Father’s Day
Father’s Day
46 So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill.
47 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.
48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.”
49 The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
50 Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.
51 As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering.
52 So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”
53 The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household.
54 This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.
I remember one of the last BIG conversations me and my dad had. It wasn’t a long conversation but it was impactful. We were riding home from church and I was about to fill out a piece of paper and I asked to borrow his pen. It was my favorite pen he had. A black monte blanc with gold accents with the white top. I said dad I really want a pen like this. He told me how expensive they were and said I’ll make you a deal. If you read your Bible everyday for 3 months I’ll get you a pen like this before school starts. This conversation happened 2 weeks before he passed away.

Basilikos —> a high ranking official in Herod’s court
Capernaum to Cana is 20 miles that is a considerable distance.
47 When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.
Capernaum to Cana is 20 miles that is a considerable distance.
A high member of the royal court is going to the village carpenter of Nazareth.
The first thing we learn from this official is that pride should never stop us from seeking out Jesus.
He had a need so great that all he could do was come to a lowly village carpenter.
Jesus knows his intentions. Jesus knows that this man doesn’t know him. He only knows of him, and the powerful things he has done. This man comes with the hope that he will do something for him.
48 So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.”
Probably a dual purpose statement. Jesus doesn’t waste words.
Speaks to the crowd. They are there for the show not the teaching, not the truth. They are there to see how Jesus will do his next great feat.
Speaks to the official. He wants to make sure his heart is in line with his hope. He wants to make sure he is genuine.
Think of the rich young ruler when Jesus gives him a harsh rebuke he turns away distraught. When it would get difficult he decided it wasn’t worth it.
Jesus does the same thing here. A carpenter not being at the beck and call of an official would not be the social norm. By Jesus not immediately saying “yes, sure, whatever you need.” This is where the officials pride could have stopped his miracle.
John 4:49
49 The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
Jesus knows his intentions. Jesus knows that this man doesn’t know him. He only knows of him, and the powerful things he has done. This man comes with the hope that he will do something for him.
But unlike the rich young ruler he isn’t dissuaded by Jesus’ comment. He perseveres because he has the hope that Jesus will come through.
50 Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.
John 4:
What kind of faith must this have taken? Its one thing today when a doctor in a hospital says someone with an illness will live. We can immediately look at vital signs see improvement things like that. This man turns away to make the 20 mile journey back home with nothing but the trust of the words of Jesus.
We see in this moment the real faith of this man. In that day distance mattered. It was thought you had to be right there touching, breathing on, physically doing something for teh person to be healed. This is a huge step in this man’s faith journey.
Leaving the person he put his hope in, trusting that he did what he said he would do.
When is the last time you stepped out and trusted Jesus like that?
51 As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering.
52 So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”
53 The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household.
54 This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.
Good news comes to those who are on the path. When we start following what Jesus tells us to do good news is shared, but its not always immediate.
He had been walking home for a considerable amount of time. We don’t know what time he came to Jesus but we know what time the boy was healed.
51 As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering.
52 So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”

“yesterday at the 7th hour” That is yesterday at 1pm. This man has been walking home for a day not knowing, still in an attitude of hope and belief that somehow this carpenter could heel his son. He is holding on to the little bit of faith he has.
He keeps walking. He keeps hoping not knowing that Jesus has already worked it out he just can’t see it yet.
It is at this point that his faith is moved from smolder to raging inferno. He believes, his household believes. He doesn’t care what the cost will be. He knows this jewish carpenter from Nazareth is the Messiah.
Do you know that Jesus is Messiah?
He started walking not fully knowing, I would even say not fully believing, but Jesus used what little bit of faith he had to bring him into the full body of believers.
Do you know today that Jesus wants a real relationship with you?
53 The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household.
54 This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.
He wants to be more than a friend? He wants to be the one to tell God, here they are. They know me, they love me, they follow me. We can only have that relationship when we put away our pride, put ourselves aside and put our trust in Him.
Maybe you asked for something a long time ago and started down the path but along the way got lost, took a wrong turn, just stopped. Not knowing that Jesus was waiting for you to just keep walking to see what he was doing. To get your good news.
Maybe you asked for something a long time ago and started down the path but along the way got lost, took a wrong turn, just stopped. Not knowing that Jesus was waiting for you to just keep walking to see what he was doing. To get your good news.
Maybe you are here today and you have never asked Jesus for anything. You don’t need Jesus. Your pride says, “nope I got this”
This man’s faith was made complete because it wasn’t about him. He asked on behalf of his child. He knew that he couldn’t provide everything for him, but he knew someone that he hoped could.
My dad taught me a lot of things.
How to tie a tie
How to rope a cow
How to saddle a horse
How to throw curveball
How to care for people
How to be generous
How to seek after God
Where to find hope
I like this story because that day in the truck my dad taught me where to go to get the help I really needed. This official would always be reminded and remind his son of where his hope and life came from.
What are we teaching
There is nothing wrong with admitting we need help, and there is no greater helper than God.
Let’s seek Jesus for our hope today.
