Introduction
11 Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand. 12 As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ. 13 For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh. 14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. 15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. 16 And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. 17 From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. 18 Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
We come to the final sermon on Galations
We come to the final sermon on Galations
We come to the final sermon on Galations
Remember the theme:
Freedom in the gospel
What this does not mean
a license to sin
What it does mean
We are no longer defined by our sin
Rember the puropse of the Law
to show it is imposible to meet the requirements of the Law
I. A final warning (V. 11-13)
I. A final warning (V. 11-13)
I. A final warning (V. 11-13)
Paul comes to a conclusion in His letters in His conclusion He summerizes the Primary themes
Don’t be a leagelist
Salvation is a great free gift with one requirment…Faith
He begins by again adressing the dagers of the Judizers who demanded circumsision theese Judizers are also mentioned in
1 And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.
Paul refers to theese false teachers in three ways
They were people pleasers
They were afraid of persecution
they wanted to Boast about the number of galations they hopw to win to circumsision as a religious merrit earning right
The Judizer knew the effect of the cross would be lessened if they proclaimed salvation through faith and works.
notice what verse 13 says...
13 For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.
Paul is saying here theese false teachers do not keep the whole law they just want to force you to be circumsized so they can boast in this fact.
II. How great a salvation (V. 14-15)
II. How great a salvation (V. 14-15)
14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. 15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.
Gal
Paul gives the contrast here, the Judizers wanted to boast is convincing the galations they needed to be circumsized but there is nothing to boast in except what Christ has done for us.
What does say?
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
It is not by you!
it is not by works!
No man can Boast
It is Grace
It is through faith
It is a gift
There is no room for boasting in our salvation because we did nothing
What we boast in is How great of a God we have!
A. The world has been crusified to me and I to the World
We are to cast aside the things of the world once we become a believer we are no longer of the world.
Does this mean we can not enjoy parts of the world?
obviously not but rather we are different
if you were put on trial for being a Christian would there be enough evedince to convict you?
Notice how he goes on here
Circumsision does not count for anything
uncircumsision does not count for anything
but belief n Christ this is what counts!
It is all about having new life in Christ1
IT IS ABSOLUTLY VITAL NOTHING IS ADDED TO SALVATION
If we add to salvation we are making the claim that the blood of Christ was not enough!
but what happened when he died on the cross
He shouted “IT IS FINISHED”
III. Freedom (v. 16-18)
III. Freedom (v. 16-18)
Amen.
If we understand that nothing counts tward swalvation except for Christ himself we will have peace
Paul states that he bares on His body the marks of Jesues stating that like animals are branded I have been beaten for Christ so why in the world would I do this for my own gain as some of the Judizers have suggusted.
14 But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.
16 And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God.
17 From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.
18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.
Gal
How this applies today
Placing rules on other Christians that are not directly taught in the Bible
The heart is what is importent
