Introduction:
Today is Father’s Day and I want to wish all of our fathers a Happy Father’s Day. I know we are already thinking about the plans that have been made for this afternoon to honor our fathers so I will only take a little time this morning to talk about three things we can learn about being a dad from King David. When you think about King David what comes to your mind? Man after God’s own heart? David and Goliath? One who spared King Saul? The guy who slept with another woman and had her husband killed? What about “dad”?
There are three things I would like to look at this morning in that we can learn from in order to be better fathers. And this not only applies to dads but to everyone: moms, sons, daughters, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
Let’s take a look!
Body:
I. David paid so much attention to the kingdom that he neglected his family

6 Now his father, King David, had never disciplined him at any time, even by asking, “Why are you doing that?” Adonijah had been born next after Absalom, and he was very handsome.

16 For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind.
17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.
18 And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.
B. He gave them free reign

1 After this, Absalom bought a chariot and horses, and he hired fifty bodyguards to run ahead of him.
5 About that time David’s son Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, began boasting, “I will make myself king.” So he provided himself with chariots and charioteers and recruited fifty men to run in front of him.

6 For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”

C. Solomon seemed different and relied on the promise of God throughout this whole ordeal as he didn’t plan or scheme to get the throne but he stayed out of it altogether until David made him king.

II. David listened to Bathsheba and Nathan’s advice/concern/reminder
A. He must have forgot the promise he made to Solomon
5 David said, “My son Solomon is still young and inexperienced. And since the Temple to be built for the Lord must be a magnificent structure, famous and glorious throughout the world, I will begin making preparations for it now.” So David collected vast amounts of building materials before his death.
6 Then David sent for his son Solomon and instructed him to build a Temple for the Lord, the God of Israel.
7 “My son, I wanted to build a Temple to honor the name of the Lord my God,” David told him.
8 “But the Lord said to me, ‘You have killed many men in the battles you have fought. And since you have shed so much blood in my sight, you will not be the one to build a Temple to honor my name.
9 But you will have a son who will be a man of peace. I will give him peace with his enemies in all the surrounding lands. His name will be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel during his reign.

III. David took action in order to fulfill the will of God and his promise

A. Fulfilled his promise
28 King David responded, “Call Bathsheba!” So she came back in and stood before the king.
29 And the king repeated his vow: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has rescued me from every danger,
30 your son Solomon will be the next king and will sit on my throne this very day, just as I vowed to you before the Lord, the God of Israel.”
31 Then Bathsheba bowed down with her face to the ground before the king and exclaimed, “May my lord King David live forever!”
32 Then King David ordered, “Call Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.” When they came into the king’s presence,
33 the king said to them, “Take Solomon and my officials down to Gihon Spring. Solomon is to ride on my own mule.
34 There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet are to anoint him king over Israel. Blow the ram’s horn and shout, ‘Long live King Solomon!’
35 Then escort him back here, and he will sit on my throne. He will succeed me as king, for I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and Judah.”
36 “Amen!” Benaiah son of Jehoiada replied. “May the Lord, the God of my lord the king, decree that it happen.
37 And may the Lord be with Solomon as he has been with you, my lord the king, and may he make Solomon’s reign even greater than yours!”
38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and the king’s bodyguard took Solomon down to Gihon Spring, with Solomon riding on King David’s own mule.
39 There Zadok the priest took the flask of olive oil from the sacred tent and anointed Solomon with the oil. Then they sounded the ram’s horn and all the people shouted, “Long live King Solomon!”
40 And all the people followed Solomon into Jerusalem, playing flutes and shouting for joy. The celebration was so joyous and noisy that the earth shook with the sound.
B. Adonijah even recognized it was the will of God for Solomon to be king
15 He replied, “As you know, the kingdom was rightfully mine; all Israel wanted me to be the next king. But the tables were turned, and the kingdom went to my brother instead; for that is the way the Lord wanted it.
Conclusion:
We are called to:
make our family a priority over everything else except our personal relationship with God
to surround ourselves with mature Christians we can seek out advice and prayer from them
to be men of action; to make things happen when we say they are going to happen; men of our word
