Jesus was always travelling. He is almost non-stop in his moving from one village to another in hopes to proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel.
The world needs more hospitality.
Martha must have had this gift because we read in our Scripture for today she welcomed Jesus in her home as a guest.
Mary chose to act like a disciple.
This was astonishing in those days. In fact, some places in our world and even in the church this is astonishing.
Martha was distracted.
There was a lot to do and many people in and out. Martha was busy, not the issue, but became distracted that others we not as busy.
Stop comparing!
This is hard, in fact, I am really bad at this most months.
Sometimes anxiety is because of comparison.
One of the groups which this is true is moms. I realize this is Father’s Day but moms can give and take anxiety based on another moms opinion, kid, etc. Dads and men we also can fall into this trap if we are not careful.
Martha was not doing something wrong.
Jesus never rebukes Martha because of what Mary was doing.
Mary chose the better option that day.
Jesus wasn’t saying Mary never had to help around the house. All he is saying is on this occasion Mary chose the better option.
Jesus is counter-cultural.
He allowed a woman, Mary, to sit at his feet as if she was a disciple and he was her rabbi.
Jesus treats us individually.
We will never be asked to be someone other than who He created us to be.
Our task: Choose the better option.
This will require wisdom, focus on Jesus and not comparing ourselves with others.
