Overview

The Book of James is classified with 1 and 2 Peter, 1, 2 and 3 John, and Jude as "catholic" or "general" epistles because they are not addressed to a particular individual or church. Because of its emphasis on common sense Christian living, James has been called the “The Proverbs of the New Testament.” James is more interested in the practice of the Christian faith than the precepts and doctrines of the Christian faith. According to James, faith is real, practical and, most of all; it makes a difference in how you live your life.

Faith makes a difference in:

Ø  How you see yourself.

Ø  How you face trials and how you handle temptation.

Ø  How you respond to the Word of God.

Ø  How to live God’s Word daily.

Ø  How you respond to people, circumstances and situations.

Ø  How you view other people and how you treat other people.

Ø  How you speak to people and how you speak about people.

Ø  How you use your money and influence and how you regard those less fortunate than you.

Ø  How to stay on the path.

Ø  How you handle sickness and other life problems.

The Theme of the Letter of James

The book of James shows the proper "behavior of faith". What you say you believe, must to be shown by how you live. Your faith should result in a life that reflects Godly behavior.

Key Verses: James 1:2-4; 1:19-22; 2:14-17

Key Words:

Ø  Faith, belief (James 1:3, 6; 2:1, 5, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 26; 5:15)

Ø  Works/working (James 1:3-4, 20, 25; 2:14, 17-18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26; 3:13, 16 )

Ø  Rejoicing, joy, cheerful (James 1:2, 9; 2:23; 4:9; 5:13)

Ø  Patience, be patient (James 1:3, 4; 5:7, 8, 11)

Ø  Perfect (James 1:4, 17, 25; 2:22; 3:2)

Unique Characteristics:

Ø  The book of James contains 108 verses with 54 commands, about one for every two verses. Some of the commands begin with "Let" or "Let not." Here are some examples.

"Let no man say when he is tempted, `I am tempted by God'"James1:13

"Let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment" – James 3:1

Ø  There are references or allusions from 22 Old Testament books.

Ø  James referred to many Old Testament characters including Abraham, Rahab, Job, and Elijah as well as the Ten Commandments and the Law of Moses.

Ø  There are at least 20 references to the teachings of Christ as embodied in the Sermon on the Mount.
