LAST WEEK

Jaime gave a powerful word on the Faith that comes through your experience in the Storm.
It is on Youtube, and our iTunes podcast.
I highly suggest you check it out.

THIS WEEK

We are going to continue to grow through the Letter to the Romans.
Two weeks ago we began
The question that Paul was posing was this:
If where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more, then do we need to stop sinning?
“Shall we continue to sin that grace may abound?”
Paul went on to speak against this thought by reminding the Christian of what it means to be a Christian.
If we are going to call ourselves Christian
Be thankful for Jesus’ Death and Resurrection
What does this translate to in real time?
What does this mean for our daily struggles?
WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE IN REAL TIME?
LET’S GET INTO THE TEXT
LET’S GET INTO THE TEXT
Romans 6:7-
Romans 6:5–23 NKJV
5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. 15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. 20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:7–23 NKJV
PRAY
THAT WE WOULD UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A JESUS FOLLOWER.
THAT WE WOULD UNDERSTAND OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH SIN, NOW THAT WE ARE SAVED.
Romans 6:7
Romans 6:5–7 NKJV
5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.
If our sins have truly been nailed to the cross
We have been united with Christ in the likeness of His death,
Consequently, we will also be united with Christ in the Likeness of His Resurrection
Our Old Self was crucified with Christ
Our Old Ways
Our Old endencies
Our Whole Sin
That the body of sin might be done away with
That this instrument of sin might be rendered powerless
That the goal would be realized
What Goal?
That we should no longer be slaves of sin
For he who has died with Christ, Crucified with Him, Buried in His likeness . . .
HAS BEEN FREED FROM SIN
Very interesting language here.
That word “Freed” yields an interesting definition
It means to be Justified & Declared Righteous
For those of us who have been saved by the blood of Jesus
We have been justified and declared righteous from what Sin declared over us
We have been set free from the Mastership of Sin
Purchased by a Saving, Redeeming, and Loving God
A God who welcomes us into his family
If this has happened to us,
If we have indeed rendered our old self dead to sin, then something else will begin to happen
Romans 6:8–11 NKJV
8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:8
Paul goes on to say:
If we have died with Christ
We believe that we shall also live with Him
Because Jesus was raised from the dead, there is no second death for Him, or for those who believe in Him
Revelation 20:6 NKJV
6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.
We must understand that the death that Jesus died, He died once and for all
On the cross He said “It is Finished”
There is no other work that needs to be done
The only work to participate in, is the work of belief
Since He has died, Once and For All, the life that He now lives, He lives unto the Lord.
This is the best example for us to live into
Paul even says it:
Likewise, you also
Reckon yourselves to be dead to Sin, but not only that
Reckon yourself also as alive in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Death has nothing on us
Sin has nothing on us
Temptation isn’t that powerful when you are living into all that Christ has for you.
We can agree with the Paul, when he said to the Galatians
“I have been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I, but Christ who lives in me”
Galatians 2:20 NKJV
20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Romans 6:12–14 NKJV
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Many of us call ourselves Christians, but not many of us are living into the reality of .
HOW DOES THIS FLESH OUT PRACTICALLY?
Romans 6:12–14 NKJV
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Romans 6:
As Christians, we cannot let sin reign in us
We cannot let sin have dominion in our bodies
It is no longer our master
It is no longer the loudest voice
Therefore, stop obeying Sin’s commands, nor the lusts it whispers into your little heart.
Stop presenting your temple as a co-op space for both Sin and Rightouesness
Our Temples are not shared workspaces for both Good & Evil
We are not vessels of wrath and grace
We are not instruments of righteousness and unrighteousness
We are not channels of life and death
We are either or
Paul is giving us very valuable encouragement here
Encouragement to help us deal with our sinfulness like Jesus dealt with it, once and for all.
He says:
SIN SHALL NOT HAVE DOMINION OVER YOU
YOU ARE NO LONGER UNDER THE LAW
YOU ARE UNDER GRACE
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US TODAY?
WHEN WE WERE UNDER THE LAW, SIN HAD DOMINION OVER US
There was nothing we could do to appease our guilt
Nothing to set us free
Nothing to plead our case
WHILE WE WERE AT WAR WITH GOD, CONDEMNED BY HIS LAW
God sent His Son to die for us
To die on the Cross
To give us Eternal Life
This is Grace
This is God’s unmerited favor upon sinful man
For those of us who have been saved by this act, we are no longer under the condemnation of the law, but under the beauty of God’s grace
We no longer have to answer to the accusations of the law
We get to experience the freedom in repentance
We get to embrace the freedom in forgiveness
We get to enjoy the redeeming qualities of a God who saves.
SO WHAT SHALL WE DO
AS THE MOST LOVED
AS THE MOST FORGIVEN
AS THE MOST REDEEMED PEOPLE ON THE PLANET?
SHOULD WE ABUSE THIS GIFT?
SHOULD WE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF GOD’S GOODNESS?
Romans 6:15–16 NKJV
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?
Romans 6:15–19 NKJV
CHURCH, PAUL IS GIVING US GOLD HERE
HE IS FREEING US FROM THE THOUGHTS THAT SOMETIMES CRIPPLE US
HE IS FREEING US FROM THE “HAVE TO” OF SIN
HE IS BRINGING INTO REALITY THE TRUTHS OF OUR STANDING IN CHRIST.
IF CHRIST HAS FREED US FROM THE MASTERSHIP OF SIN
PURCHASED US FOR HIS PURPOSE
SIN IS NO LONGER OUR MASTER
WE DON’T HAVE TO ANSWER TO SIN’S COMMANDS
AS SIN CALLS OUT ORDERS FOR US TO FOLLOW, THE GOSPEL CALLS OUT LOUDER
AS DEEP CRIES OUT TO DEEP
SO THE GOSPEL PIERCES THROUGH BONE AND MARROW, SOUL AND SPIRIT
DON’T YOU KNOW THAT TO WHOM YOU PRESENT YOURSELF A SLAVE TO, YOU SHALL OBEY THAT MASTER
YOU ARE THAT “THINGS” SLAVE WHOM YOU OBEY
EITHER OF SIN LEADING TO DEATH, OR OF OBEDIENCE LEADING TO RIGHTEUOSNESS
WE PICK CHURCH.
JUST BECAUSE GOD ALLOWS IT, DOES NOT MEAN HE APPROVES OF IT.
JUST BECAUSE HE ALLOWS YOU TO SIN, DOES NOT MEAN HE IS GRANTING YOU PERMISSION.
WHAT WE PRACTICE, SHOWS US WHAT WE BELIEVE . . .
IF WE SIN, AND HAVE NO REMORSE, WE ARE IN A DANGEROUS PLACE
IF WE SIN, AND IMMEDIATELY FEEL GUILT AND THE NEED TO REPENT, THATS A GOOD START
WHEN WE REPENT, TURN FROM OUR SIN, AND STRIVE TO PREVENT THAT PARTICULAR SIN FROM OVERCOMING US AGAIN . . . THIS IS WHERE WE SHOULD LIVE
Romans 6:17–19 NKJV
17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.
CHURCH, WE MUST REMEMBER
WE WERE ONCE SLAVES TO SIN
Romans 6:
WE WERE UNDER SIN’S MASTERSHIP
BUT NOW . . . .
HAVING BEEN SET FREE FROM SIN
RELEASED FROM THAT MASTER
WE ARE NOW SLAVES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
IT WAS EASY TO OBEY THE ORDERS AND COMMANDS OF SIN
IT WAS PLEASUREFUL
IT BROUGHT INSTANT SATISFACTION
BUT NOW THAT YOU HAVE BEEN SET FREE FROM THAT MASTER
TRANSFER THAT ENERGY INTO DOING WHAT IS RIGHT
USE THAT ENERGY TO FIGHT AGAINST TEMPTATION AND CULTIVATE A HOLY SPIRITUAL CULTURE WITHIN
Romans 6:20-
USE THAT ENERGY TO BRING FORTH LIFE!
CHECK OUT WHAT PAUL SAYS:
Romans 6:20–23 NKJV
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
PRIOR TO CHRIST, YOU BORE FRUIT UNTO DEATH
IN FACT, THE BIBLE SAYS THAT OUR SINFUL PASSIONS BRING FORTH FRUIT UNTO DEATH
WE WERE SO INTO THAT
EXCITED TO SIN
PLANNING TO SIN
SCHEEMING TO SIN
BUT NOW . . .
HAVING BEEN SET FREE FROM THOSE PASSIONS, AND THOSE SINS
HAVING BECOME BONDSERVANTS OF CHRIST
YOU WILL BEGIN TO BEAR FRUIT UNTO HOLINESS
FRUIT WHOSE END RESULT IS HOLINESS AND EVERLASTING LIFE.
BEFORE YOU REAPED TO THE WHIRLWIND
YOU SOWED AND REAPED UNTO DEATH
AND IF YOU WOULD HAVE BREATHED YOUR LAST, LIFE WOULD HAVE RENDERED YOU A PAYCHECK THAT LEAD TO DEATH
FOR THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH
BUT NOW . . .
NOW THAT YOU HAVE CONFESSED THE NAME OF JESUS
NOW THAT YOU HAVE PLACED YOUR FAITH IN HIS NAME
NOW THAT YOU HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT
NOW THAT YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT DESTINY
CHANGE IS INEVITABLE.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
