22 “The Lord spoke these commands in a loud voice to your entire assembly from the fire, cloud, and total darkness on the mountain; he added nothing more. He wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.
23 All of you approached me with your tribal leaders and elders when you heard the voice from the darkness and while the mountain was blazing with fire.
24 You said, ‘Look, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that God speaks with a person, yet he still lives.
25 But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us and we will die if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer.
26 For who out of all mankind has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the fire, as we have, and lived?
27 Go near and listen to everything the Lord our God says. Then you can tell us everything the Lord our God tells you; we will listen and obey.’
28 “The Lord heard your words when you spoke to me. He said to me, ‘I have heard the words that these people have spoken to you. Everything they have said is right.
29 If only they had such a heart to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that they and their children would prosper forever.
30 Go and tell them: Return to your tents.
31 But you stand here with me, and I will tell you every command—the statutes and ordinances—you are to teach them, so that they may follow them in the land I am giving them to possess.’
32 “Be careful to do as the Lord your God has commanded you; you are not to turn aside to the right or the left.
33 Follow the whole instruction the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live, prosper, and have a long life in the land you will possess.
I. We need a new heart.
I. We need a new heart.
28 “The Lord heard your words when you spoke to me. He said to me, ‘I have heard the words that these people have spoken to you. Everything they have said is right.
29 If only they had such a heart to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that they and their children would prosper forever.
A. Our inability to follow God and obey him starts in the heart.
A. Our inability to follow God and obey him starts in the heart.
28 “The Lord heard your words when you spoke to me. He said to me, ‘I have heard the words that these people have spoken to you. Everything they have said is right.
29 If only they had such a heart to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that they and their children would prosper forever.
Illus: We are born into this world broken.
Not only are our hearts broken, but our mind and will is broken too.
That is why we feel the desires to wickedness, selfishness and sin.
I love the way paul explains it in the bible… I know the right thing to do, but fail to do it. I know the wrong things, yet end up doing those.
God gave us his word so that we would understand his standard, he sent Jesus to die for our forgiveness, AND then when we trust Christ, He places his spirit in us to transform our hearts.
Inside everyone of us is a heart that is at war with God. Inside everyone of us is a heart that is selfish at its core.
14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold as a slave to sin.
15 For I do not understand what I am doing, because I do not practice what I want to do, but I do what I hate.
16 Now if I do what I do not want to do, I agree with the law that it is good.
17 So now I am no longer the one doing it, but it is sin living in me.
18 For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do what is good is with me, but there is no ability to do it.
B. We need hearts which desire obedience.
B. We need hearts which desire obedience.
28 “The Lord heard your words when you spoke to me. He said to me, ‘I have heard the words that these people have spoken to you. Everything they have said is right.
29 If only they had such a heart to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that they and their children would prosper forever.
Illus: You know the old saying two wrongs don’t make a right?
The bible clearly teaches that we are broken from birth.
When we say, I need to try harder, or be better we double down on a life that relies on a broken heart, mind, and will.
Working harder from a broken heart mind and will produce broken actions.
Two wrongs don’t make a right, not do 200 wrongs make a right.
We need change in our lives.
We need life change. We need a new heart. We need a new mind and will.
That is what God did. When you trust Christ by faith, HE changes your heart. He takes your broken heart and transforms it to one which is like his.
More than that, God takes up residence in your life to transform you to be more like Him.
When you trust Christ, you are forgiven, changed, and empowered to love and follow God.
25 I will also sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols.
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
27 I will place my Spirit within you and cause you to follow my statutes and carefully observe my ordinances.
II. We need a mediator.
II. We need a mediator.
30 Go and tell them: Return to your tents.
31 But you stand here with me, and I will tell you every command—the statutes and ordinances—you are to teach them, so that they may follow them in the land I am giving them to possess.’
A. We need a righteous mediator who will stand in our place before God.
A. We need a righteous mediator who will stand in our place before God.
30 Go and tell them: Return to your tents.
31 But you stand here with me, and I will tell you every command—the statutes and ordinances—you are to teach them, so that they may follow them in the land I am giving them to possess.’
Illus: God desires to speak with men directly. That said, if we were to approach God in our sin, and brokeness God would pore out his wrath on us.
The one true and holy God would smite us if we came before Him in our sin.
That said, God built a way for us to approach him. First it was speaking with moses face to face for the people.
Then it was speaking to a cleansed high priest through the rituals of a sacrificial system.
God was building the understanding and need for a mediator.
We need someone to stand between us and God, removing our sin, and making us righteous.
That person is Christ. We approach God without fear when we stand by faith in Jesus Christ.
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to our confession.
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin.
16 Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.
B. We need a helper to guide us and empower us to follow.
B. We need a helper to guide us and empower us to follow.
30 Go and tell them: Return to your tents.
31 But you stand here with me, and I will tell you every command—the statutes and ordinances—you are to teach them, so that they may follow them in the land I am giving them to possess.’
Illus: God has done more than give us a mediator, he has also taken up residence in us through the Holy Spirit.
What that means is that God has placed His Holy Spirit in us to guide us just like Moses was called to guide the people into obedience.
Do not miss the direct connection of God’s forgiveness and our obedience.
Jesus died on the cross to forgive you, AND placed his Spirit in you to lead you to obedience.
The big question that must be asked is whether you listen to God’s Helper as he guides you to righteousness.
Is your life ruled and lived for yourself, or do you submit to the leading of God’s Spirit?
8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him.
10 Now if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.
11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then he who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through his Spirit who lives in you.
III. We need Jesus Christ.
III. We need Jesus Christ.
32 “Be careful to do as the Lord your God has commanded you; you are not to turn aside to the right or the left.

A. Jesus stands in our place.
A. Jesus stands in our place.
Illus: We are a Jesus people.
The people of Israel follow Joshua into the promise land… Then the wheels fall off the buss.
We know that we are not good enough to approach God, and that we have hearts which do not love God or want to serve Him.
Kings and priests fail to fulfill their calling in leadership leaving you thin
Jesus has made a way for us to be made right with God, change our hearts to love him, AND placed His Spirit in us lead us.
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you.
19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live too.
20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father, you are in me, and I am in you.
21 The one who has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father. I also will love him and will reveal myself to him.”
