He Defined It

Sin is LAWLESSNESS
1 John 3:4 NKJV
4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.
The word “SIN”
The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament 264. ἁμαρτάνω hamartánō

264. ἁμαρτάνω hamartánō; fut. hamartḗsō, aor. hēmártēsa; 2d aor. hḗmarton. To sin, to miss a mark on the way, not to hit the mark. One who keeps missing the mark in his relationship to God is hamartōlós (268), sinner.

(I) To err, swerve from the truth, go wrong, used in an absolute sense in 1 Cor. 15:34, meaning to beware lest one be drawn into errors pertaining to faith, of which the Apostle is speaking (Titus 3:11).

(II) To err in action, in respect to a prescribed law, i.e., to commit errors, to do wrong, sin.

The word “LAWLESSNESS”

88.139 ἀνομία, ας f: to behave with complete disregard for the laws or regulations of a society—‘to live lawlessly, lawlessness, lawless living.’

A Transgression of The Law of God
2 John 9 NKJV
9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.
A Transgression of The Law of Government
Romans 13:1–3 NKJV
1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same.
1 Peter 2:13–17 NKJV
13 Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, 14 or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men—16 as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. 17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
2 Peter 2:13–17 NKJV
13 and will receive the wages of unrighteousness, as those who count it pleasure to carouse in the daytime. They are spots and blemishes, carousing in their own deceptions while they feast with you, 14 having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children. 15 They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; 16 but he was rebuked for his iniquity: a dumb donkey speaking with a man’s voice restrained the madness of the prophet. 17 These are wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.
2 Pet. 2:13-17
Sin is UNRIGHTEOUSNESS
1 John 5:17 NKJV
17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.
Sin is UNIVERSAL
1 John 1:8–10 NKJV
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

He Differentiated It

1 John 1:
1 John 3:6 NKJV
6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.
1 John 3
1 John 3:9 NKJV
9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
NOT One-Saved-Always-Saved
NOT One-Saved-Always-Saved
It’s the difference between committing sin and being a sinner.
Once-saved-always-saved.
1 John 3:6 NKJV
6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.
“does not sin” - present active / maybe better, “is not a sinner.”
1 John 3:6 ESV
6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.
1 John 3:9 ESV
9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.
Two reasons why the child of God is not a sinner.
“His seed remains in him” (; cf. ; ).
1 John 3:9 NKJV
9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
Luke 8:11 NKJV
11 “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
Psalm 119:11 NKJV
11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.
“he has been born of God” (; cf. ).
1 John 3:9 NKJV
9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
2 Peter 1:4 NKJV
4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

He Delineated It

1 John 5:16 NKJV
16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that.
1 John
The sin not unto death ().
The sin unto to death, then, would be the sin that someone is not willing to confess and repent of.
