Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach was born as the youngest of 8 children. He had 5 brothers, Johann, Johann, Johann, Johann, and Johann; and 2 sisters - Johanna and you guessed it… Maria. 3 of his siblings died as well as both of his parents before he was 10 years old. But despite the struggles he found a love and talent for music. Bach is one of very few people who have ever lived that most people know his name. What most people dont know is that he was one of those crazy Christians
After a tough start in music because people didn’t understand his style (young whipper snappers) he understood that to do anything, he needed God’s help.
The letters that Bach wrote at the beginning and end of all his music his music compositions are prayers. JJ is an abbreviation for “Jesu Juva,” which translated into English means, “Jesus, help me.” At the beginning of every work, Bach beseeches the Lord to guide him. The SDG at the end of his music stands for “Soli Deo Gloria.” Here Bach prays that each piece of music will humbly proclaim “To God Alone [be] the Glory.

EXP

Today I want to talk to you about the Glory of God

In context

Romans divided into 2 main parts
ch 1-3: desperate need of salvation
ch 4-6 talks about being right with God
ch 7-8 talks about how to live it out
ch 9-11 talks about various theological questions
Then right at the end of 11 he breaks into a song and describes how glorious God is.

The Doxology

Romans 11:33–36 ESV
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
Attributes ascribed to God in these 3 little verses
depth of riches
Psalm 50:10 ESV
For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.
Matthew 6:26–27 ESV
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?
depth of wisdom
James 1:5 ESV
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
depth of wisdom
Ephesians 1:16–17 ESV
I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him,
Why do we ask HIm? He’s the one who has it.
depth of knowledge
Psalm 119:66 ESV
Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments.
Again, Why do we ask?… He is the source.
“Details” by Sarah Reeves
Just like you paint the fiery skies You chose the color of my eyes From the start until the end of time You're in the details, you're in the details
Jeremiah 1:8 ESV
Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord.”
depth of knowledge
Jeremiah 1:5 ESV
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
God has an intimate knowledge that goes way beyond anything we can comprehend.
Young people finding themselves… most annoying thing ever heard… your right there. But I get it. You want to find our and explore what REALLY makes you tick. Let me tell you this.. That answer cannot be found out. When your a baby it’s all about feed me, burp me, keep me clean, keep me dry, let me feel safe, and let me feel love. And when your an adult it’s feed me, burp me, … wait maybe the answer can be found. But seriously, what makes you tick when your 7 isnt the same thing when your 47… your too complex… You know who knows? My King.
unsearchable judgements
unsearchable judgements
the greek here doesn’t imply just accepting it as face value. In fact, concerning the truths of the Lord, we are supposed to search them out knowing that we will never get to the bottom of it.
Psalm 16:6 ESV
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
ps 16:6
Inscrutable his ways
Inscrutable his ways
again the greek is similar keep looking keep following but know that His ways are so great that they will blow your mind
The take away.. sometimes we will simply not understand why God is doing the things that He is doing. It simply wont make any sense to us. But whatever it is, we can trust that the plan is a good one.
For who has know the mind of the Lord
For who has know the mind of the Lord
Isaiah 40:13 ESV

phil 4:19-20
Luke 2:14 ESV
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

Why do we glorify God?

If God has all the glory, why do we need to glorify Him? Well because He is great, and greatly to be praised.
The previous chapters in Romans talk about the desperate need of a mankind to be saved and he carefully unfolds God’s plan to rescue everyone.
The plan is so intricate that it takes 11 chapters and that’s only to describe it just a little bit. It’s incredible and continues today. It’s to deep.
Another word for glorify hear would be to magnify… there are 2 ways to magnify things.
If things are small, we need a magnifying glass or a microscope to see them better. Did you know that we cant get small enough?
If things are large but a long way off, we might need a telescope to bring it into visibility.
Here’s why we glorify the Lord?
There are big things we don’t know about because they are too far off to see. We magnify Him so we can see.
There are details that we need to see.
Glorifying God is necessary to see his Glory, His magnificence

Conclusion
