19 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.
20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,
21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.
22 And therefore “it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
As we considered Vs 16-18 we could see that the promise that was given you Abraham, namely, that he would be heir of the world, was not given to Abraham only but also to those who are of the faith Abraham. And because it was this particular faith that was accounted to him for righteousness it then becomes very important that we have this kind of faith. There are many different kinds of faith but only this kind of faith can save you.
23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did.
24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men,
This is not saving faith. This is not the faith of Abraham.
19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!
Genuine faith, saving faith produces fruit. But saving faith is not only the faith of conversion. Genuine faith is the key to a victorious life and abundant life in Christ.
It is lack of faith that causes us to fall to sin and remain in bondage to sin even if we have genuine saving faith in Christ.
31 And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat.
32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”
33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”
34 Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”
Satan asked for him
Jesus prayed that his faith would not fail.
When you come back, strengthen your brethren.
6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,
7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,
We need our faith to be strengthen. How is our faith strengthen? Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.
So let’s look again at the faith of Abraham as we evaluate our own faith.
1. To Consider Circumstances Outside of the Reality God is Weakness of Faith
1. To Consider Circumstances Outside of the Reality God is Weakness of Faith
19 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.
Abraham’s circumstances were that having a child was physically impossible. Any logical, rational person would agree that this couple should not be preparing a baby’s room or buying baby clothes. But because of the reality of God and who he is and what he promised Abraham disregarded his circumstances, he did not consider his circumstances.
23 Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him.
24 And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep.
25 Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”
26 But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
27 So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
Perhaps you have circumstances in your life this morning which would cause you to fear. Do not consider those circumstances outside the reality of God. If you genuine faith in God then you have nothing else to fear. Your life is in His hands.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
2. To be Strengthened in Faith in the Face of Adversity Gives God Glory
2. To be Strengthened in Faith in the Face of Adversity Gives God Glory
20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,
He did not hesitate at the promise of God. When we hesitate at the promises of God our faith is weak.
Abraham did not waver through lack of faith but was strengthened in faith. How did Abraham strengthen his faith.
By the word of God. Which in Abraham’s case was the promise of God. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.
Do you doubt that God is aware of your circumstances. Do you doubt that God will take care of you.
25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;
29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
Do you doubt that you will overcome some besetting sin in your life?
6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.
8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,
9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.
10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.
11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.
13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Do you doubt that you will be able to endure the trials that you face?
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
Do you doubt that God can forgive you?
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Do you doubt that God is able or willing to keep you until the day of salvation
12 For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.
Do you doubt that he will complete the work that he has begun?
6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;
Do you fear death do you doubt the resurrection
54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
55 “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.
57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
When Abraham strengthen his faith God was glorified. God is glorified when we acknowledge that he is God and he is able. Abraham faith acknowledged that God is glorious. When we believe God we receive the promise but God gets the glory. When we doubt God we belittle Him. We say with our doubt “you are not able, you are not faithful”. But when we believe God, our faith declares “you are able, you are trustworthy you are almighty God”
