Pentecost was One of Three major Agricultural Festivals of Israel

It was also known as the Feast of Weeks

Deuteronomy 16:9–10 NIV
Count off seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain. Then celebrate the Festival of Weeks to the Lord your God by giving a freewill offering in proportion to the blessings the Lord your God has given you.

Also referred to as the Feast of Harvest

Exodus 23:16 NIV
“Celebrate the Festival of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field. “Celebrate the Festival of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather in your crops from the field.

Instructions for the celebration of Pentecost

Its timing and sacrifices

Leviticus 23:15–16 NIV
“ ‘From the day after the Sabbath, the day you brought the sheaf of the wave offering, count off seven full weeks. Count off fifty days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of new grain to the Lord.

The “fifty days” (verse 16) gives rise to the term “Pentecost” which is derived from the Greek word for “fiftieth”

Symbolizing their deliverance from Egypt by God

Deuteronomy 16:12 NIV
Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and follow carefully these decrees.

Pentecost later became associated with Covenant Renewal and the Recitation of the Law.

Pentecost in the NT

It was observed by Paul and churches he birthed.

Acts 20:16 NIV
Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus to avoid spending time in the province of Asia, for he was in a hurry to reach Jerusalem, if possible, by the day of Pentecost.

Its association with the coming of the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:1–4 NIV
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

The Promise of the Holy Spirit

Luke 4:18–19 NIV
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

The Church lives by the Power of the Holy Spirit

Romans 8:9–11 NIV
You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

Power and Purpose are one in God

So, Power and Purpose must be one in his Church

If the Great Commission says that we are to make disciples by speaking of Jesus and by loving others in action, then we are given the Holy Spirit for this purpose.
Matthew 28:16–20 NIV
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Peter exemplifies this in his speech to those who questioned the importance of the tongues of fire.
It wasn’t about people speaking in tongues (or other languages), it was about Jesus!
The one who had denied Christ when asked by a servant girl was now the voice to the people about the living Spirit of Jesus Christ!

After showing them that Jesus is the Lord and the promised Messiah of Scripture, ~3000 people believed that day.

Acts 2:36–41 NIV
“Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
This was how God transforms fisherman, carpenters, doctors, tax collectors, and even a zealots, into faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
