2 John chapter 6

reverse number 35

We're back to our study here again. As I said this 6 chapter. Which is a chapter of 71 verses.

And like we've been talking about though this chapter has a lot of moving Parts. Scott Miracles was lot going on. The primary issue is the reality of false disciples. We see some of them in fact many of them and in the context of where we are walk away from Jesus at the very end of this chapter.

These are disciples. These are Learners. These are students of Jesus who were following Jesus for some time and then they they made the decision to walk away from him.

As we've been working our way through these versus what we've done is you remember we following an outline all the way through of the characteristics of false disciples. We saw first are attracted by the crowd. The bigger the crowd the more interest that they have second there. They're fascinated by the promise of the supernatural. And it's so funny that that's true today even with those who promised the supernatural but then can't deliver it. Barely, there are only interested in the Earthly benefits. Remember, they tried to take Jesus by force after he fed them in and make him a king so that they could feed he could be feeding them and healing them on a daily basis. But they had no interest particularly in him.

They did have an interest in what he could provide remember. Forte we saw how Paul's disciples have no interest in true genuine worship. Now remember when he walked on water earlier in this chapter. What was the immediate response of the disciples in the boat while his true disciples immediately declared him to be the Son of God that they worship Him. Diply, we saw how false disciples seek personal Prosperity just a little Nuance on what we saw earlier and and those people that experience that Miracle feeding of the 25000 member they followed Jesus back across the lake for one reason and one reason only they wanted to be fed again. Sonny told them notice there in verse 27 of this 6 chapter. Do not work for the food which perishes.

Stop chasing me all around this Lake just to get another meal. Instead verse 27 continues sheet for the food which indoors to eternal life, which the son of man will give to you for on him. The father. God has set his seal. And then last time we looked at the six point. Boss disciples make demands on God. They see God as a bank. They see God as a repository for all that they want in this Earthly temporal world and and all they really want to know is what is the mechanism to get from God what I want? Remember what they asked Jesus there in verse 28. Every 28 days at what shall we do? So that we may work the works of God. They just they wanted his power. How can we do what you do Jesus give us that power. Then we can make our own food, right? Was Jesus response verse 29? No? This is the work of God. That you believe in him who he has sent.

Jesus is letting you know look the only work of God that you're going to be able to participate in is to believe and yes, that is a work of God. That's what I said. Okay. If you're not going to give us the power verse 30. What vein do you do for a sign so that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform late already seen him feed 25,000 what they're really saying is if you're not going to give us the power to do it ourselves. Then what we need you to do is another miracle and we need to do keep on doing those Miracles and keep on doing them and keep them coming. I keep feeding us to him will believe in you. So the false followers are the shallow. And the selfish and they continue to make demands on Jesus there Seekers of personal satisfaction only and they are demanding that Jesus responds to them. Now. That's the opposite of course of a true disciple Falls disciples think that God exists to do what they want for them. True disciples understand that the opposite is true, right? True Believers understand what it means to confess Jesus as Lord.

What a person. Confesses Jesus as Lord in Saving Faith. Do you realize that that is the the First Act of the recognition of his Divine dominion over all things including every area and aspect of your life.

When you can bass. Jesus is Lord saving Lee at that moment. You give up your sovereignty over your life.

You were the Sovereign in your own life where you not before saving faith?

You were pushing your own buttons you or charting your own course, but all of that changes. When you come to Christ on his terms.

Never again in the life of a true disciple in the big picture of Life Is Life about what you want. It all becomes about what he wants Because he's the king. And we are the servants. True or false disciples have a completely selfish preoccupation that causes them to view God as a dispenser of all the Earthly Temple things that they want out of life and all again. As I said they're looking for is what are the mechanisms to get God to do that for me?

All of that brings us to number seven. False disciples do not find their desires fulfilled In Christ Alone back in verse 27 again. Look at it again. Do not work for the food which parish is Jesus says from the food which indoors to eternal life, which the son of man will give to you.

He says right there that he will give it to them.

Ben 10 verse 35 we find out what the it is Jesus said in verse 35. Jesus said to them I am the bread of life.

he saying I will give myself.

Going to get even more explicit later when he says You Must Eat My Flesh and drink my blood. That really raised some eyebrows.

But the point here is that Jesus is the sole satisfying bread of life that he is willing to give. before the true disciple

that's everything.

Christ and Christ Alone his person. His work is everything that the true disciple needs?

It is. the primary satisfaction of the true disciple Paul said what? Oh that I may what know him.

Paul also said when I met Christ everything else was manure. remember He considered everything that he had ever learned or achieved or gained and his very illustrious religious career. Dawn when he came to Christ

He said what for me to live is Christ. And to die is gain. I'm crucified with Christ. Nevertheless. I live yet not I but Christ lives in me and a true disciple knows like Paul that whether you had a little or whether you have a lot. Materially speaking in this Earthly life your contentment in this life is found in Christ and Christ alone and everything Earthly. In the big picture is really irrelevant.

when compared to Christ

He's the pearl of great price. He the man in that Parable whip memory went and sold all that. He had to buy it and the Pearl in the parable is Christ. the true disciple lives out his life ever learning more deeply the Supreme value of Christ as he studies Christ as he studies Christ word and he is willing if necessary to sell off to have Christ.

And him are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge Right In Christ Alone, we find Redemption and wisdom and righteousness. spiritual blessings in the Heavenly places

true disciples understand that there is nothing that this world has to offer. That can compare. with Union with Christ

Now boss disciples do not understand this. That's why Christ Alone is not the message of today's man centered preaching Jesus. But they only use his name as a means to an end to fulfill the Earthly Temple man-centered desires of the hearers.

Christ is not what it sold today for the people because Falls disciples. They do not look at the glories of Christ and fine in him all that they ever want.

a true disciples do

the true disciple is more than content in Christ alone just to to belong in Christ. Just with the thought of being promised future Glory by Christ to be counted as righteous with the righteousness of Christ. The true disciple looks at everything he has in this world and nothing compare to Christ and and and would be willing if necessary if necessary to give all of it up if it meant continuing to be in Christ

The phone's disciple just want some more of what he's already got. From Jesus more money more stuff or things.

Eternal life is a free gift already purchased by Christ. But in a sense it is costly. Because you will be willing to sell everything. to gain him

that was not a deal that the Rich Young Ruler was willing to make was it. He wanted to hang onto his money. He wanted Jesus if Jesus gave me more of what he already loved or even if he didn't have to part with what he already had. That's not the deal.

The true disciple says I will forsake everything that may not be necessary. But the true disciple will be willing if necessary.

The true disciple denies himself takes up his cross even if he's if he's facing death, why is investors don't put all their money into one single investment, but you know what? That's what Christians do. That's what believers do we put everything into one investment? And that's Christ. He is our only hope in this life and in the next. He is all of our hope now you can spot a false disciple by the preoccupation of that disciple with what Jesus gives. You can spot a true disciple by the preoccupation of that true disciple with who Jesus is.

my next in verse 36 that day this group had no real interest in Jesus himself. He says in verse 36 look there, but I said to you. What you have seen me this is full disclosure.

You have seen me with your own eyes.

This is more than faith without sight. This is site. I've seen the Miracles they seen everything.

You just participated in America. with a feeding You have seen me in verse 36 he says and yet what? you do not believe He saw his miracles. They heard his words. And they still did not believe you know, what this is. This is the absolute hardness of the natural human heart. They have no interest in him. They only want what he can provide and that day they want more bread.

But I want more fish.

They want the power they want the provision. But they don't want him.

And let me tell you something. As we noted this several sermons back. This is a powerful blow to Jesus. if you think about how we feel when we witness to somebody or we've discipled somebody and then that person reject Christ and just walks away completely. Think about how you feel that's happened to you.

How do you think that made Jesus feel?

This is farther than any beyond anything that we can experience because not only is this Jesus that were talking about but I think think about the contacts. He's not just been out there witnessing. He's been out there doing these miracles in Galilee every single day for a long time around a year up to this point and still most of this group does not believe. Hannah whitall Smith the clear evidence

They are not really interested in what Jesus is really offering.

now much of today's evangelism at this point with just do what adjust the message to start offering the people what they want which is of course a tragedy in our country in the world.

But how does Jesus handle this rejection? I want you to remember.

This is Jesus. in his incarnation Yes, he is God in human flesh 100% but also remember this he is 100% human.

And this definitely in his Humanity affects him this rejection.

And and these next verses that we're fixing to get into starting and verse 37. These are all verses that you'd all know very well.

What we have here is some of the clearest biblical proof for reformed theology. That's found anywhere in the Bible.

What you really need to grasp? These verses in context of what has led up to them.

Tell me, describes what starts their inverse 36/37 as kind of a change in the conversation that Jesus is having with his people. This is kind of like Jesus just a talking to yourself moment.

Whatever. I heard what Jason was saying. Yes, but really?

He's speaking in a very sorrowful way. Scott a defensive These are words right here that you're very familiar with that are helping Jesus Jesus just to keep his balance in life of the extreme rejection that he is experiencing from all these people.

Remember in his Humanity tempted in all points as our we went without saying but in his Humanity with all that he offered. With that kind of rejection from that many people it it just had to be a very painful moment in his life.

now

How does he react? verse 37

all that the father gives me will come to me.

Wow.

What's he doing here?

He's leaning hard. on Devine election That's what we're going to continue to see him do.

Is there a what you kind of have to do?

He's doing what we can do. In the same kind of circumstance at the end of the day.

in the big picture

Why don't they come?

Why don't they just accept Christ? I'm giving them the Glorious gospel. Why don't they believe why don't they react? It's inescapable.

At the end of the day we too. In response to that Rest In The Sovereign purpose of God, don't we?

These versus here in John 6 are unmistakably dealing with Divine Sovereign election Sovereign calling. Jesus knows that no human being could ever possibly come to him unless the father draws him. He says here looking verse 37 all that the father gives to me look. Will come to me every one of them. And the one who comes to me. I certainly will certainly not cast out now.

That is just so clear. It leaves no wiggle room for anybody not given by the father. Does it not?

And all notice very carefully everyone that is given by the father to the sun will come every one of them guaranteed.

And Jesus asked just to make sure that you get it. The ones who come he will certainly not cast out verse 38. For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me so as we know he always does the father's will and what is the Father's will in this context in which he is speaking will go to the next verse in verse 39. This is the will of him who sent me that all he has given me I lose nothing but raise it up on the last day. Wow. This is his response. All that the father gives the sun will come every single one of them. He will never cast them out and it is the Father's way. It'll of that same group given by the father to the son that Jesus lose none of them. And in fact, he's going to raise every single one of them up on the last day.

Jesus is making very clear. this massive overwhelming doctrine of God choosing Sovereign election in Salvation that no one is ever going to believe we're fixing to see unless the father decides that they must believe and everyone that he decides will absolutely most certainly believe. He's going to continue to make this point same conversation verse 44. No one can that's ability right there. No one can come to me unless the father who sent me draws him and then in 65 versus 65 and he was saying for this reason I said to you that no one can die again that's ability come to me unless it's been granted by the father.

How in the world? You can come away from this section of John 6. And not concede to the reality of the doctrines of Grace. Is a mystery to me.

I guess it's like Steve Lawson says it's not hard to understand. It's just hard to swallow. And I get that I mean I do I get why it's hard to swallow for people. Let's go back to the context in which Jesus said these words again in and his Humanity. It had to be crushing for him that he has just demonstrated his deity in the validity of his message really for over a year now and got to lie and steal. All these people will not believe in who he is.

Show immediately at that point where does he go for Comfort? Where does he go to get his equilibrium? Where does he go to find his balance arrest in the father's will he rest in the father's Choice arrest in the father's calling of Sinners to Salvation.

Is that not where you go?

When you think about those who are closest to you who Jess will not have anything to do with Jesus. I don't know about you, but I have to go to the big picture all the time in my mind. with folks and I'm close to

In the 10th chapter of John there's a similar tax. Once again right here in this text. Jesus is facing rejection and inverses 26 to 29. How did Jesus respond to people rejecting him verse 26, but you do not believe why because you are not of my sheep. What's sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me and I give eternal life to them and they will never perish and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My father who is giving them to me is greater than all and no one is able to snatch them out of the father's hand same scenario. You don't believe

then again those who are the fathers every one of them were given to me. They become my sheet. I know sheet most certainly will hear they most certainly will believe and I will receive them and I will keep them and no one can ever snatch them away from me and no one can ever snatch them away from the father not possible.

What a confidence Jesus has in Divine Sovereign election.

Now back to John 6. very next verse Verse 40 you ready for your head to spin around little bit? For this is the will of my father. What everyone do the holes the son and believes in him will have eternal life and I myself a raise him up on the way. It is the great apparent Paradox here. We have the two sides of this Everlasting discussion about Divine sovereignty and the responsibility of man versus 3837 39th. The father gives the father with his all his plan verse 40 Jesus looks at the other side says everyone who believes

There's never any effort whatsoever to explain the mystery of this great reality is there. Whosoever will may come chosen before the foundation of the world both in the Bible. I will raise all up that the father gives me but guess what? I also raised up everyone that believes.

We should take great comfort in the fact that not even Jesus explains the middle ground there. He does not look for some kind of bridge between those two very challenging realities. Does he? switch on the bottom line for us in this text is they didn't believe and what does Jesus say over and over and over and over and over he who believes has eternal life.

You don't believe but then again. No, one can believe unless the father draws him. Show me where I can go to no other place then right where Jesus is right here and have you find comfort in both realities and know that they're cleared of God? Even though they may not be clear to you and to me. Which is a good indication that you're not God and I'm not God and that's really important for us to know right?

So here are false disciples who do not believe they're drawn by the crowd. They're fascinated by the supernatural. They think only of Earthly things they have no desire for personal worship. They seek personal Prosperity. They see God as a bank. They want to make demands on him. They have no interest really in Christ. And it's kind of superficiality is really easily delusion and led astray and easily influence. And so guess what happens right at this point in the text? the Jews jump in the Jewish leaders at South John refers to the Jewish leaders all the time as the Jews and these are the Jewish leaders in the synagogue. Don't you realize all this is happening in the synagogue in Capernaum. We find that out later in verse 59. That's what that's what it's setting is here. What inside the synagogue verse 41 there for the Jews were grumbling.

The word for grumbling here means to murmur. It's there. They're kind of speaking privately and their grumbling under their breath about Jesus and he hears a mumbling along and what are they mumbling about? Play says next because he said I am the bread that came down from heaven.

so in that phrase, of course, he's reinforcing again is Incarnation verse 42 they were saying Is this not Jesus the son of Joseph Prince father and mother we know how does he now say I have come down out of heaven? Let me tell you what that is mockery.

test ridicule they're over there murmuring are laughing at Jesus. for making this claim Annette Joseph boy Nazareth

first 43

Jesus answered and said do not Grumble among yourself. Now is a sidebar just a little side bar. Can you imagine? when those men in that scene died. And they were instantly transported to full reality in the presence of God.

That they play back that scene. laughing at Jesus with absolute horror I probably still thinking about it right now.

Now in the context of the situation here, what are they grumbling about? What Jesus had shattered their hope of free food and Miracle Healthcare and get rid of the Romans and easy life. He doesn't shatter doll that they would have made great social gospel Warrior people who just want to fix the world a little better on the surface. Listen on that subject. I'm all for helping people. I really am. I really am for providing help for the Community Medical Care food Social Services. I think is a great thing for society when churches or engage in those kind of Ministries, but doing those things is not the message of the Gospel.

What's the message that everyone will accept in the world? Absolutely. Oh look out right that churches. They gave 5,000 pounds of food out into the community. They're going to like us Christians if we get about money and food for the for the poor that they're going to like us if we do social welfare type things in the community and course, I just part of being human and that's very good it is and it's right but That's not the gospel.

If we had a big church, I'd love to do all those things.

What if we did? Do all those kind of things? Along with those things being done. The gospel would have to be pre-eminent.

What's the point? It would have to be clearly and accurately made known in every instance of that kind of Social Ministry because it's the gospel that we are called to preach not just helping people with their Earthly temporal needs.

Any organization can do that in many do that are not Christian.

Very clearly here in our text. Jesus was not interested in that kind of ministry. Right here where we are. Jesus is communicating to these people. Guess what I could keep on feeding you but I'm done.

I could keep on healing you, but I'm done here.

Because he knew.

Where is jacking? They had no desire for repentance that didn't have any desire for saving Faith. They only wanted to be fed that they had no need in their mother for salvation because I hate where the people of God right where the Jews.

Right here in this scene. They're sitting in the synagogue surrounded by Scrolls from the Old Testament.

They believe their Works. We're getting them to heaven. So they mock Jesus. And Jesus says stop grumbling. So this is going from you don't believe to now you're mocking him.

And then where does Jesus go next with these people at this point after their grumbling here and sit up another notch to the same place. He was before verse 44 he wears his response to their gum. Like no one can come to me unless the father who sent me draws him and I will raise him up on the last day. Would you please notice with make that there isn't any softening of the edges of biblical truth in order to gain the favor of these people who have rejected him.

again He goes straight to Divine Sovereign election in his response. He's resting on the fathers Saverin. Will he doesn't say? Okay? Well, that's how you going to be. I'm just going to keep on healing you in preparing meals so that you'll like me and you'll accept me and you'll believe in me know.

He doesn't do that.

Remember right here. We're dealing with the Jewish leaders. They've gone from not believing to mocking and it's important to understand we said before these leaders had huge influence over the crowd member. They probably played a large role in why so many are going to walk away from Jesus later and verse 66. This problem showed up all throughout the ministry of Jesus in with these leaders. They have to do more than just not believe they have to mark as they do here because you have to do that in order to justify your rejection. You have to make a joke out of it if you're going to reject it because they couldn't carry this attitude of remember look just like nicotine cause was clear to everybody just even if it is clearly this man sent from God. I mean nobody could do what he does unless he sent from God. No, man ever spoke like this man spoke with such Authority. He seems to be worthy of belief, but we just don't we rejecting Now once you walked away and refuse to believe especially actually being there and seeing all this from Jesus, you have to mop the message that you rejected just for the preservation of your own bingo in light of what you've seen and experienced.

But notice that Jesus doesn't argue with them one bit. He doesn't change the message. He doesn't own anything down. In fact, he ramps it up to proclaiming very straightforward Lee. Define sovereign election to them you can't call.

and the obvious conclusion

that no person can escape out of that statement is if there are people Who go to hell when they die who did not believe and certainly we know there are then clearly. The father doesn't draw everybody.

the very fact that people in he'll tell us that

he only draws some follow this very carefully. Put these verses together in this order and tell me what you come up with with the meaning of words verse 44. No one can come to me unless the father who sent me draws him the Spurs 65. No one can come to me unless it has been granted him from the father and then verse 37 out of that group all that. The father gives me will. Come to me. And then in verse 39 of all that he is giving me same group as the ones that are drawn the ones that are given all that he has given me I lose nothing. Raise it up on the last day.

There's simply just no way you can put those words together and not come to the conclusion that the father only draws some of humanity. not all but all who are drawn will most certainly definitely absolutely come. I'm almost certainly absolutely be raised up on the last day to eternal life.

And then at the same time. Whosoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

don't pop a blood vessel in your brain trying to work that out. just accept that from God's Viewpoint and his is the only one that matters. Both of those things are equally true. Next Jesus validates this view from the Old Testament in verse 45.

It says it is written in the prophets and they shall all be part of God everyone who has heard and learned from the father. Comes to me so big picture. How does a person come to Christ? The father has to Willett the father has to Granite. The father has to draw and we learn here. The father has to cheat.

That Old Testament quote here in verse 45 is from Isaiah 54:13 and there are similar statements like it found in Jeremiah and Micah and they shall all be taught of God You know, I just decided about 4 years into my Christian faith.

That my understanding of the Christian faith was going to have to come down to the meaning of words in this book. No matter how I might feel. otherwise I just said all there.

And I have found no way around the reality that it is just not in a person's natural power to repent and believe it's just not and the father must draw them or they'll never come. Jesus says

and what part of that drawing is is what Jesus is saying here in verse 45. They shall all be taught of God part of the fathers drawing is when he internally teachers a person's mind the convincing truth of the Gospel.

We're sure saving Faith can't come except through hearing and hearing by the word concerning Christ, but it's not just the extern hearing. It's also the internal hearing. Those who come are the ones that the father Wills to come the ones who the father gives to the son the ones who are drawn by the father and those who come all the ones that the father teaches. This is divine instruction going on in the hearts and the mind that makes one who is unwilling. Willie Remember that I remember when I was unwilling big time. and he made me really he makes us hungry. For the bread of life when previously we were not at all. And how is it? How does the father teach will look at verse 46? Not that anyone has seen the father except the one who is from God. He has seen the father MSP clear. No one has seen the father and you don't go to heaven and see him and come back and write some stupid book about it.

Please don't get fooled by that nonsense cuz every one of them books or nonsense, okay? So, how are you going to get caught by the father of Jesus as well? There is one from God. He has seen the father. So if you're going to be taught by the father, you have to be taught by the one who alone knows the father has seen the father and that's the father-son verse 47 truly truly. I say to you he who believes has eternal life verse 48 in the bread of life.

The father teaches through the son for the gospel of the Son and the spirit while in the neighborhood of explaining how all this works all three persons of the trinity. Hebrews 1 1 2 2 God after he spoke long ago to the father's in the prophets and many portion than him anyways in these last days has spoken to us in his

faith comes by hearing the word concerning Christ. It is comforting to me. I hope it is to you. that Jesus himself finds this confidence in the middle of heartbreaking rejection by leaning hard on the absolute reality and reliability of the fathers will of the fathers Sovereign call and the father's instruction in the heart of a center.

All that the father draws will, everyone in the history of humanity that the father draws will come and Jesus says guess what? I will receive them. Not only that I will keep him and every single one of them out raise them up on the last day that'll bring you comfort if you're a Christian here today. That'll bring you great joy.

What Jesus is offering what he was offering then what he offers now is not about the here in the now. It's about the next life to come. salvation forgiveness security which results in eternal life that last forever in heaven

and it just doesn't matter. If you have all of the American dream in this life that you can absorb or you just have a small piece of the pie. It doesn't matter if you were well known here in this life or you're completely obscure person in the public domain whether you have a lot whether you have little whether you're healthy whether you're sick, if you are a Christian you have Christ and he is sufficient. a sufficient

I will pick it up right there.

Thank you, Jesse Mendez.
