Session 1 - INTERCESSION VS PRAYER

Introduction

What is intercession?
The english word Intercede - is derived from a combination of 2 words
Inter - which means - ‘between’
Cedere - ‘go’
Hence to intercede simply means - “to go between”
In the Bible intercession refers to the act of interceding ie. prayer, petition, or making an ernest and humble request in favour of another.
1 Timothy 2:1–4 ESV
1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
: the act of interceding
1 Tim 2:

INTERCESSION VS PRAYER

In the passage there are 4 words that are used to identify types of prayer.
Prayer
In the passage
Supplication
Intercession
Thanksgiving

1. Prayer - gk “proseuche”

2: prayer, petition, or entreaty in favor of another
Uttering words / Speaking to God
This is a General Prayer which includes just having a conversation with God to praying for just about anything.

2. Supplication - gk “deesis”

Plead, Petition, Entreat / ask for something one is lacking or in need of.
It is to beg / beseech and basically indicates that the one who is asking is dependent and distraught.
While ‘proseuche’ is general prayer ‘deesis’ is Specific Prayer
Luke 5:12 ESV
While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”
Hebrews 5:7 ESV
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
heb 5

3. Intercession - gk “enteuxis”

To meet with or turn to someone in an effort to appeal for or against someone-else
The words primary meaning is of one who comes before the rulers court to speak not for himself but on behalf of another.
In Christ is the intercessor stands for the believer before the heavenly court.
Romans 8:34 ESV
Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
In He is the eternal high Priest who comes before God on behalf of the people.
Hebrews 7:24–25 ESV
but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
The prayer of intercession is a legal action, or position taken in prayer as you are approaching the courts of heaven.

THE COURTS OF HEAVEN

Revelation 12:10–11 ESV
And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.
Accuser - gk “kategoros” one who brings a case against another in the assembly, i.e. a complainant at law; (Public Prosecutor)
‘He was regarded by the Jews as the accuser of men before God, laying to their charge the violations of the law of which they were guilty, and demanding their punishment.’
He was regarded by the Jews as the accuser of men before God, laying to their charge the violations of the law of which they were guilty, and demanding their punishment.

Examples
jud
Zechariah 3:1–3 ESV
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?” Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments.
Jude 9–10 KJV 1900
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.
What is Jude saying - many times our battles must be won legally.
Let us fight wisely and legally even before we enter into a battle.
1 John 2:1 ESV
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
ESV
Advocate - gk “parakletos” one who pleads another’s cause in a court of justice; (Lawyer)
Advocate - gk “parakletos” one who pleads another’s cause in a court of justice; (Lawyer)
Revelation 19:11 ESV
Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war.
1 John 2:1 ESV
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
Revelation 19:10–11 ESV
Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war.
parakletos” one who brings a case against another in the assembly, i.e. a complainant at law; (Public Prosecutor)
one who pleads another’s cause, i.e. a complainant at law; (Public Prosecutor)
in a court of justice; (Public Prosecutor)
How does the enemy get his legal rights - Thru sin
The bible says no sin goes unpunished hence sin attacks punishment / course
Generation Sin Curses -
Exodus 34:5–7 ESV
The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
Exodus 34:6–7 ESV
The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
Personal Sin Curses -
Isaiah 59:2 ESV
but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
SIn vs Iniquity
David’s sin - (a) Confrontation - () (b) Repentance - ()
2 Samuel 12:13–14 ESV
David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die. Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child who is born to you shall die.”
blaspheme - hb “naats” - to spurn or treat with contempt
Psalm 51:1–2 KJV 1900
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: According unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin.
SIN - to miss the mark (motive)
TRANSGRESSION - Act of rebellion (action) -not doing what is right
INIQUITY - guilt, blame, punishment (judgement)
The Judge - God -
To fully see this principle, lets look at .
John 16:8–11 ESV
And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
“And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righ- teousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.” ()
Jesus said when Holy Spirit would come, He would convict and convince us of sin, righteousness and judgment.
The ruler of this world is judged but we have to execute (appropriate) that judgement.
By the blood - It is what has atoned for our sins
By the Word - It is the law of God
By the Authority of Christ - Rebuking, Declaring/prophesying, binding and loosing etc.
Jesus overcome satan by the word, and rebuking him. He never needed the blood as He had no sin to atone for.
The prayer of intercession is where we go before the throne of God to make a case for the release of someone from judgement, that they may receive redemption, salvation, provision, healing, blessing etc.
This doesn’t only relate to individual but to family, community, church, and nation.
Though prayer an supplication may be personal and differs from intercession, the intercessor also uses these form of prayer in an effort to intervene on-behalf of another.

OTHER FORMS OF PRAYER ESSENTIAL TO THE INTERCESSOR

Contrition / Repentance -
This is an important tool of the intercessor
It is a powerful weapon against the enemy because it destroys his legal rights over an individual, church, community and nation.
It averts disaster, Judgement, and opens door for blessings, prosperity and peace.
Sometime we are in warfare and sense we are getting no where (experiencing a block) check if there is something we need to repent for.
This repentance is not necessarily personal as the sin may not be ours, but we are impacted by it by association (group we are apart of) - even the more why we should not be unequally yoked.
This repentance can be either:
Personal - David ()
Corporate - Moses (Deu 9:18–20), Hezekiah ()
Family - Job ()
Deuteronomy 9:18–20 ESV
Then I lay prostrate before the Lord as before, forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all the sin that you had committed, in doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord to provoke him to anger. For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure that the Lord bore against you, so that he was ready to destroy you. But the Lord listened to me that time also. And the Lord was so angry with Aaron that he was ready to destroy him. And I prayed for Aaron also at the same time.
2 Chronicles 30:18–20 ESV
For a majority of the people, many of them from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet they ate the Passover otherwise than as prescribed. For Hezekiah had prayed for them, saying, “May the good Lord pardon everyone who sets his heart to seek God, the Lord, the God of his fathers, even though not according to the sanctuary’s rules of cleanness.” And the Lord heard Hezekiah and healed the people.
James 5:14–15 ESV
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
Family - Job (
Job 1:5 ESV
And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.

Praying in the Spirit
This is another essencial tool in the intercessor arsonal.
The bible tells in ( that the Spirit knows the mind of God, and He knows the heart of man hence He is able to pray for our needs according to the will of God.
Paul says in () “we know not how to pray but .....” There are times that we need to pray in the Spirit because we do not know the details behind the scene.
eg. iniquity or some legal rights against an individual; a petition that is being made for a particular judgement of which the iniquity is generations deep and was done in secret. In such cases the Holy Spirit knows the issue, what is required and prays accordingly. Sometime the Holy Spirit will provide revelation about the issue.
Personal Illustration - Dog in my grand mothers back yard
Praying in the Spirit can include
Praying in an Unknown Tongue - (, ) - “He speaks to God…he utters mysteries in the spirit”
Praying with Unusual Sounds (groaning) - () eg. “Growl”
Praying in Revelation (allowing the Spirit guide) - ()
At times while praying in the Spirit you can be transported in the spirit or have a vision of what or where you are praying about. eg. (1) Person chained by Baphomet. (2) Demond in house june road.
NB: Note - Praying by information as well as inspiration.
Recap What we have learned

Session 2 - ROLES OF THE INTERCESSOR

Who is an intercessor?
The Intercessor is one who Prays On-Behalf of Another
The Nation, Community, Church, Family, Unbelievers.
But The prayer of intercession is a legal action, or position taken in prayer.
But do you know that the intercessor also prays un-behalf of God

Personal Example - National Repentance
Ezekiel 22:30–31 ESV
And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none. Therefore I have poured out my indignation upon them. I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath. I have returned their way upon their heads, declares the Lord God.”
Eg Jonah - Nineveh - God forgave the wicked city, why?

Exodus 34:6–7 ESV
The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”

Who is an intercessor?

Who is an intercessor?
ex 34:6-7
As intercessors - we approach God with the knowledge that He rather forgive than to Judge, this is why repentance is important for the intercessor.

3 ROLES OF THE INTERCESSOR

The Intercessor as Friend
The Intercessor as Watchman
The Intercessor as Gatekeeper

INTERCESSOR AS FRIEND

There are several different types of Prayer:

Genesis 3:8–10 ESV
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
The passage communicates that God would come down in the garden and reason with Adam.
“Come let us reason together...”
Personal Experience - My be time prayer “would you listen to me”
God created us (in our image and likeness) not as slaves, but to be friends. - (, )
James 2:23 ESV
and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God.
John 15:15 ESV
No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
Friends must have a relationship - and it requires regular conversation for their friendship to grow and remain good friends. That is one reason why Prayer is so important because it is means by which we maintain our relationship with God.
You cannot be an effective intercessor without first having and maintaining an intimate relationship with God.
Ex. Abraham - - “shall i hide this thing from my servant..”
Relationship gives you Access to information (Knowing Gods business) - What did Jesus say “i call you friends because…”
Relationship gives you Audience - - “Come boldly...”
Relationship gives you Favour - (If you abide in me..)
Daniel 10:11–12 ESV
And he said to me, “O Daniel, man greatly loved, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright, for now I have been sent to you.” And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up trembling. Then he said to me, “Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words.
Ex. Moses - Another very prominent and powerful intercessor was Moses. This is a man who had a relationship with God that he was able to see the glory of God. Hear what God said about Him.
num
Numbers 12:6–8 ESV
And he said, “Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream. Not so with my servant Moses. He is faithful in all my house. With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, and not in riddles, and he beholds the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”
Personal Experience - 21 days of fasting - Jesus appear / Also gave revelation
If we are going to be effective intercessors we must have an intimate relationship with God. it is thru it we will have access to the voice of God, to know what to pray about, the heart of God to desire to pray about it, and the mind of God to know how to pray about it.

INTERCESSOR AS WATCHMAN

eph 6:18
Ephesians 6:18 KJV 1900
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
The passage does not only say we are to pray but it implores us to be watchful. Keep our physical and spiritual eyes open because there is an enemy out there that is seeking to discourage, defeat, and devour us and others.
1 Peter 5:8 ESV
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
1 Corinthians 2:11 ESV
For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
1 pet 5 8
The intercessors job is not only to intervene in an issue on-behalf of others but is also a preventative role. To stop things from happening.
Have you ever gotten a dream, a burden or a revelation about someone or something?
This is also referred to as Prophetic Intercession where the intercessor is given insight into things that are about to or are happening.
Just as the Biblical watchmen who, “From the walls of the cities they would watch for two things: messengers and enemies.
As watchmen we are often alerted by the Holy Spirit, before we ever have any concrete evidence . . . . . we recognize “wolves” sent to devour the flock.
It is our job to bring warnings to those in leadership as you sense and discern.
And to intercede to prevent or avert the danger.
3 Aspects of the Watchman:
Alertness
He is alert, observing, listening, waiting before God in order to hear or receive a word, a concern, a warning, a condition, a vision or a promise, and responding back to Him with prayerful petition
Isaiah 62:6–7 ESV
On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest, and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth.
The watchman is one who stays alert, day and night as the Holy Spirit will alert you to pray at various hours of the day and night.
God will give you dreams, visions, premonitions, and revelations about people, church, city and even the nation.
But you have to be trustworthy, and dependable. - you can’t go blabbering about the things God has told you. You can’t be proud about the revelations (Paul) either.
.
The watchman does not only seeks to avert danger but also acts to bring in the will of God.
Discernment
1 Kings 3:9 ESV
Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?”
1 king 9
The watchman has an acute spiritual sense to pick up things others don’t.
, sometimes with corresponding actions.
Therefore The watchman-intercessor prays back to God an inspiration regarding a human concern that comes from God's own heart.
We are often alerted by the Holy Spirit, before we ever have any concrete evidence . . . . . we recognize “wolves” sent to devour the flock.
We sense the temperature of the spiritual atmosphere.
But you have to be trustworthy, and dependable. - you can’t go blabbering about the things God has told you. You can’t be proud about the revelations (Paul) either.
And should respond to it .
God have to be able to depend on you to follow thru whether it is to pray, speak, prophesy or to advise.
Remember you are not the leader - it is not your responsibility to instruct but to inform. The leader of the church will decide the strategic action to take.
How to discern?
Hebrews 5:14 ESV
But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
Discernment comes with practice
Burden Bearing
Another aspect of the watchman intercessor is that of burden bearing. God gives his watchman the burden of another. Sometimes they will even feel in their body the pain, sorrow, grief, of another. Why? Because the Holy Spirit in the watchman is touched by our infirmities.
The watchman takes up the burden and prays until there is a break through.
You must remember that the devil and his evil ones are always working to destroy people.
He takes up the burden of another. He gets the word from the Lord and prays until there is a break through.
Another aspect of the watchman intercessor is that of burden bearing. The watchman prays much of the time in secret. Sometimes you will not even know who a watchman is; he could be your neighbor! The watchman takes up the burden of another. He gets the word from the lord and prays until there is a break through. You must remember that the devil and his evil ones are always working to destroy people. God gives his watchman the burden of another. Sometimes they will even feel in their body the pain, sorrow, grief, of another. Why? Because the Holy Spirit in the watchman is touched by our infirmities. Yes, God really does feel our pain!
You must remember that the devil and his evil ones are always working to destroy people.
Without prayer god will not act. Why? Because he has protocol, spiritual laws he abides by.
Without prayer god will not act. Why? Because he has protocol, spiritual laws he abides by. God does act sovereignty but you can be rest assured that an intercessor is praying about it somewhere.
God does act sovereignty in regards to His divine purpose or due to the cry of the innocent. but you can be rest assured that an intercessor is also praying about it somewhere.

INTERCESSOR AS GATEKEEPER

1 Chronicles 9:20–24 ESV
And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the chief officer over them in time past; the Lord was with him. Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah was gatekeeper at the entrance of the tent of meeting. All these, who were chosen as gatekeepers at the thresholds, were 212. They were enrolled by genealogies in their villages. David and Samuel the seer established them in their office of trust. So they and their sons were in charge of the gates of the house of the Lord, that is, the house of the tent, as guards. The gatekeepers were on the four sides, east, west, north, and south.
Gatekeeper - hb “shoer” - an attendant who guards a gate and entrance area, limiting access and making announcements. He also referred to as a Porter or doorkeeper who has a consecrated religious function in a temple, as a class of temple worker.
an attendant who guards a gate and entrance area, limiting access and making announcements
doorkeeper, i.e., an attendant who guards a gate and entrance area, limiting access, as a consecrated religious function in a temple, as a class of temple worker
How does this relates to the intercessor
The intercessor Guards and protects the church from the enemies attempts - and alerting leadership - That is why decrement is so important.
The intercessor also Preserves Holiness - ()
2 Chronicles 23:19 ESV
He stationed the gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the Lord so that no one should enter who was in any way unclean.
2 Chronicles 23:19 ESV
He stationed the gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the Lord so that no one should enter who was in any way unclean.
Alerts the King -
Discerning wolves in sheep clothing. an
2 Kings 7:11 ESV
Then the gatekeepers called out, and it was told within the king’s household.
The gatekeeper is an intimate intercessor.  While the watchman announces the prophetic word to the people, the gatekeeper discusses it with the King behind closed doors.

The intercessor also Preserves Holiness -
They where setup by God to protect and preserve holiness in the temple (house) of God.
The where the last line of defence from anything unclean.
It is said that Phinehas was the first gate keeper - protector of holiness ()
Psalm 106:28–31 ESV
Then they yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor, and ate sacrifices offered to the dead; they provoked the Lord to anger with their deeds, and a plague broke out among them. Then Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was stayed. And that was counted to him as righteousness from generation to generation forever.
Ps 106:28-31
We sometimes have to not only intercede but intervene.
Keep the flock safe
Protectors of Righteousness -
2 Chronicles 23:19 ESV
He stationed the gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the Lord so that no one should enter who was in any way unclean.

PRAYER WATCHES

Mark 13:34–35 ESV
It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning—
Watches are a period of 3 hour time periods that divides a 24 hour day into 8 watches (4 night 4 day)
Mark 13:34-35
I will be focusing on the first 4 watches that are mentioned in the text.
In say “... And the evening and the morning were the first day”
And the evening and the morning were the first day
(1) The Evening / First Watch [6pm-9pm] - ()
There are 8 watches in the day
It is interesting that the first is in the evening as we usually consider the day as starting in the morning, But do you realize that the day really starts in the evening.
In say “... And the evening and the morning were the first day”
The 1st watch is the gate into the new day. Hence it is important that we take control of the gate that will ensure the days outcome. He who controls the gate controls the city.
Pray , Shutting down the plans and activities of the enimy, and all curses released.
Releasing Gods blessings over the day.
(2) The Midnight / Late Night Watch [9pm-12am] - ()
During this watch, intercessors are able to impact the spiritual realm before the enemy gets ready to wreck havoc. says, “At midnight I will rise to give thanks to You because of Your righteous judgments.” It was at the midnight hour that God struck down the first-born of Egypt, Judging them which resulted in His people being released from captivity
It is when during this time assignments and sabotage from the enemy are set in motion. This is why it is important for intercessors at this watch to pray for God’s protection over their families, cities, and nations: Let God arise and His enemies be scattered” ().

(3) The Rooster Crow / Middle night watch [12am-3am] - ()
The Witching Hour - This watch is the darkest and most demonic part of the night, especially at midnight. Witches, warlocks, and satanists have fun and start their incantations during this part of the night. The devil operates at this time because this is the time that men are in a deep sleep and there are not as many people praying to oppose him (). This watch calls for seasoned intercessors.

If we pray effectively it can be devastation to the plans of the enemy.
