Blessed are you:

Matthew 5
Matthew 5:1–12 HCSB
1 When He saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain, and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 2 Then He began to teach them, saying: 3 “The poor in spirit are blessed, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs. 4 Those who mourn are blessed, for they will be comforted. 5 The gentle are blessed, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are blessed, for they will be filled. 7 The merciful are blessed, for they will be shown mercy. 8 The pure in heart are blessed, for they will see God. 9 The peacemakers are blessed, for they will be called sons of God. 10 Those who are persecuted for righteousness are blessed, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs. 11 “You are blessed when they insult and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of Me. 12 Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Jesus Blesses the ones who have been overlooked.

He is talking to the crowd who is out there. The ones who have been overlooked and then gives them a charge.
Just the folks who are working to make a difference in the world.
Matthew 5:13 HCSB
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by men.

Being Salt

Can Salt lose it’s taste?
Resist Evil: Not the evil person. but the evil in the world.
“I’m a stripper.”
The Girl who was all white attack on me. It took Jesus to quell the argument.
Resist & Preserve that which is good and bring flavor to it.
we are to live to make an impact on the world.
When we live in the world but not of the world.
Romans 12:1–2 The Message
1 So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. 2 Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

John 2:15 HCSB
15 After making a whip out of cords, He drove everyone out of the temple complex with their sheep and oxen. He also poured out the money changers’ coins and overturned the tables.
1 John 2:15 HCSB
15 Do not love the world or the things that belong to the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him.
John 15:19 HCSB
19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you.
John 17:14–16 HCSB
14 I have given them Your word. The world hated them because they are not of the world, as I am not of the world. 15 I am not praying that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, as I am not of the world.
Someone who resists and preserves is one who has his eye on Jesus and his feet on the ground.

“In” the World: It’s Our Point of Location

Being in a place is not being of a place.

“Of” the World: It’s Our Source of Information

“Of” the World: It’s Our Source of Information

what is our primary source of influence?
The Girl who stripped. had a source of information that defined her worldview
The Man with the Business plan had a source of information
The African American had a source of information.
We were all in the same location.

Being Light

Matthew 5:14–16 HCSB
14 “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
Mathew 5:14-16
I have one calling. Be one who brings life and resists evil and be one who sheds light on Jesus.
It was in two of the three conversations that only this mattered.
What does sallt and Light look like to you?
How have you been in that this week?
