1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, 3 so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land. 4 Fathers, don’t stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
--------------------
What to teach them? — Start with the greatest Commandment
28 One of the scribes approached. When he heard them debating and saw that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, “Which command is the most important of all?”
29 Jesus answered, “The most important is Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is, Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these.”
--------------------
Came straight from Dt. — This is what God has been commanding the Israelites to do for thousands of years.
6 These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. 7 Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
--------------------
What words are we to repeat to the children, two previous verses
4 “Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
--------------------
These are not the only words Moses was referring to. Let’s look at the three verses before these
1 “This is the command—the statutes and ordinances—the Lord your God has commanded me to teach you, so that you may follow them in the land you are about to enter and possess. 2 Do this so that you may fear the Lord your God all the days of your life by keeping all his statutes and commands I am giving you, your son, and your grandson, and so that you may have a long life. 3 Listen, Israel, and be careful to follow them, so that you may prosper and multiply greatly, because the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you a land flowing with milk and honey.
--------------------
Verse 1 — This is the command — the statutes and ordinances — the Lord your God has commanded me to teach you… What commands, what statutes and ordinances?
Dt. Chapter 5 — 10 Commandments
So is God some distant being that you will meet one day when you die? Or is He your father, here with you everyday that you have a personal relationship with?
What is your purpose in this life? Why are we here?
greatest command for you to follow
30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is, Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these.”
--------------------
What does that look like practically from day to day while you are on this earth? Does it just mean to have a good feeling in your heart towards God when you think about him? Is that what it means to love Him?
3 For this is what love for God is: to keep his commands. And his commands are not a burden,
--------------------
After Jesus rose from the dead, he visited and taught his disciples for 40 days before ascending to Heaven and this is the last thing He told them.
18 Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
--------------------
He gave us a mission. Four commands. One mission.
Make disciples.
That’s our mission on this earth until we are called home. That’s our purpose. That’s your purpose.
love God, now and forever more.
Make disciples, only now.
Are you a disciple of Jesus christ? Have you been taught to obey everything he has commanded you? simple test. Do you know what he has commanded you to do?
Have you grown to maturity as a disciple, and have you started making disciples? Are you growing as a disciple, and are you discipling others? That’s why we as a church exist.
11 And he himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 equipping the saints for the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ,
--------------------
Fathers, you can start with another man discipling you here at this church, and you can start by discipling your children.
