Hebrews 5:11 ESV
11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
More to say about what?
He wants to go deeper in the study of something...
The context would tell us that the author has the Jesus Melchizedek typology in mind.
How is Jesus the true priest/king in the same way Melchizedek was?
If Melchizedek is a type of Christ in the OT, what else might have the author of hebrews liked to have taught them regarding typology in the OT.
Maybe he would have liked to talk about how
Jonah
Samson
Jacob
Adam
Tabernacle
Creation
David
Daniel
Joseph
Moses
Jehu
Elijah
However, this deeper understanding of the bible would be lost on these Christians.
And why would it be lost? because they are dull of hearing
dull (gk. νωθρός) = lazy or a sluggard in their understanding.
Studying the bible takes work, its hard work.
one of the great threats against the church today is to get rid of the bible because its too hard to understand.
Unhitch from the OT because its too weird, not relevant etc.
We should be hearing from God outside the bible etc.
Those who are νωθρός toward the bible are those who fail to be formed by the bible.
many pastors struggle with being νωθρός because they stoop learning. Sermons are pulled from the cup of their theological understanding from their days in seminary.
Hebrews 5:12 ESV
12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,
By this time you ought to be teachers.
If these people were not lazy and sluggish in their understanding of God’s word, they would by this time be teachers in the church.
to be a teacher is more than someone who has a lot of knowledge, but it is someone who is mature, someone who has grown up in the faith, they are no longer children in the faith, but grown mature adults in the faith.
However, these people have not grown up, because of their lazy and sluggish minds they are in NEED of someone to teach them again the basic principles of the oracles of God.
What are the basic principles?
Hebrews 6:1–2 ESV
1 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
You NEED milk not meat.
He is calling them children in the faith that are unable to eat the meat of the word, but instead must need the milk
Milk = repentance from dead works, faith toward God, instructions about baptism, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgement.
Meat = Melchizedek typology. Typology is the meat of the word.
typology is how we understand how the bible works
typology is the path toward maturity in the bible and in life.
Hebrews 5:13 ESV
13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.
to be unskilled literally means to not have experiences, or to not be tested. This is experiential skill.
If you have not learned to read or study the bible, than you are unskilled, untested, in need of milk, a child.
(he is not talking to children right here, he is talking to those who should be teachers)
Hebrews 5:14 ESV
14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
Heb
So milk is for those who are children in the faith, and meat is for those who are mature.
What does it look like to be mature?
those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
Trained by constant practice
trained γυμνάζω = english word gymnasium
constant practice (hexis) = maturity; mature state of mind
Now there are three three groups of people in the passage
Hebrews 5:11–14 ESV
11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
Maturity

Those who hear (dull of hearing)

Those who distinguish good from evil = king
Those who teach = prophet
