Purpose

Understand God as the best Father and how we can honor him in our daily life.

1. What is Father’s Day

A day to celebrate and honor fathers and the important role that they play in God’s design.
Started to be observed in the United States in the early 1900’s.
In other countries where Roman Catholicism has more history and influence, fathers day is celebrated on March 19th because it is connected to St. Joseph’s Day (the “father” of Jesus) . This started in 1479 -over 500 years ago! This holiday does not seem to have any connection at all to the start of the recognition of Fathers Day in the USA.
It is estimated that 16 billion will be spent in the US on Fathers Day this year
The U.S Census Bureau reports that there are currently 72 million fathers in the U.S; of that number, 74% are married, 13% are divorced, 3% widowed and 2% separated.
When I say the word “father” what comes to your mind?
A man who has a child
Originator
One of the leading men of a larger group
A man who relates to another as a father relates to a child
Scripture uses the word “father” close to 1,000 times so it is obviously an important word to understand. The gospel of John uses the word over 120 times!

2. Who is an example of a good father?

That is all very impressive, but that isn’t what truly defined him
In the early 1960’s he and his wife started a home for troubled youth
He became a father to youth and today there are numerous locations throughout the US providing a Christ-centered approach to bring transformation to young men’s lives.
He no longer lived a self-centered life
Noah -a man who followed God
He was able to stand alone and guide his house in building the ark
Abraham -known as the father of faith

God knew Abraham would command his family in the ways of God
Abraham was not passive but a man of obedience
Moses -a father of a nation
Interceded for God’s mercy
Lead and judged them for over 40 years
The apostles -they were fathers to the early church
They cared for and poured themselves out for the people
The perfect example of a father is a man who was never married -Jesus Christ!
He said that if someone saw him, it was the same as seeing the Father -
Jesus said that he only did those things that he saw the Father doing -
Jesus said that he and his Father where one -
He showed us how to love & serve

When God said this, it was a rebuke, he wants us to know him

3. What does scripture say about a father & how children should relate to him?

Colossians 3:20 KJV 1900
Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Like as a father pitieth his children, So the Lord pitieth them that fear him.

As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.

This shows how we are called to be in relationship, he desires to totally fill that role -protect, provide, nurture, be our source
Our theme verse says we are called to walk in fellowship with one another -but our fellowship with each other is built on our relationship with our heavenly Father

4. What kind of Father is God?

He desires to bless us
He blessed Adam and Eve as soon as he created them
He gave blessings throughout the whole Bible to those who choose to follow and obey him
He is merciful

Our heavenly Father loves us perfectly -he is good. He has provided everything for us that we need -we just need to receive by faith. He has ALREADY done it. He isn’t overlooking some people. As we spend time with Him we will learn to discern His voice
He wants to be made and kept holy in our lives
He wants to be holy as he is -
He wants us to pray/ask for his will to be done in earth as in heaven
He wants to partner with us -

Again, we can look at the life of Jesus to get a good understanding of who the Father is

5. How do we honor our heavenly Father?

Matthew 5:16 KJV 1900
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
God blesses the evil and the good -and he wants us to do the same

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
We honor God by receiving his gifts -the gifts of the Holy Spirit
How do we honor? Represent Him in every way, love Him, serve Him
Paul tells us to earnestly desire spiritual gifts -why? to build up the church, so God can be glorified

To the degree that we think naturally, carnally or in ways that aren’t in line with our Father God, we also will not understand how our heavenly Father operates.

6. Our Heavenly Father’s blessing to us

There are two distinct ideas. First, a blessing was a public declaration of a favored status with God. Second, the blessing endowed power for prosperity and success. In all cases, the blessing served as a guide and motivation to pursue a course of life within the blessing.
It is to be granted special favor by God with resulting joy and prosperity. In the New Testament, however, the emphasis is more on spiritual rather than on material blessings.
As believers in Jesus we receive all his blessings by faith -we first obey, then expect God to fulfil His Word

The Holy Spirit or Comforter, to guide and teach us all things
Hear -he will establish your identity, you are his son/daughter, you are incredibly valuable to him, he has a purpose for you

7. How can fathers bless others?

How can they bless they wife, their children, those who look up to them?
More that anything, I believe God is looking for fathers who hear his voice, and follow him.
The greatest gift a man can his children is to be a man who loves God with his whole heart, loves their mother secondly, & loves them as Christ.

How do you know if you are being lead of the Spirit?
Are you walking in faith?
Is your life producing joy, peace, and righteousness?
Are living honorably in the eyes of everyone -including God?
Speak a blessing -speak life!
Be children of the Father who reflect who he is to the world around us

Conclusion
Our heavenly Father has loved us beyond comprehension, blessing us with every spiritual blessing and has adopted us as his own children by Jesus Christ. Allow him to continually impart his identity to you.
Father’s, you have the calling & responsibility to bless you children verbally -just as you have been blessed by your heavenly Father...
