What are the Beatitudes? _________________________________ ______________________________________________________
Beautiful Blessings!!
Blessed=right with God to experience His pleasure and favor
There is a cause and effect or a if this then that, can you see it?
If you are poor in spirit, destitute or bankrupt, bringing nothing to the table to warrant or earn salvation then you realize your need for a savior and yours is the kingdom of heaven bc you’ll come to Jesus.
These beatitudes are progressive in development, recognize need because of sin, you receive the kingdom and are comforted. That makes you meek bc you know you can’t do anything to earn, you have power but not really.
This develops a hunger and thirst for right standing for all people with God and then with others
You then grow in giving mercy because you realize God has given mercy to you.
This changes your heart, it becomes more pure, you don’t seek revenge, don’t do things with impure motives, instead you desire to be a peacemaker first with others then for others to have with God.
But when we truly embrace this way, we will be persecuted, people will not want this, they will make fun of us, even come strongly against us. We talked on this in chapel.
But being persecuted for Jesus proves we are all in and truly members of the countercultural kingdom of God.
Jesus is the ultimate example of these, He is the picture that these beatitudes are painting.
Now Jesus gives us 2 physical examples of what we, blessed people, should be like, salt and light.
Matthew 5:13–16 ESV
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:
What is unique about salt and light? Why would Jesus use these 2? __________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Salt—This is a call to true followers in regards to proclaiming the Word of God, His message about the Kingdom of Heaven and it’s King.
Salt—a valuable commodity in the old world that was used for trading, we get our word salary from the latin “salarius
Salt flavors and it preserves
Good people would trade pure salt, but “unrighteous” people would mix white sand in with the salt so they would have more to trade.
This would make the salt less effective, lose some of its flavor and preserving ability and quickly become useless.
Believers are to illuminate the way to Jesus, be noticeable and visible as light, to help dispel darkness, doing things as a result of our love of Jesus and our Father is a form of letting our light shine.
The ultimate form of light is being so like Jesus that people clearly see a difference and that difference is attributed to our being a follower of Jesus.
Acts 4:13 ESV
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.
Acts 4:14 ESV
But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition.
Why is this info about salt helpful in understanding why Jesus would use salt as an example of what His followers should be like? ________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________
Now let’s talk about light.
Light—noticeable, attracts, dispels darkness, helps to see, comes from a source, all forms are imitators of the true source, the Son.

Ultimately, our lives our to be lived for who’s glory? __________
Matthew 5:17–20 ESV
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
What does it mean to fulfill something? ___________________ ____________________________________________________
To fulfill for Jesus meant to “clarify” the true meaning of the law as a way of life, to truly follow and be obedient to it. It also meant to complete it, to accomplish all of it.
Matthew 5:18 ESV
For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
Matthew 5:18

Matthew 5:19 ESV
Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:19
What is Jesus calling His true followers to in regards to the Law? ________________________________________________
Complete and total adherence. To not relax even in the slightest on any of it. We will talk more on this as we go through it, but Jesus is the only one who ever did this.
Matthew 5:20 ESV
For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:
Why do you think Jesus brings up the scribes and the Pharisees here? _______________________________________________ ____________________________________________________
Pharisees—religious sect of Judaism depicted in the gospels as Jesus’ antagonists. They were men of prominence, wealth and position and considered themselves as the righteous followers of God who clearly has blessed them because of their strict adherence to the law.
Scribes were men who were considered to know the word of God so well because their job was to constantly rewrite the scriptures.
In this case “righteousness” would be the checked list of completed commands, not what Jesus teaches but how the Pharisees and scribes considered their right standing with God.
But Jesus isn’t only calling us to external adherence to the law, He’s calling us to be so transformed by Him and His love that we adhere to it internally.
The rest of this chapter and into chapter 6, Jesus will give examples on external verse internal adherence.
That will be our next study.
