Work out Your Salavation

Philippians 2:
Philippians 2:12–13 NIV
12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
Salvation
God is speaking into the church at Philippi
yes we have a mission for our individual salvation - being set free in Christ
yet there is a mission for the church to be completely in Christ
a second therefore = Jesus exalted to the right hand
Jesus is head of the church so
15  Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16  From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
working together is a noble task and has its obligations and responsibilities
therefore continue is the key here
continue in acts of obedience
God at work in you
we know that it is God at work within us
Your acts of obedience
our sinful nature prevents us from doing anything outside the taint of sin - our human best alone is not good enough
Jesus died so that we can be cover by the best of Christ which is above all
our worst in Jesus’ best is good enough
to fulfill God’s purpose in us we must let God do that purpose
Paul offers some pertinent insights into what we must do
Fulfill God’s Good Purpose
to fulfill God’s purpose in us we must let God do that purpose
Paul offers some pertinent insights into what we must do
there are what I call our acts of obedience
Your acts of obedience
Your acts of obedience
Fulfill God’s Good Purpose
Fulfill God’s Good Purpose
pretty simple instruction given by Paul
no grumbling, no arguing
grumbling is a sign of selfishness
I know what is better and is part of the me me me culture
grumbling takes the eyes off God’s purose and Jesus’sacrifice
grumbling is declaring that I know what is best and I am not going to accept it
arguing is a sign of lack of submission to one another and to leadership
arguing could be actually worse because it is louder and more in your face
quickest way to destroy unity and function within the fellowship
grumble about others and argue with the vision and direction of the fellowship
lets us come together with a spirit of unity and a passion for the Kingdom
Jesus Christ brings eternity into our reality

Philippians 2:14–16 NIV
14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.

jesus Christ desires us to be pure and blameless
Blameless and Pure
there is a call for us as believers to be pure and blameless
there is also a call for us as a corporate body of Christ to be the same
No Grumbling or Arguing
Warped and Crooked Generation
Paul refers to the OT passage in Deuteronomy but broadens its application
Deuteronomy 32:5 NIV
5 They are corrupt and not his children; to their shame they are a warped and crooked generation.
D
it is now the church that is living in a perverse world
it is our destiny as a church to be shining stars, to reflect the holiness of Jesus
we can do it but not if we argue or grumble
4. Stars in the Sky
the love of Christ will shine through us as a church
we keep hold of the word, our faith , our knowing why we are here
