Deuteronomy = deuteros+nomos = 2nd law = second giving of the law. the people of Israel had wandered in the wilderness and it was finally time to enter into the promise land but before they took the land God through Moses needed to remind them where they came from
and how they are supposed to live.
and how they are supposed to live.
as God’s people begin to enter there would be challenges that they must face. the land was filled with obstacles, strong men, fortified cities and even giants descendants of Anak. These nations that were in possession of the land at the time of their entering were filled with idols and false gods of worship and God knew that if His peoples hearts were to be solely wrapped up in him that he needed to remind them and instruct them on his commandments judgments, precepts, laws and ways. He reminds them of what He has done for them and he commands Moses to teach His people His commands statutes and judgments 4:1,5,14, 44-45; 5:1; 6:1
Look around at the world we live in today. Is the world any differnt than what it was during the time of Moses. Are we not living in a land that has no regard for the God of Heaven, are we not living in a land that is filled with idol worship and false gods. the danger of pride was apparent. Were the Israelites in any more danger than we are when comes to follow God. Do we not face many of the smae obstacles that they faced.
Whether we admit it or not, whether we like it or not Christianity and our faith is under attack. From the disregard for traditional marriage views (Godly marital views)We live in a treacherous world (spiritually)
what they forgot was that have Jehovah God on their side the creator all powerful God and he loved them and wanted them to live and be prosperous and he wanted them to love them.
Why was God so adamant about His people being faithful to him and learning all the statutes and laws etc. Make no mistake God loved His people! And it had nothing to with how great they were! ; , (even to the orphan, widow, and alien). God demonstrated that love time and time again. from leading them out of Egypt to the defeating of their foes to providing food and water in the wilderness. God demonstrated his love. Yahweh loves Israel wit a tender, undeserved yet determined almost fierce love that refuses to let them sink into idolatry and its depravity.
So what doe God’s love require?
If they would just love him if they would just fear him if they would just Keep God’s Commandments if they would just remember Him
God’s love demands that we love him
God want His people to love Him. 6:5; 10:12; 11:1; 11:13,22; 19:9; 30:6,16,20
love the lord your God with all your heart, soul, might. with all your emotional, spiritual, physical/mental being. God and God alone deserves our heart. And he is a jealous God for His people to love Him
heart - don’t let what God has done depart from your heart 4:9, you will find God if you search with your heart and soul 4:29, take it to heart that the Lord…4:39; 7:17, oh that they would have a heart…5:29, why did he test them, so that he would know what was in their heart 8:2, 5 (disciplining you); 13:3 11:13, impress these on your heart 11:18; don’t let your heart turn away 30:17
God’s desires our love he deserves our love and he doesn’t want just a little of our love he wants it all. He wants us to love him with every ounce of our being
And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me.
God love demands His people to fear Him
5:29; 6:2; 6:24; 8:6; 10:12,20; 13:4; 14:23 learn to fear
reverence yes but there is also the idea of fear and dread, don’t fear 3:22 the people or the false gods that inhabited the land or that set themselves up aginst them.
“Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments; His praise endures forever.
God’s love demands that we remember Him
4:9 forget the things you’ve seen, 4:23 don’t forget the covenant, 5:15 remember what God did when he brought you out of the land, 6:12, 8:2 how he led them through the wilderness, 8:11,14 your heart will go proud, 8:18-19 he gave you power, if you forget God you will surely perish
don’t we have a tendency to forget what God has done. Don’t we have a tendency when all things are going well to forget that it was God who got us here. forget God in new settings, forget god in the next generation
God’s love demands that we keep his commandments, statutes, judgments, law
law - to teach or direct, inspired revelation, all of the pentatuch
precepts - items concerned with every detail
statutes - the binding force and permanence of scripture
word general word embracing all of God’s truths
commandments - direct authority, he and he alone has the right to give orders
testimonies - direct and bold high standards set by God
promises - God’s directives that if followed have the hope of future blessings
ordinances - judgments and decisions of the all wise creator
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
nothing new to us today. God wants us to keep his commandments!
HOW DO WE ENSURE THAT WE KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS, THAT WE LOVE HIM, THAT WE DON’T FOR GET HIM, AND THAT WE FEAR HIM, AND FUTURE GENERATIONS DO THE SAME
We must teach his commandments
diligently - with great effort, endurance, with purpose
11:18 not suggest them but impress these word on your heart
our children will not learn the things of God by osmosis, not by watching television or youtube, or from their friends.
they will learn it if we teach them
how much time do we spend teaching them the things of the world vs. the things of God.
if they would justKeep God’s Commandments if they would just remember Him
God says we as parents and grand parents are responsible not the gov’t, school system, not even the church.
shall - means it is our responsibility, its a must not if you choose to or if you have time to do this
what regiment do you have in your family to teach them, what plan, what are you going to teach them
talk about them v.7
when you sit
when you walk
when you lie down
when you rise up
bind them on your hand and head and doorpost (Mezuzah)
do, keep, observe - we have to show our families what is right. Do what I say and not what I do. childrfen learn from the example that see
6:20 when your son ask - if our children see us living for God, they will ask us what is the meaning of this, why do we give and pray art all meals, we do we attend all services and refuse to miss for sports and school functions, why do we do good deeds for others, why do we worship they way that we do
Remind them of what God has done
Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
5. tell them all God has done for you how has provided, protected you, etc.
we must ell them about God’s amazing grace , his wonderful love ;, tell them how we were saved from sin, etc.
if they would just remember Him
