Introduction to the Psalms.
Introduction to the Psalms.
The book of Psalms is made up of all different types of songs and prayers to God.
Its awesome because there is a prayer in here that helps with almost everything we go through in our lives.
Much of the Psalms are written by one of the greatest Biblical kings who ever lived.
King David.
David and other people who God used to write the book of Psalms were people who knew God personally.
Tonight, we look at the words of these people who knew God so we and we can learn from them how we can become closer to Him ourselves.
So many people make christianity something so complicated and sometimes we get so into the details that we lose track of what its all about.
There are so many lies that the enemy wants to use to distract us from really knowing God.
The enemy wants us to think that its all about who can read the most or pray the most or who comes to church the most.
Who can be the nicest, but I need you to know that being a Christian is not all about who can be the nicest person.
Being nice and doing the right things and going to the right places are not what makes us right with God.
With all the confusion and all the lies that distract us from God, God actually wants us to know what He wants.
He does not want us to go on confused wondering what we are suppose to do and out we are suppose to live.
Tonight, we are going to look at a Psalm that is a prayer to God.
One of the reason that the Psalms are so awesome is because they make things so simple.
Read
1 As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
3 My tears have been my food
day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”
4 These things I remember
as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God
under the protection of the Mighty One
with shouts of joy and praise
among the festive throng.
5 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.
When I was playing football in college our coaches would tell us all the time to make sure we were drinking enough water.
Our workouts and practices were so crazy that we had to weight in and out before and after each practice or workout.
We would regularly lose several pounds in one single practice.
When you lose wheat that fast its all water.
that really just means that your body went through that much water during practice.
I remember weighing in before one practice at 212 pounds and I weighed in after practice at 202 pounds!
That means I ran through 10 pounds of water in 2 hours!!! That’s more than a gallon!
but here was the funny part.
However much weight you lost from sweating all your water out you had to drink that much water before practice the next day and if you didn't get rehydrated then you couldn't practice or play at all.
One summer, the coaches were not using the scale and they were just taking the players word for it.
They would tell us to weigh ourselves and make sure to drink all our water before the next practice.
Of course there is always someone who thinks they can go without it and so they decide not to drink enough water in between practices.
Well, towards the end of practice, we were finishing up some sprints and that guy passed out.
He had to be rushed to the E.R. and get pumped with fluids all because he thought He could go without water.
shares how this happens sometimes between us and God.
Just like that player did with water, sometimes we think we dont really need God.

The Psalmist finally came to a point in His life that when He was in need, feeling down, or lost, instead of looking to other things he would redirect himself back to God.
Application
I want to challenge you all to do the same.
When you are going through hard times or you feel like you need hep, I want to challenge you THIS WEEK to take it to God.
