This is a remarkable account of regular ordinary people who, by working together, accomplish something extraordinary.
800 miles from Jerusalem to Susa.
Nehemiahs 3:1-32
Big Idea: Many hands make light work, so do your part .
1. Everyone did their part…except a few (1-5).
Explanation: The first person listed as doing the work is the high priest.
Not one of these people was a professional wall builder.
Rulers, Priests,
Illustration: I love the history of North Hills.
Specifically about when it just started.
Church members literally built Dodson Hall with their hands…lead of course in work and leadership by Brother Gene Dodson.
There is something special about a group of people playing their part in doing what God has called them to do.
As a church gets older, it becomes harder and harder to keep that mentality.
#1 the government doesn’t like you doing that kind of work yourself anymore…but also
Application: What part do you play?
2. They worked next to one another.
Explanation: Chapter 3 is one of the most beautiful pictures of godly teamwork in the entirety of the Bible.
And if you aren’t careful you might miss it because it just looks like a list of names.
But dig a little deeper and you see it.
4 little words....”And next to him” or the plural counterpart “And next to them”.... (28 time in 32 verses it talks about how how they were working along side of each other.)
We’re talking thousands of people shoulder to shoulder all around the entire city…working together.
And next to him.... (28 time in 32 verses it talks about how how they were working along side of each other.)
They worked next to each other in such a way that everyone was working at the same time.
So that rather than building or repairing the wall section by section, the entire wall was being repaired at the same time.
Now this requires a lot of work

Illustration: This past week we had our Sports Camp.
There were over 100 kids aged 4-13.
And we taught them about how to get better at a sports but we also taught them about how the same fundamentals can apply to following Jesus.
Interestingly the very first night we talked about teamwork from Nehemiah.
On a good team everyone knows their role and knows they can rely on others to play theirs.
And God has gifted you in such a way that there is a role on His team that only you can play.
And again, others are depending on you to play it.
But it always helps when you know that you are can depend on the person next to you.
Application: So many people really don’t like working with others.
Many say, “I work alone.”
There are 2 reasons why I think this is so prevalent.
Either you have let someone down or someone has let you down.
We are all burdened by our past.
But this shouldn’t be that way in God’s kingdom.
We respond differently when people let us down.
We forgive and offer encouragement.
Look around you.
Who is next to you?
Now I want to ask you a very important question....can they count on you to play your part?
3.
They worked near their homes (28-32).
Explanation: I think it goes without saying that we would be more inclined to repair a section of the wall if it were directly near our house.
Because that giant hole in the wall directly affects your safety.
Remember these aren’t days of peace.
It was a brutal time.
Illustration:
Application: What are you doing close to home to play your part in God’s family?
Reflection: What part are you playing in the family of God?
Now this was never about rebuilding a wall.
It was always about rebuilding a people.
The first people to build the city walls were likely slaves.
This time the people built it themselves.
It likely wasn’t perfect and may not even have been pretty.
But they did it.
And through this gained a national identity and pride.
But I want to point out one of the gates.
The East Gate or Inspection Gate.
Nestled in verse 29 is so important.
Because it is through this gate that the Messiah would ride through on a donkey.
The Old Testament points towards the coming of Jesus.
