35 While Jesus was teaching in the temple, he asked, “How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the son of David?
36 David himself says by the Holy Spirit: The Lord declared to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.’
37 David himself calls him ‘Lord’; how then can he be his son?” And the large crowd was listening to him with delight.

38 He also said in his teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes and who want greetings in the marketplaces,
39 the best seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets.
40 They devour widows’ houses and say long prayers just for show. These will receive harsher judgment.”
41 Sitting across from the temple treasury, he watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums.

Illus: The simple understanding of this passage is Jesus using a royal psalm to help us understand who He is.
Often when Jesus quotes the Old Testament, His intent is that the hearer would connect His words to the greater context that He is referencing.
So Jesus is not just using word play to say that David’s Lord is saying to Him… but specifically pointing us to psalm 110 so that he can define what the “son of david” is to be.
The Son of David is a direct prophecy to a greater ruler than David that both preceded and succeeded beyond David.
It was that a ruler greater than David would come from David, but that he would be a different kind of ruler.
1 This is the declaration of the Lord to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.”
2 The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion. Rule over your surrounding enemies.
3 Your people will volunteer on your day of battle. In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn, the dew of your youth belongs to you.
4 The Lord has sworn an oath and will not take it back: “You are a priest forever according to the pattern of Melchizedek.”
B. How did Jesus put his enemies under his feet.

Illus: The reason David was used as the prophecy, and not say Joshua was the type that david was.
God desired to communicate his eternal reign as a shepherd over the world.
How might the great shepherd put his enemies under his feet? He does it through gathering the sheep of all the nations, and then ridding the flocks of false shepherds.
You cannot read this text out of it’s greater context. Jesus is being peppered with questions from the Pharisees, Sadducee, Herodians, and Scribes.
In making a claim to being the Son of David, he his establishing his messiahship, as well as putting his foot down on the fake leaders of the day.
Jesus is our shepherd king today. He calls us to gather the scattered flock, and stand against fake shepherd.
23 I will establish over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will shepherd them. He will tend them himself and will be their shepherd.
24 I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David will be a prince among them. I, the Lord, have spoken.
II. The scribes were counterfeits.

38 He also said in his teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes and who want greetings in the marketplaces,
39 the best seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets.

A. The scribes sought honor not service.

Illus: Whenever you come to church, what do you come for?
Do you come to be seen? Do you come to be respected? Do you come to be recognized? Do you come to be served?
I believe the greatest need of our church is the need for servants. We have many people who come for the show. We have many people who come to learn and grow in scripture. We have many people come because this is where you are supossed to be.
A mark that you are being transformed by christ is that you take on a servants heart.
Your desire to be recognized diminishes, and your desire to do the work no one else wants… and frankly that is difficult grows because Jesus changes you.
8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ because you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers and sisters.
9 Do not call anyone on earth your father, because you have one Father, who is in heaven.
10 You are not to be called instructors either, because you have one Instructor, the Messiah.
11 The greatest among you will be your servant.
12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
13 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you don’t go in, and you don’t allow those entering to go in.
B. The scribes sought what they could get, not what they could give.
B. The scribes sought what they could get, not what they could give.
Illus: Think about the way we measure success as a church. As our church runs about 400 people a week we think, WOW we are successful because we have two services and have a lot of people come to church.
As a church wich has 400 people come every week, what do we acomplish with all those God has placed in our body?
Frankly, we should not struggle to find deacons.
We should not struggle to find nursery workers.
We should not struggle to send people overseas.
We should not struggle to find people willing to invest in the lives of our celebrate recovery ministries. Even more so we should not struggle to find people to support and relieve those who serve in the ministry faithfully.
The great majority of our church comes for the benefits, but we struggle as a body to find servants?
It is easy to look at say, why don’t they serve, but where do you serve?
1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples:
2 “The scribes and the Pharisees are seated in the chair of Moses.
3 Therefore do whatever they tell you, and observe it. But don’t do what they do, because they don’t practice what they teach.
4 They tie up heavy loads that are hard to carry and put them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves aren’t willing to lift a finger to move them.
5 They do everything to be seen by others: They enlarge their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.
6 They love the place of honor at banquets, the front seats in the synagogues,
7 greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by people.
III. Do you following the suffering servant, or the self important scribes?

A. What does following Jesus really look like: service.
A. What does following Jesus really look like: service.
Illus: My heart for every person at our church is that we raise up a church of servants. That every one of us would willingly volunteer for the hard jobs because that is what Jesus would do.
where are you serving? Would you be willing to plug into a ministry?
Are you willing to embrace the identity of our servant king, or do you desire the identity of the scribe?
11 The greatest among you will be your servant.
12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
