Introduction

John 20:30–31 AV 1873
30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31 but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Purposeful Communication

John 20:30–31 AV 1873
30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31 but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Mark 16:15–16 AV 1873
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Preaching Produces Opportunity

John 20:31 AV 1873
31 but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
A. Might Believe—There is a chance to be saved, but there is most importantly a choice to be made.
-Aorist active subjunctive: Hope or desire of something in the past.
Romans 10:8–13 AV 1873
8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
B. Focus of believing makes all the difference: Jesus is the Christ!
John 6:66–69 AV 1873
66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. 67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? 68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. 69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
1. Just before Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead, Martha tells Jesus:
John 11:27 AV 1873
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
2. Jesus wants the disciples to say what they believe about Him and Peter responds:
Mark 8:29 AV 1873
29 And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.
3. Now Jesus tells them what to believe about Him in light of the eternal home He is preparing for them:
John 14:6 AV 1873
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Purposeful Living is a Result of Believing

John 8:31 AV 1873
31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
John 20:31 AV 1873
31 but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
A. Past believing produces present faithfulness and an exuberance about the abundant life in Christ. ἔχητε—life, might have
1. Present living in light of past believing:
2. Aorist active subjunctive is a hope of believing:
Present active subjunctive is the expectant living based on the past believing:
12.6.2.1 The subjunctive of the simple present - Ελεζηώηας, σποηαθηηθή
The subjunctive of the simple present shows continuation or repetition. The action expressed by the verb is ongoing or repeated.
B. When discussing ways to die, Peter wants to know how John will die. Jesus put him on focus in . The abundant Christian life is not focused on what you and I believe others should be doing, but rather living it ourselves.
John 21:21–25 AV 1873
21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? 22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me. 23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? 24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. 25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
John 21:21-
John 21:2
John 21:21–24 AV 1873
21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? 22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me. 23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? 24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
John 10:10 AV 1873
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
C. Purposed life is in the Great Commission:
Luke 24:46–48 AV 1873
46 and said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And ye are witnesses of these things.
Matthew 28:19–20 AV 1873
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
John 21:24–25 AV 1873
24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. 25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
John 21:24-25
There is so much to the Christian life, are you living it! Are you living it focused and on purpose. There is a mission and we need to be living it.
