Intro to Spiritual Disciplines & Rhythms
What we typically do here at redeemers as we go through books of the Bible. We actually finished 1st Peter about six weeks ago. We finished second Peter just last week. However last summer we took a little bit of a break of doing artifical Mo and we did a summer a Biblical literacy, which I thought was really important for our church and we talked about big topics like God we talked about the Bible we talked about all sorts of areas of Theology and worship Michael Watson came up and shared with us and I really appreciate it. Just a break in the summer to kind of do the topical in the summer because I know it's summer and it's Central Oregon that your one chance to get out for the six weeks. It's warm here, right cuz it'll be snowing again soon. I promise it's been so what we're going to do this summer is we're going to spend time and something that that will call spiritual formation training your soul for godliness. Not everybody likes in this day and age the word spiritual formation. So maybe you can look at it as a spiritual growth, but truly is this idea of being transformed into the image of Christ in order to get in and talk about this is a lot of important things that I first need to Primus with because we're going to look at over the next ten weeks issues like what it means to work and have diligence and how we're being formed and what we do and how were to actually operate in our working with that looks like towards God. We're going to look at rest and what it means to rest and Trust we're going to look at community and presents with one another the body of Christ and commitment. So each one of these will call rhythms of life. Step people were their followers of Jesus or not all have certain rhythms. We're also going to see some disciplines that God is teaching us through those but in order to really understand this this morning we have to first be rooted in who we are in Christ as you certainly aren't going to grow apart from him. The scriptures have all kinds of phrases to describe who we are in Christ. We can read in Romans that we are adopted and talking about our position in Christ. What that means is in Colossians chapter 1 it says that we were alienated from Christ were alienated from God but he has brought us into himself. He has made us airs, his sons his daughters. We are in Jesus and that's our position. Weird phrases that say weren't Justified and forgiving which talk about the grace that's been given to us that the guilt that we felt has been dealt with through Jesus at the shame that our sin cast upon us has been Cast Away the scriptures declare that you are righteous when we wonder if we're actually even good enough. You know those Dark Nights of the Soul when we consider our lives and maybe even the wake of Destruction that's been left behind us wondering how can I atone? How can I make right the wrongs that I've done the scriptures tell us that we are righteous in Christ that he is enough and tells us that were the Beloved and that were accepted in Christ two of the deepest longings of any heart that beats is for acceptance belonging and wondering how can I be made right? And what we've done is we've looked over 1st Peter and 2nd Peter is really establish that in Christ. This is who we are but apart from Christ. You cannot somehow worker weasel your way into these positions, but it's a work that God has done in savings and calling us and making us his own but here's the issue. He's come to a position where maybe you go. I believe that I receive that but now what? Now what? I just go to church and sing songs on Sunday. Do I just have this corner of my life where I get to be spiritual and now little bit religious and I get to go and tell people about this little corner of my life when actually in all reality with the scriptures declare about as is not just a Sunday moment, but his radical life-change that reorders us from top to bottom makes us completely new and changes even the very most inner desires and I switched in results and life change. We come to this question of now what and all over 2nd Peter we dealt with some of the theology behind what this looks like an over the next ten weeks this summer. We're going to deal with the Practical Miss of how this plays out in our lives and why it's important and I want to share with you in 2nd Timothy 2:15. It says do your best to present yourself to God as one approved a worker who has no need to be ashamed rightly handling the word as you can recall back if you were here and if you were not go look at 2nd Peter and go read verses 1 through 3. We noticed that there is a passive and active tent that's happening in 2nd Peter 1 through 3. And actually there is this active 10th of God who is shaving and it is man who is receiving. It is something God has done and it is something that we received but now How old is saying is do your best? And really in today's Christianity there seems to be such an adversity. There's not this desire to actually do anything because we're so scared that I might come across as legalism.
My Bible to pray that somebody might come up to me and be like, oh man, you're doing something to earn God's favor. There is no need to do that. Just because of about those things. and what we can end up doing it, maybe you've experienced this read some books about this heard these kinds of things top before or maybe you've been on the other end of this pendulum that swings and says,
Did the Baptist wear tie I love my doctor's friends were laughing right now Pastor that are have three. Nice going to tell me how to get my life in order and I'm not knocking Baptist so into a Baptist University, it's totally cool. It's totally fine. But then what we begin to do is begin to realign are alive with the set of rules that we think will then or in the favor of God and man relationship like that just stinks. Doesn't it ever been a relationship? We are constantly trying to earn the favor of the person across from you. Maybe it's with your children. Maybe it's in a marriage. Maybe it's in a friendship and you're constantly having to do do do Duke and have you ever felt that with God. Sure have I felt at times I need to maintain and achieve the status. I felt guilty if I said I didn't read my Bible today cuz I'm sitting in my equip group in. These guys are looking at me as their Pastor terrible rules and regulations. It's burst out of a love for God. But listen. Paul says do your best. How about in 2nd Timothy 3:10 you however he's talking to Timothy have followed my teaching you've done something my conduct my aim in life my faith my patience my love my steadfastness Paul writing to Timothy. So you aren't walking in these things Colossians 3:2 set your mind on things above 1st Peter 1:13 prepare your minds for Action 2nd Peter 1:5 for this very reason make every effort to supplement to your faith 1st. Timothy 4 7 train yourself for godliness.
Listen, absolutely one hundred percent salvation is the free gift of God. It is the work of God that he is done in you that you received that you did not earn that you did not get because you were being good at something that God has done and taking you from what the scriptures talk about a natural man dead in your trespasses and sins and in the spirit of God is coming live in your heart and it's truly made you a spiritual man not in the sense of the word is used to pop culture today not in the Hollywood use of the term, but now you have the very spirit of God dwelling inside of you. This is what God has done in you and from that new position. You are walking out what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ is active and saving you You receive that gift. Then listen Christ is active and growing you because apart from Jesus Grove does not have knowing that is made possible by Jesus as we saw on 2nd Peter more than leaning into the things of God in order to even grow. Follow after what God has said, so I want to pose a question this morning. What is 4 mean your soul? What is 4 mean your spiritual life? Or we can phrase it like this. If you like this turn better, what does spiritual growth even look like we did a ruler out. Can we measure it?
How do we even tell what's going on? And I want to show that something is forming you something is shaping you something that you are taking it affect an impact your thinking. Something that you're taking in tells you how to view the world today tells you how to view marriage today tells you how to view sexuality today tells you how to do friendships today tells you how to view money today. You can go down the list there are things coming out of good or bad. But by the very nature of Being Human Beings, we are going to be conformed to something pre-fall mean in the image of God to reflect the glory of God post falsing. We don't need you God then what are we doing? We're taking on and reflecting all this evil and wickedness that exist in the world today and you can see it and how it is being played out in culture with hard power and soft power and War and murder. with killing hatred we're being conformed to something listen to Romans 12:1 through to as many of you probably are familiar with this verse I appeal to you therefore Brothers by the mercies of God present your bodies as living sacrifices. Holy and acceptable to God. First of all, what are we doing in that Romans is written to Christians. And there is a God who has saved us and Paul is riding to these Christians here in Romans from having talked about by faith. You are saved not of works that it was faith that justified Abraham is believe in this God and it's just I want you to be what giving yourselves to God. He says do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that by testing you may discern. What is the will of God what is good acceptable and perfect. Here's what I need you to hear in the scripture. You can't you can't just renew your mind on your own. Can't you can try? But the way to renew our mind if you were here last week, this is going to ring a bell and definitely tie-in as to take the lies the world speaks about you and replace them with the truth that God speaks about you. However, if you do not know the truth of God would have speaks about you. How on Earth are you going to renew your mind the things of God? How are you even going to go with the scripture say about you if you don't spend time in them, or if you don't spend time in community with other believers because really that's when the scriptures become so powerful. My like I can be sitting there reading them an event discussing them with a friend and they bring up a Bursar they say this is what's going on in my life and how the supplies and then Community blinders are removed and I begin to speak the truth of God into my life. But in the last we know it we cannot take hold of it and be renewed in our minds.
There's a massive battle that is going on and we sure this there is the way to the good life and buy the good life. I don't mean your best life that whole idea is to have the best like no I'm talking about the good life is a philosophy that says here is how to achieve righteousness. Here's how to be okay. Here's how to have with the Jewish scriptures that say shalom ultimate. Peace. In the world is telling you this is how you go about it. and then if you look at Jesus he is completely contrary the world says the way up is move up the financial ladder move up the power ladder move up the Friendship ladder. Use people to get whatever it is. You want Jesus as the Way Up Is Down you want to become great become a servant of all esteem others above yourself. Jesus is the way the truth the life or being conformed to his image and there are two options here that Paula same you a Christian. If you are a Christian as he's riding to Believers in Romans says you are either going to be conformed to this world. Truly by what you take in our you're going to be transforms. You're either going to be conformed a really what I would say d formed into the image of the world in Genesis. It talks about it as the way of the serpent in Revelation the way of the Beast really the way that is the opposite of what God is we're going to be deformed into the image of the world ever going to be transformed into the image of Christ by the renewing of our minds Romans. 8:5 38 says for those who live according to the flesh set their mind on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit set their minds on the things of the spirit. What is it the mind on the flesh is death, but this it the mind and the spirit of life in peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God for does not submit to God's law and eat it, Not those who are in the flesh cannot please God set our mind on the flash. Is that set her mind on the spirit is life?
Take a moment. Think about the craziness of life. Probably doesn't take long. Do I stack the list right? You just look at last week. Here's the thing. We don't have a lot of control over a lot of things in life. Do we I don't have a lot of control over body ailments. That might come my way. I don't have a lot of control if I go out into the parking lot and turn right there on 218th Street or whatever. It is in another car hits me. I don't have control over my children will you know relatively speaking we have some saying this in our house, but over their ability do you want to tell lies or not of what they're going to do when they grow up? I don't have control over my wife in that sense of making sure everything gets done how I want it to be done. No, but what is one thing you do have control over your mind? your mind train your mind for godliness. Exercise your mind for calling us where we often attacked. What does it say in Ephesians chapter 6 talking about fiery darts that hit what the mine where does every deceptive thing begin and your mind a deceptive idea that leads to a disorder desire right begins in the mind. I'm going to reject God I'm going to do this thing. I'm going to harm that person to begins in the mind. If he comes this disorder desired then what happens in society at large if he comes back normal eyes. Everybody thinks that it's just all right what we're doing as a culture today. And here we're being told over and over again to guard your mind. Watch what you think and what you take in your mind as a Christian is come alive to the things of God to think on the things of God because the best thing the enemy can do in bringing you down as to cause you to be suspicious Abu God is do we not recall Genesis. Did God not say you could eat of every tree in the garden Retreat except that one. Oh God is withholding something from you. That is suspicions implanted in the mind of Adam and Eve.
and then the fallout's Church Guard your mind. We live in a day and age for information is rampid. It's an addiction we can get any and every kind of news real or fake at anytime. We would like we can back up any and every point we truly want to add the tip of our fingertips just
And here we're told to guard our minds. Humans were doing all kinds of things to shape and form Our Lives whether you know it or not, but you read fiction or nonfiction. What you watch what you take in who you hang out with where you go to church if you do go to church where you live where you work? And what you do with your free time all of these things going to shaping who you are what you think and what you believe about the world around you. I think sometimes there's something in each and every person who's proud like maybe I came to all of these great conclusions on my own. I'm just such a free thinker. Good luck with that. I'm telling you something has formed your thoughts your experiences your upbringing. Whatever you continue to read and where were you can turn to learn from its all speaking into you and that's not a bad thing. It's just a reality and how we were actually made. It's not a warning. Don't read any more news. Don't watch any more movies. Don't listen to that kind of music. Don't read those books. But you're bringing awareness. But everything we take in affecting us. teal incense one of the greatest tactics of what the Enemy At Large would love to do to the Evangelical Church in the west is to get the simulator and looking like the rest of the world. It's coming through in legislator is coming through in trying to make rules and laws and what can and can't be said and how we have to talk and feel the things we actually can say about certain issues and culture today. And the whole goal is to adjust us to look so much like vulture. The God's word, but it does not fit into contemporary culture is just passed off. Enemy does not want us to be on guard. What you see God and calling you and making you his own does not allow for us to be fully assimilated with the rest of the world. What happened in Genesis chapter 12 when God called Abraham. He said I'm going to make you a people of my phone. My presence is going to go with you. Do you know that it's the very presence of God that made Abraham to stink to everyone else around him. Abraham was a sinner like every other leader and King but that day he took on Hagar's another bride birth and illegitimate child out of that even cast her aside as if she was nothing totally disregarding her that's what the kings of that Dayton was fully accepted doubted God. He made treaties that he shouldn't have made you in places. He shouldn't have went or what made him distinct. Wasn't necessarily all of his actions because his faith trust and belief in God, we begin to mold and shape him and make him into a man that followed and serve God and if you watch the progression of Abraham, he was growing in the things of God. How about Moses? We talked about his story a man that was called by God. He knew that he had his role to play. He kills an Egyptian the runs off into the Wilderness Resort hanging out 40 years. I can't speak. I'm not I'm not I'm not your guy. God must think he had some sort of us. Well, he delivers the people through the hand of God and he's there in the wilderness and they sin horribly. Is it again to dance wildly around the idol that they met and they're sacrificing and giving to God and God said to Abraham next season of Moses. Hey, why don't you just go ahead and go into the land without me and his response is classic. If you don't go with us, who are we you make us distinct you make a distinct. God makes us distinct Peter cause the church a holy nation a royal priesthood essentially a distinct people the uniqueness of the Church of the Holy Spirit indwells each and every believer who makes up the body of Christ. He's at the very center and it's the presence of God with his people that makes us distinct but book the presence of God always impacts us in a very drastic way. She got some nice that we miss. We love to sing about the presence of God. We want to feel good about the presence of God, but do you know the presence of got to actually transform Our Lives? That it causes us to be so countercultural to the world and its systems because we're being transformed not conformed everything in this world is trying to conform you to its rhythms to its disciplines to its way of life 2 how it's going to have the good life and it's a philosophy that the world portrays of this is how to live it up. This is how to be and yet The Holy Spirit changing us transforming us causing us to live incredibly countercultural to the world around us. That's what Paul is preaching Peter is preaching they preached Jesus and invited them into the community of God. And in those communities people are being transformed for being encouraged by one another being transformed into the image of Christ. So what do we do not everything in the world coming at you is good. Not everything that the world gives us either is bad as it's not to talk to some of you about this on different levels on some things. So I just want to walk through some ideas on what does it look like to be transformed Christ what is being conformed the world how to respond to these things and I didn't come up with this. I stole this from a smarter mind than mine. But this one man is his preaching said you can receive what culture gives you at face value and just take it in. You can reject what culture gives us and just simply say we have nothing to do with it or you can redeem what culture gives us and we can turn it for God's good. What does that mean? What does that look like? You have to outright reject any form as a follower of Jesus idolatry sexual immorality. We see things in the scripture say those are things that we should never as followers of Jesus receive. Yeah, that seems like it should be obvious answer but look at the world around us. Is it obvious people are doing this stuff all over the place? Why? Ruth Rohn Tower and willing to trample other over others to get what they want. because I Listen, when something comes our way, we have to look at it and there are some thing as Christians wear to take bold stances on and say we reject that. We just do you can receive something. I receive some wonderful Mexican food last week that's culture. Right? That's something that we don't culture wheel drive vehicles and we drive cars and we receive that all these things that make up culture and Society there are things I mean, my family has televisions in our house. We're not to kill your TV kind of family and we got for young kids. I don't know. That's my wife and I would do so for maybe end up with more kids. So We can edit that one out. All right.
You guys you can.
Or there are things that we have to redeem for God's purposes. Let me give you a free popcorn work. Some of us hate and loathe work every kind all kinds any kind work is the worst. So we reject work. Work was given to us by God before the fall now some of us receive work and works identity. Work is always think of work is what makes us who we are work is what makes me a man work. So makes me an independent woman work is what gives me everything I feel and need in this life. And now we are overused works not only received it would take it to such a degree that ought not to have gone and it becomes the defining point of who we are ancient religion. They thought that the gods got lazy and tired so they murdered their own share this a while ago and they what made man to do the work for them. That's where that idea that work is bad comes from
Do you think work is all there is to life Your Cheatin identity through work. That is not good work is a necessary evil. That's not what the Bible says. I want to explore a Biblical view of what work is next week. We can learn through that. So what do we do with work we taken from God. We reject the things that culture says about it and we put the right disciplines behind at the teacher something about God. Here's another one Facebook right good or evil. So we just put you down the room. Should we draw lines? Should we as Christians receive it rejected or redeem it will you can certainly reject it if that's where you get all your theology all your politics. You're in trouble. I'm just going to tell you that now. Okay, probably some things on their you ought to reject. if you receive everything that comes your way in that you were going to be hurting so so you've redeemed if you're going to use Do you understand that there is an ability for purpose and I don't mean that you have to post a verse every week, please it's not that it would bring glory to God. Receive reject redeemed conform to the world transformed in Christ Image. These influences are unavoidable. So you going to be deform to The Way of the World are transform to Christ spirits of training growing and godliness transfer me to Christ. I want to read 1st Timothy 4 7 through 12 rather train yourself for godliness for a bodily training is of some value as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. Did you hear that training yourself in godliness is not a waste of time. Why do you treat it like a waste of time? Why does reading our Bible just look like the biggest waste of that morning? And we must have rushed out of the house and do something else. Why does time and prayer feel like nothing's actually happening. Those are Lies by the enemy spoken to see that it's not adding a single ounce or think to your life would actually it is diving with the Saints on a Sunday. I know it's beautiful out and it's going to be hot this afternoon. But God is doing some transforming work in hearts and lies every single time. We gather why then do we have such a Negative view on this stuff? We're bored. We over it we done with it. You seem this hold something valuable not only to this life but to the life to come. Oh my goodness. That is so heavy and so wavy There's a train and godliness. God is doing something in us now and in the future, he said the saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance for this end. We toil and stride because we have our hopes that on the Living God who is the savior of all people especially those who believe he says I am not backing down from this point. Toil and godliness, please do not go the way of antinomianism which is very passive you that I'm just shaved and I can go lived you Ash. However, I want I can be actually Contra to the strip just for me. We're home boys. We're good. Yuma dog, no No, that's not what this says. It says to toil in these things to strive after these things the same kind of language we hear that would be at work and to do the other things
this is written to Believers. I want to point out proverbs 4. I want to flip over there you can I'm going to look at 20 through 24 my son get 10 up to my words incline your ear to my sayings, but they're not escaped from your side. Keep them within your heart. Where you going to keep them in your heart and your hearts. For their life to those who find them and healing to all their flesh keep your heart with all vigilance for from it flows the Springs of Life put away from your crooked speech and put devious talk from your hearts. There's this idea here of what we put into our hearts matters. Put the word of God in our hearts. The exhortation to watch over your heart for from that flows the Springs of Life. For some reason we've been convinced that if we actually believe the stuff that we're falling further away from progression Society in all reality. We're going closer to the guy who designed made and created it there for Action walking and what it truly means to be human. You want to know what it truly means to be human? Follow after the things of God in Mark 7:15 and verses 20 through 23. Jesus says this the things proceedeth out of the mouth are that with the files the man? From 4 from within sorry out of the heart of man foresees evil thoughts acts of sexual morality thefts murders adultery and deeds of covetousness wickedness as well as to see sensuality EnV slander pride and foolishness in Luke chapter 6, he's on the same engine. I gather figs from Thorn bushes, but he says the good man of the good Treasure of his heart brings forth. What is good and evil man's of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart? Master one more time. I want to drill then what the hell's your heart? Be honest. BJ dream about
but if he's going to sell you and satisfy you. Can I can so easily by in so many of the other billboard Aztecs thoughts that save these are the things that will fulfill and satisfy you and it's actually deformed my soul to things of this world. I'm not saying don't enjoy the wonderful beautiful things of this world. James says every good and perfect gift comes from the father above the height that you took the car that you got there in the money that you spent. Those are all wonderful glorious kind generous gifts from God above enjoy them, please Go have friendship good food something good to drink and enjoy one another. Please understand it comes from knowing who God is. Famous quote from Dallas Willard and he said spiritual formation in the tradition of Jesus Christ is the process of transformation of the innermost dimension of the human being the heart which is the same as the spirit or well spiritual formation in the tradition of Jesus is the process of transformation. This is what God is doing in us. He's transforming us 1st Peter 1 4 through 7 is right. Well as Romans 5, we don't have time one through five talk about this keep your heart. How does this help lay out. Give me 5 minutes and will close out here in this morning.
We all have life rhythms. Eats and sleep we work. We have Leisure and rest time we have play we all have these rhythms that we partake in every part of life. And even if we look at creation God created the world in such a way that there's Rhythm built into it and it's not just some poetic rhythm that's written in Genesis 1 but there's this idea that God did what he created the day and he separated from the night. He created there he worked and then he rest. All right. So there's this Rhythm that's created into the fabric of creation, which God has intertwined and plan for every single person rhythms are strong regular repeated patterns of movement. The things that we regularly do to shape us some of you have rhythms where you get up at 5 a.m. And you workout you sacrifice sleep for Fitness your rhythms of when you spend family time your rhythms of when you go on date night you have rhythms of when you have community and friendship your Sunday rhythms of coming to church and everything we're doing we're giving up something else to do the thing that's most valuable to us. Correct you guys value Church, even when it's sunny outside, so you give up sleeping in And brunch and playing at the park to be here on Sunday to pour into your spiritual health and well-being because you value that more than something else that is even could all have rhythms. Everyday, we're carving up time for what is important to us is God a priority in your rhythms. Not only that we all have disciplines. Not the act of disciplining someone but practices that we do train to spiritual discipline. I'm going to go on a limb resting is a spiritual discipline. Is there a bunch of control freaks, aren't we?
How we are gen risk is a discipline and so our rhythms and disciplines over the next ten weeks are going to kiss one another they're going to see each other. We're going to see how they actually play out in our relies as we learn to trust God as we learn to be present as we learn. For God's they're teaching us a portent things. We're not to be isolated for delivering presents with one another that would have worked diligently even if Adam and Eve were called to do in the garden. It would have trust in God and that we're not to Simply had the suspicion surrounding him never to care for one another these are disciplines. And what Ezra said in Ezra 7:10 for Ezra and set his heart to study the law of the Lord and to do it at each it for a statute and rules in Israel. Tune me out to this point, please. Listen, obey the commands of God. It's not legalism legalism is obey to get God obedience is because God has done something in you you are received, right? So so because you are received because God loves you you obey and follow after him rather than I'm obeying and following after him in order to get him. Those are two radically different thought processes because I know that I'm loved by God and he cares for me. I'm going to walk and what he has called me to walk in and so whenever we hear the law of God in the Old Testament all the scope not for me, I don't have anything to do with what God talking about in there and hopefully next summer. We do the Ten Commandments kind of on my list of things. I want to teach who we have this adversity. Turn the words the law of God get what is David saying the songs I Delight in the law of God who takes the light why well, here's my best shot. Here in good old Redmond, Oregon. We all love the Second Amendment, correct? Hey men couple guns going to go off in this church. Maybe don't don't call anybody got to see cops here. I'm sure we love it. I know Redman. Okay, that's cool. I got a safe. I get it. The bunch of fans here get you post about it you talk about it. Why you go home in like kisses and hugs its and hold close to that know you love the Second Amendment because what it represents, what does it represent America right Merica? Alright Freedom you love what it represents about this. Country the freedoms that we have that you treasure and that you value as an American citizen. the law of God represents God You thought about that it represents his who he was so Progressive for that date the way in which they were to treat other nations taken the stranger and the pilgrim to love those even boom work hurting them. It was so far beyond any other moral code that have been written to that date and God Blocked it down and it represent God. That's why David love the law. It wasn't because Pierce's list of things I better do and then God will love me. I know he loved it because of what actually represent it. the Lamb of God at the place of safety He said it was perfect right working in the soul. He wanted to live and walk after it cuz he had a walk with God. The New Covenant has the law of God written on our hearts My Hope Is that we build rhythms around who got his why Andy Crouch and culture making for human beings not human machines. We need rest and you need rest that is something God has called you to your human beings. You need to play you need to spend time with one another you need to take in the word of God. You need to have Solitude not isolation because it'll form you spiritually.
