Intro

[SLIDE] ESV 4 And the men of David said to him, "Here is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.' " Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul's robe. 5 And afterward David's heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul's robe. 6 He said to his men, "The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord's anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord's anointed."

We tend to respond "shut up I'm busy" because we are more worried about the appearnce than the substance

what may appear on the surface to be a leading from the Lord may just as well be a temptation from Satan (de Jong 1978:178)

It's not the big decisions (usually) ... its the small ones

The simplistic idea that we "have God in our pocket" and know exactly how he relates to some particular situation. We should guard against similar sorts of speculative tendencies in our own living and focus more attention on obeying the clear commands of God

1st rule of life and leadership

Very few set out each morning saying "Today I'm going to be a terrible person

[SLIDE] NLT reminds us that "the Lord our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions."[1]

Kingship

Titanic wasn’t sunk by one big Gash…it was six narrow gashes below the waterline

One invested with ultimate authority and power over his subjects.[2]

Kingship was a manmade office that God allowed, but they had authority because God allowed it.

He understood Authority came from God

Saul is encamped with 3,000 men...he's in the middle of the camp

His men again say look here’s our chance!!

Why this matters

SAul’s Selection

[SLIDE] NLT 9 "No!" David said. "Don't kill him. For who can remain innocent after attacking the Lord's anointed one? 10 Surely the Lord will strike Saul down someday, or he will die of old age or in battle. 11 The Lord forbid that I should kill the one he has anointed! But take his spear and that jug of water beside his head, and then let's get out of here!"

Saul was selected because he looked like the best man for the job

He always refers to Saul with respect - "my lord, the king"

David didn't elect Saul as King, God Did!

ESV2 And he had a son whose name was Saul, a handsome young man. There was not a man among the people of Israel more handsome than he. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.

Saul’s Iceberg Moment

The second part of authority is understanding covenant

Meanwhile, Saul stayed at Gilgal, and his men were trembling with fear. 8 Saul waited there seven days for Samuel, as Samuel had instructed him earlier, but Samuel still didn’t come. Saul realized that his troops were rapidly slipping away. 9 So he demanded, “Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings!” And Saul sacrificed the burnt offering himself.

Covenant

10 Just as Saul was finishing with the burnt offering, Samuel arrived. Saul went out to meet and welcome him, 11 but Samuel said, “What is this you have done?”

Saul replied, “I saw my men scattering from me, and you didn’t arrive when you said you would, and the Philistines are at Micmash ready for battle. 12 So I said, ‘The Philistines are ready to march against us at Gilgal, and I haven’t even asked for the Lord’s help!’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering myself before you came.”

Defined

13 “How foolish!” Samuel exclaimed. “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you. Had you kept it, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom must end, for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart. The Lord has already appointed him to be the leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.” [2]

[SLIDE] A sacred kinship (relationship) bond between two parties, ratified by swearing an oath.[3]

His lack of character cost him his kingdom – it was his inward character and motives

WHy did God treat DAVID’S AND Saul’s sins differently?

Values and Ethics

I have set of principles I'm willing to live by and die for if need be .

The answer lies in the general pattern of covenant consistency or inconsistency reflected in their lives, as well as in the character of their attitudes after they had sinned.

When Saul sinned he made excuses and tried to justify his actions (; , , ).

When David sinned he confessed the error of his ways and repented ("I have sinned against the Lord," ; cf. , ). It is for this reason that David is termed a "man after [God's] own heart" (; ). It was David's desire to serve the Lord faithfully, even though his obedience was far from perfect.[5]

I must lead myself first.

[SLIDE] Then all the tribes of Israel went to David at Hebron and told him, "We are your own flesh and blood. 2 In the past, when Saul was our king, you were the one who really led the forces of Israel. And the Lord told you, ‘You will be the shepherd of my people Israel. You will be Israel's leader.' " 3 So there at Hebron, King David made a covenant before the Lord with all the elders of Israel. And they anointed him king of Israel.

He had all the power, all the influence...he could have just taken the crown

Instead he stops and "Before the Lord" makes a covenant with the people he's leading

[SLIDE] 3 Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. 4 So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him. [6]

16 I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message.

Things to do if in a season of preparation[7]

Check your motives

Get out of your comfort zone

Learn to Understand Authority (kingship & covenant)

Be faithful and bloom wherever God has planted you

Don’t usurp the authority that has been placed over you

Realize you are a son/daughter of the King but not the King

God’s covenant with us is based on giving of his son’s life for relationship with you

Understand how to lead/serve

When you’re the most powerful person in the room: Mom. dad. captain. manager. owner, leverage your power for the benefit of the other people in the room.

45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” [8]
