God wouldn't come down to Earth just to save us?
Leap into Conflict
• - Devils Minion
• Only God
• Like 7:39 Not even a prophet
• Luke 119:39 Didn’t event want his miracles acknowledged
• He didn’t come from Bethel
• He heals on the sabbath
• What about John , he would be a more proper candidate
Let me tell you why Jesus doesn't fit our image of a Messiah
Backstory
He’d didn’t act like we wanted him to
He doesn’t talk like a messiah should
He’s definitely not part of our inner circle
He hangs out with all the wrong people
Why wouldn’t they believe
What should the messiah looked like in their minds
Fleshly descendent of David, If jesus was truly born of a virgin, this was not possible and a stumbling point for the Jews.
Then, surrounded by the Pharisees, Jesus asked them a question:
Matthew 22:41
Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory. The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine. You will enlarge the nation of Israel, and its people will rejoice. They will rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest and like warriors dividing the plunder. For you will break the yoke of their slavery and lift the heavy burden from their shoulders. You will break the oppressor’s rod, just as you did when you destroyed the army of Midian. The boots of the warrior and the uniforms bloodstained by war will all be burned. They will be fuel for the fire. For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!
Isaiah 9:1-
,
Messiah would be a earthly King who would save Israel - He says this is not his kingdom here
Now let me tell you why he did come
Name the Stakes
Whats at stake if he didn’t come down
why was his humanity so important
why was his divinity just as important
Why he picked the men he did
Why he chose the outcast
why its important to you
He came in sinful flesh
Fulness of time
He was made flesh and blood to show us that death has no hold and is not to be feared
Not a part of man and a part of God, but fully and wholly and completely one
To show us and lead us
He was hungry desires have a right time and a wrong time a right way and a wrong way.
Mark1:12-23 Tempted but not sinning. He understands your weakness . He’s been there
Leader - Example - Baptism was not required but needed to show us the example
Christ - The perfect leader -leads you
the perfect model - he is our model
the perfect sacrifice - died for you
the perfect conqueror - conquered death hell and the grave
the perfect high priest = merciful, loving, understanding
To present the image of God - the model of God Character
John says became flesh - human
made his home pitched his tent
Image of the invisible God
- Expound on this point
why the pharisses and Saducces never got it
Revisit the Conflict
what was his attitude to those who rejected him
what was attitude toward those who received him
why the outcast chose him
why you and I can believe it
God’s do come down and
God’s will send their only son
HIs humanity was just as important as his divinity
He was born, grew, ate, slept, emotional, died
Two naturals - conceived by the Holy Spirit in a human womb- Fully God and fully man
Messiah was not Divinity
He a a deliverer but not the one they were looking for …Batman phase here
He was a king but not but not of this earth just yet
They wanted a National Exhalation of Israel not a worldwide salvation
They were the exclusive reps for God here not Jesus
Didn’t need or want a heavenly messiah
Really didn’t want the Gentiles to have what they had
No concept of a equally divine and equally human messiah
Pharisees rejection led to the to the lowly acceptance
Their Messiah was a very high ruler not a down to earth man
The believed the boundary to cross into the light was being made too easy
Again Messiah not equal to a God
He spoke with authority
No other could save but a God, not bull, goats, no blood, no sacrifice
New Living Translation Chapter 4
25 The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus told her, “I AM the Messiah!”
Max Lucado, in his book, God Came Near, just after picturing the birth, describes what people were doing while this dramatic event occurred undramatically. "Meanwhile, the city hums. The merchants are unaware that God has visited their planet. The innkeeper would never believe that he had just sent God out into the cold. And the people would scoff at anyone who told them the Messiah lay in the arms of a teenager on the outskirts of their village. Those who missed His Majesty’s arrival, missed it not because of evil acts or malice; No, they missed it because they simply weren’t looking, they weren’t attentive. Little has changed in the last 2000 years, has it?" I think we miss God working in our lives sometimes because we’re searching for the spectacular, the dramatic.
