that God the end of the day. If we don't get these things, you're not good and return the grumbling and complaining.

James MacDonald He wrote a book talking about getting wedding sand on complaining and he said complaining is an attitude choice that if left unchecked will wither my capacity to experience. Joy and thankfulness.

How do I know?

She's creeping into my life. a greedy you feel. Do you need more and more and more to be happy and satisfied? You're not believing the truth of the Gospel. You are believing a lie. How do I know? Get over to sensuality free morality. No accountability. No one will ever tell me what to do. No one can ever step into my life in that way. No, I can't. Do you know when you do that? You can strengthen your own God and you are the god that is on the throne if you have a God that never disagrees with you. Let me tell you who God is and it is

Persistence in sin, talking about a struggle with sin because I highly doubt any of you brought in a sinless hour this week. I don't even know it was 30 minutes this week. I will determine what is good. What is evil its Genesis 1 Stop This is the fruit of heresy, but it's never presented in the negative. Alexander Nisbet, he wrote this about heresy. It is not strange to see that the most dangerous Heretics have many followers every are being a friend to some lust

Heresy, going to appeal to your last false teachers will come to you and I'll say God loves you and somebody who loves you they want the best for you. Is that the correct message? Because God loves you and our culture. We really think that Financial wealth and health are the best things for you. Then that's what God must be doing for you and God wants you happy Amen brother and sister. Amen. God wants us happy. So God must give us the things that we think will make us happy. That is a very juvenile understanding of what underlines Prosperity Gospel undermines the true gospel Or how about this? God is love. God loves everybody and if you don't love everybody that you're not like God therefore because you're to love everybody you are to actually accept receipt and believe that whatever anybody is doing with their sexuality, but it's a okay with God and bring them in and they can be just a part of his like everybody else. And if you don't you're not a Christian because a Christian would love like God loved it is a misconception in that and it's the idea that love never corrects. I love my kids to death and you better believe I'm in correction mode constantly. Love does correct. Love does direct. These are the subtleties that are Sweeping in the western church because we want to look like and live like ciety. Are we still want righteousness and hope and Holiness and we all want to get along and we want it on our terms. We created a God that never disagrees with us. Peter never says wealth is bad. He says Greta's Bad Peter never said sex is bad. It's the abuse. Peter takes these neutral ideas at times and it doesn't say there was wrong. It's the pursuit of these things. Just a second. Are the Pharisees? Are you believe? Are the shuttle live? I don't think it's the deity of Christ. That's an issue here this morning. I don't think our church. It's a authority of the scriptures that's an issue. I think it's the subtleties that creep in making to say, you know what this will make my life a smooth and easy if I just believe like everybody else. I don't to make anybody feel bad in here, but you look in their life and really question are their heresies unbelieving because ultimately it will lead to your demise and your destruction. Not your well-being is what I mean. Your life is determined by what's your ultimate realities are what you believe about your alternate realities said this before you do not believe there is a God then really you don't have to believe that all men are created equal you can abuse and misuse people all that you want I'm at Christina's expressed weather is the objective fine of women weather sat reading your co-workers, like garbage and trash whether it's trampoline over ripping off taking advantage of people with as being abusive with your language. Being abusive with your hand is being abusive with your emotions are all kinds of ways that we can take advantage of people understand that here this morning. And if you believe there is no God, we just want to go to the extreme when I say that it leads to we don't create or treat people that are created equal.

You have any regard for human life your whole life and your Morality In the thing that you live for is yourself? And therefore you have no accountability in your life because there is no God that you're going to stand up for what you believe in God repeater saying, can you believe that Jesus Christ is come died and resurrected been in the inverse order. The Good Life Halloween after this Jesus he is accountability in our life within also have a different view of the people around us because we do believe that there is a God and that this God exists what you believe affects how you live here. I believe there's a God you believe there's ultimate judgment. It's going to affect it's going to impact how you live. If you don't believe there's a God don't believe that going to church is important. You don't believe that this is the truth and God's word. It's going to direct your life in a certain way if you've dismissed biblical morality in your life, or you decided not have to be kind or generous. I was going to impact you. Do decisions how you spend your money that you spend time with their all based upon this idea ultimate realities what you believe about God may be good, maybe bad. And I'm not being consequential.

If you don't believe in God here today, are you believe God is a tyrant. Inconsequential is going to receive destroys. Heresy, destroys your feelings and behaviors are determined by your belief system. You grew up. You heard your whole life force come your garbage. You'll never amount to anything. That's what you believe in what you live out. It's going to have a huge impact on your life and died for you. He even knows the inner workings of your heart and your mind and everything has gone on in your life and he still pursues and he still loves you. He values you. He sought you out. She's gone after you and he says you're my child now. I'm loved and valued by God. He is my father. We ask you to believe that or not.

If it matters because you look at the week, you just came through you look at the week that you're about to face. If you're discouraged, even receiving a lot of criticism. You have to interpret your circumstances through the lens of God loves me or through the lens that he doesn't and that is going to drastically change how you approach your week. The criticism will either fresh you push it through the floor just people's opinions matter so much or you can believe the truth of the Gospel that God loves you that God cares for you and that you were his child. I'm not saying the circumstance automatically gets better. We all have circumstances beat. We all have pressure that's coming barreling down at us and how we think in the midst of it will change how to spawn through it. Do you know that God loves you cares for you and has made you his own? Sometimes you forget that truth, don't we? Emily forget that truth react all kinds of horrible ways.

What are we doing office?

Do you believe? Is heresy and taxes modern heresies the push us through the floor? The appeal to our Flash and they look attractive they're going to destroy us. Just two more things. I want to share with you before we close out. even in the church with a lot of people believe Jesus but You can love Jesus but still be Lord of your own life. You can love Jesus but still manipulate all the situations around you so that you are actually the one who's in control.

The gospel reorders are thinking and it tells us know it's not Jesus but it's Jesus alone. The other is Jesus and this heresy is in place all over Jesus and a good life Jesus and following the rules Jesus and supplementing Works to your faith. That's how you'll be content. That's how you'll achieve the good life. Once again, the gospel takes this and flipped it upside down and says, no, it's Jesus Hold Me Jesus and What's a prayer to follow following Jesus Jesus + Prosperity or Jesus + counseling or Jesus + overwhelming experiences after they want some kind of radical experience it when something big to happen in your life if he's Jesus and moments and yet Peter say no it is simply Jesus and Jesus.

This world as false teachers. And you were going to be assaulted by them. Anything that distracts or the tracks on the things of Jesus are going to lead you astray.
