Genesis 6:1-13

Basic Proposition:  Sin is a Disaster that plagues mankind.  God hates sin so much that He destroyed His beloved creation to cleanse it and He promises someday to purify it again this time with Fire.  Will we be ready?

1)       The Sin (vs. 5-7) - God was repulsed at what his creation was doing.  All creation was overrun by evil.  At the fall it became impossible for a person not to sin. How much God Hates Sin!

a.        A Disaster – (Romans 5:12) It is a disaster that affects more than just the individual.  It does nothing but bring destruction.

b.       A Divider – It divides man from God, families, friends, and anything in its path.  The devil means divider.

c.         A Disease – It is a poison that spreads throughout the body and eventually destroys a person.  Do not be deceived sin is DEATH! (Romans 6:23; James 1:15)

2)     The Stench (vs. 6) - Sin is wretched and nauseating in the sight of God and He cannot dwell with it. It is like a disease that a person becomes infected with.  In order to become healthy again the person must rid the body of its infection. How much God will Punish Sin!

a.        The Purity of God – God is holy!  We must understand and always remember this fact that God is holy. (I John 5:17; Isaiah 64:6)

b.       The Passion of God - God is passionate about His creation and passionate about His Perfection. God was so utterly disgusted with the evil that was ruling over His creation. (Exodus 20:5; Leviticus 27:14-28)

c.         The Power of God - God is powerful and will stop at nothing to rid Himself of the stench of sin. He hates sin so much He wanted to purge the world through destruction and reconstruction.

3)      The Solution (vs. 8-13) - God resolved to destroy the earth but save Noah if he followed God's plan of salvation through the ark. It is a picture of salvation, but the importance is the housecleaning act which God performs.  How much we must purify ourselves from Sin!

a.        A Weather Prediction – The forecast calls for inclement weather conditions, Judgment, Wrath and Punishment.  Get out of the path of destruction; don’t hang around (linger). (2 Peter 3:7,12)

b.       A Witness Protection - Like the ark Christ provides protection those who lay claim as His witnesses.  Get into the ark for protection.

c.         A Washing Purification - Get clean! God will purge the earth of sin by fire as He once did by water.  Cleansing yourself is a whole lot easier than being cleansed by God. (Matt. 21:44) God wants us to come clean and gives us every opportunity to do so.

Personal Application

When we are saved we must do a house cleaning.  Our goal should be to rid the sin and wickedness in our lives.  We want to appear blameless before God and the first step is to be washed through the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ, which is represented here through the flood.  Am I cleaning house so that God does not have to for me?
