Called By God

Called by God

Called by God

Following after Jonah
Matthew 10:16 ESV
16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
Matthew 10 "Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves."
* God sends us out!!!
Isaiah 6:8 ESV
8 And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”
* So often God calls us to service, or work.
Why is that? Reveals who we belong to, brings glory to his name
James 2:26 ESV
26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.
What happens when we don't get the assignment we like? If we keep reading , we see that after Isaiah says Here I am! Send me. In vs. 9 God tells him "Go, and say to this people: "'Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive."
Preach to a group of people who will never believe!
Paul and the other disciples are called to proclaim the Gospel to those who will refuse and even kill them because of it

Jonah Called to Preach Repentance

Jonah 1:1–3 ESV
1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.
Why Nineveh?
The History of Nineveh
started by Nimrod, a descendant of Japheth, who was a son of Noah * Father of the Assyrian empire
Where the prophet Isaiah did his work
destruction is foretold in Nahum (which comes after Jonah)
prosperous capital of then Assyrian empire (much like Rome in Italy)
Assyrian nation constantly were at war with the Jews
- Nineveh was a very wealthy, prosperous city. Started by a God fearing man but in the end becomes like the church in Laodicea, Jonah hated them for the war they brought
Revelation 3:17 ESV
17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
-
God still called him to preach repentance
Jonah didn’t like the calling so he tried to run away from God

God Has Called You

Matthew 10:16 ESV

Hebrews 12:1–2 ESV
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Cling to Christ!
