Samuel and Saul
Samuel and Saul
Tell story of Samuel and the Sauls anointing.
Samuel the prophet
Elders of Israel wanted a king
Samuel warned them not a good idea
Saul appointed King
Saul did great at first! He won a lot of battles. Conquered land that was taken form Israel and got it back.
Then he started getting a little arrogant and built a statue in his own name.
He started getting distant from God. Stopped listening to what God was telling him.
Three times in the Bible, it says God had regretted doing something. TWO OF THE THREE was God saying that he regretted making Saul King.
There was a time when God had told Saul to do something but Saul didn’t do it. Why? Because he wanted to fit in. He wanted to be accepted. He wanted to be liked.
“I’ve sinned. I’ve trampled roughshod over God’s Word and your instructions. I cared more about pleasing the people. I let them tell me what to do”
He was more worried about pleasing people than God.
After that the Bible says that the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul...
David’s anointed King
David’s anointed King
Samuel is upset because Saul has failed in the eyes of the Lord. The Lord asks Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel…fill your horn with oil and go.”
The Lord directs Samuel to Jesse’s house in Bethlehem.
David is in the feild
Jesse and all his sons are dressed up hoping they are the one but after Samuel tries the first one, the lord tells him, “Men look at the outside, I judge the heart.” () And all his sons are turned about.
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
Side note: how many people are grateful that God doesn’t judge on the outward appearance? He doesn’t judge like people do. God doesn’t judge you by how many pairs of yeezys you have. or how much money you’ve got. How long its taken you to finish college. You know what I mean?!
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
Jesse is asked if he has any other sons and he tells Samuel, yea I have another son but he’s out tending the sheep. (don’t worry about him. He’s not important. You sure its not one of my other sons?
Samuel says, nope bring your youngest here and check him out.
The bible says, he was dark, had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. Must have been talking about Adam.
The Lord says, “Anoint him for this is he! He was anointed in front of his brothers and the spirit of the lord rushed into David.
Number 8 is new beginnings.
Anointed to be the next King of Israel and once your anointed, no man can take that anointing away from you. The only thing that can take that anointing away from you is God. Just like he did with Saul. Saul was anointed at first but Saul started doing things his own way so God took his anointing.
Goes back the field. Why? Bc its not time for him to leave yet. He’s still got some growing to do. Hes got to Finish what God has called him to do.
Finish what God has called you to do
Finish what God has called you to do
Be patient in the process. Master your craft. Once God is done molding you for your next assignment, He will call you. So many times we rush and say, “Alright God, I’m waiting on you.” or girls will be like, “idk, I’m just waiting for God to show me where to go.”
You know what David did while he was waiting, he was learning how to use a sling shot. He wasn’t Netflix and chilling all day, taking naps. He was mastering his craft all alone while was secluded away from civilization in the middle of no where. Him and God. Always in the presence of God. He was the best lyre player in town but he wasn’t going out playing gigs, bc thats not what God called him to do! He was busy on Thirsty Thursdays watching his sheep! Maybe God is waiting on your to master your craft.
I knew a guy back in Alabama. He was engaged and his fiance got a job opportunity out of state. Well, they got married and moved out west but he didn’t have any job lined up and as the man, you want to provide. Well, he started helping out at this organization and he was a good worker. So they contracted him to work for about 6 months. Well, that six months ended and they were back to single income until he guy found another job. Until then he started volunteering at this organization and they loved his commitment, hard work, and loyalty. They noticed that he had grown in certain skills since they met him. Well. the organization leaders talked, so they hired him. And now, a year in, he manages two departments. BECAUSE HE DIDN’T WAIT AROUND. In your waiting, you still need to be hustling and grinding. Not just waiting around on God drinking coffee at Coffee Waves. Or maybe, God is waiting on you to finished the last thing he called you to do...
Sometime later, Saul begins to be tormented by an evil spirit. His servant was like, bro let find someone who can tickle the ivory or shred on the guitar. That’ll soothe your nerves. Another servant says, hey I hear Jesse’s boy, David, playing his guitar ALL THE TIME. and it sounds awesome. ALSO, He is brave (valor), man of war (kills bears and lions), he speaks real well (prudent in speech), and a he’s good hangs! (good presence) IN ADDITION (The Lord is with him)!!!
English Standard Version Chapter 16
Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the LORD is with him.”
David is called to the palace
David is called to the palace to play for the king because of what he was practicing in in private. all alone.
He wasn’t, “Hey look at me on instagram, look how good I can shred.”
He didn’t audition. He didn’t have to fight for a spot. He didn’t have to use his connections. He didn’t have to cheat his way, because he was anointed and skillful. And when you are anointed and called to be somewhere, its going to happen.
Saul was really digging David and told Jesse, “He man, I’m going to keep David here. Hope thats cool. And not only is he going to play guitar for me. I’m actually going to make him a part of the royal court so he can be around me 24/7.”
The last verse,
English Standard Version Chapter 16
23 And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
Even though David knew he was called to be King, he came to the palace as a servant. He came to serve the leader that was appointed over him for the time being.
Are you serving your leadership? At Chick-fil-A. (Well everyone at Chick-fil-a is awesome so lets pick somewhere else. At Hu-Dat on Saratoga and Staples, are you serving your boss? Are you trying to do things your way? BUT PS EMIL I CAN MAKE RICE WAY BETTER THAN HOW THEY TAUGHT ME....
Not one time does the Bible say, “David gave Saul lip”. He obeyed his leadership. David, the future king of Israel, went to the palace as a servant. You know who else came as a servant? JESUS.
Cool story, the number 8 symbolises new beginnings/ Maybe you need a new beginning.
Salvation
You might be the best speaker in this room, but God hasn’t called you to start speaking yet.
