Setting yourself Up for Misery

Imagine a person who hates cats, they cant stand them, but works in a cattery. Imagine a person who cannt stand children, but becomes a teacher. imagine a person who gets sick at the sigt of blood, nd becomes a nurse.
Now I want you to imagine a person who hates disciplne but becomes a disciple. - Discipline is in our name friends.
And God is a loving father is going to help you becomes a good son.
Hebrews 12:7 ESV
7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
The proper understanding of chastening. Its nature is schooling. It is a normal part of life. He get given rules and boundries that exist for our saftry, benifit and prosperity. And we we dilibretly break those rules, cross those boundries and risk our prosperity. God has to and will teach us a lession, and it usally involves some kind of pain.
The proper understanding of chastening
Its nature is schooling
The proper response to chastening

Do not view it resentfully
Do not fail to pay it heed. Do not fail to learn from it
Do not fail to learn from it

Be not weary of His correction.
Hebrews 12:7 ESV
7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
heb 12 7
Endure under discipline. Dont act like a child who throws their hands up because of chastisement.
Do not judge amiss the Father’s dealings
Do not neglect present duty
Do not cherish morbid brooding over sorrows
Do not refuse to be comforted
Summary: No matter what comes in God’s school, we are not to despise it nor faint under it.

Assurance

Hebrews 12:11 ESV
11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
heb 12 11
Chastening is correction not pointless suffering.
God is not necessarily punishing us; He is trying to correct us
It is the correction of the family, not the school or prison
Chastening (correction) is a sign of God’s love
It is a sign of sonship
Hebrews 12:7 ESV
7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
There can be no closer relationship—correction is an integral part
He that escapes affliction may well question his adoption
He only corrects those whom He loves
Chastening (correction) is for our good
It is designed to “straighten us out”
To make us like what He wants us to be
To keep us from the harm of evil
It has specific purposes
It is individual—to show us our corruption
It is educational
It is tailored to our needs—Adam’s self-will, pride, independence, waywardness—and designed to break our negative traits
It is handled perfectly by God
The fittest time
The surest, gentlest means
The most considerate measure
The most effective instruments
Summary: We can bear up properly under chastening because we have these three great assurances: it is correction; it is a sign of God’s love; it is for our good

Applications

Honor God with everything
Honor prosperity by giving of your substance.
Proverbs 3:9–10 ESV
9 Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; 10 then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.
Honor chastening and affliction by giving your submission
Honor chastening and affliction by giving your submission
Seek to avoid the necessity of chastening
Matthew 26:41 ESV
41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Watch for first whispers of His will
Look for intimations of His providence
Seek the guidance of His eye
When it comes, accept it as part of the relationship
Reverence it as a sign you are under His hand
Expect a rich experience of His sustaining grace
Do not look at the rod; look at the hand that wields it
Examine every trial to see if there is correction in it
Not all His classes are corrective
Each should be examined
Seek to determine what is being corrected
Act upon it immediately so it can stop the pressure
Keep faith in time of affliction
Understand why He chastens—to correct
Acknowledge it as part of His gracious dealings with you

Conclusion:

The pain of suffering sometimes keeps us from seeing what God is doing in our lives. Sometimes He melts us in the furnace so He can stamp us with His own image. He wants us to partake of His holiness so we can partake of His happiness. If we compare our chastening with our sin, is it not a marvel that it is not heavier?
