Serving through storms

Intro: It had been a busy day. Jesus had feed 1000’s of people with 2 fish and 5 loaves. Elab on the disciples, walking though down the rows of people with the baskets of food. They were already tired, Jesus had told it was time for some rest. But they had learned a great lesson, and teaching was not done yet.
When it comes to serving the Lord, there is always something new to learn.
After this long day, teaching, and feeding Jesus is going to send His disciples away, and He will go (alone) and pray.
This miracle is also covered in Matthew and John. John is the only one that records Peter walking on the water. Why do they tell the story and not cover the same thing? I believe one reason, the message preached is different. Preaching John, the message is focused on Peter.
The disciples once again are going to be going to be in a boat, on the Sea of Galilee. Last time was in Chapter 4. Jesus was in the boat with them, but He was sleeping. This time He was not in the boat with them, but He was praying.
Jesus is always teaching His disciples a lesson. Part of the teaching is that serving Him is not an easy task. There will be smooth days, were everything seems to fall in place. But there are going to be some tough days, storms that will hit, and hit hard. We have to be ready.
Obey, we have o obey His word. That is also something we have to learn.
For the disciples, there would be the final command from Jesus.
Matthew
Matthew 28:19–20 NASB95
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
If they were to obey that command, they needed to learn to obey all He commanded them to do.

I. Learn to obey.

VS 45-46
Mark 6:45 KJV 1900
45 And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.
Mark 6:45 NASB95
45 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away.
Mark 6:
Constrained: GW Means, to compel. make or to force. Jesus had to insist they do this, over their objections.
Maybe them had a strong feeling the a storm was coming. If you a going to serve the Lord and you know it’s going to be a difficult situation, even if you know what you are doing for the Lord is going to end up a storm.
a. For whatever reason, they did not want to leave Jesus. They felt safe when they were with Jesus. They knew He would meet their needs.
b. They needed to learn a lesson on faith, again, this was something that they were continually learning.
c. We can learn more about faith, but we need to be willing to learn. That means had have to willing to obey His words.
Like our Verse this week.
John 15:7 KJV 1900
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
d. Jesus sent the disciples away, but He would still with, he would know what they were going through.
e. As you serve God, there will be storms. God knows all that you are going through. He is always with you.
f. In the O.T Deut. and N.T Heb “I will never leave you or forsake you”
g. As the disciples get into the boat, Jesus stays.
a. John tells some else that happened.
John 6:15 NASB95
15 So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.
Mark 6:46 KJV 1900
46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.
Mark 6:
Mark 6:46 NASB95
46 After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.
Mark 6:
Jesus gets alone, far away from everyone to pray. A time to pour His heart out to the father. To thank Him for provided the need of the people that day. To pray for His disciples as they are about to face a storm.

II. Learn through Experience.

VS 47-52
Mark 6:47 KJV 1900
47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.
Here we come to the heart of the passage, another great learning experience for the disciples. Notice:
1. And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. Mark lets us know that Jesus had not yet been reunited with the disciples. They were in the midst of the sea and Jesus remained alone on the land. The storm would arise during this time of separation.
a. This does not imply that Jesus will desert us when we are facing great adversity, but it does reveal that we too must learn to trust Him even when it appears we are all alone.
b. Unlike the disciples, we have never seen Jesus face to face. We must walk by faith, trusting His unseen hand. We must remember what Jesus was doing during that time of separation – He was praying to the Father. No doubt He was interceding for them. We have comfort knowing our Lord also intercedes on our behalf.
Hebrews 7:25 NASB95
25 Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
Hebrews
Mark 6:48 KJV 1900
48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.
Mark 6:
Mark 6:48 NASB95
48 Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them.
Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
1. Although they were separated physically from Jesus, they were never beyond His watchful eye. As Jesus spent time in prayer, He was aware of their struggles in the midst of the sea. This had become a desperate situation. They were struggling to stay afloat, struggling to row against the wind and waves. These men were terrified by the storm they encountered. (I wonder if they remembered the time before. (other side)
a. It should be comforting for us to know that we are never alone in the journey of life. Like the disciples, we are never beyond the watchful eyes of our Lord. He is continually aware of where we are, what we face, and the many needs we have.
b. It was sometime between 3 and 6 in the morning. John tells us this (forth watch of the night)
c. Jesus knew they were fearful, He saw them struggling, He walks on the water to them. This shows more of He compassion. He could have just let continue to struggle, but He knew that needed Him, their faith was still weak.
d. Look what the verse says “and would have passed by them” NASB “He intended to pass by them” Why didn’t Jesus just step into the boat, and claim the sea, or just claim the sea from where He was? I believe He wanted to get a reaction from them.
f. Jesus is walking beside you, He is walking beside PGBC. Waiting for us to call out to Him. We can’t let Him pass by.
e. Jesus will never leave us or forsake us: But we have to be willing to do our part, we have to be willing to serve Him, to obey Him. And always, even in the good times, and when things are getting a bit stormy and you (we) are struggling, call out tot Jesus. This a big part of a learning experience.
Mark 6:49 KJV 1900
49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:
Mark 6:
Mark 6:49 NASB95
49 But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;
Jesus walking on the water, along beside them. We may be quick to say, why didn’t know that it was Jesus. Put yourself in their place. They had seen Jesus do some awesome things, never seen him walk on the water.
a. We can’t to be judgmental of their lack of faith, but we likely would have responded the same or worse. They had rowed and struggled all night and it was in the early morning hours. In the middlie of a storm comes a figure of a man walking on the water. There times when spiritually we have reacted in much the same way.
b. There have been times in our lives when we faced desperation and were completely unaware that Jesus was near to us. We often focus on the trial, and have so little faith, that we cannot recognize Jesus when He is right there with us.
Mark 6:50 KJV 1900
50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.
Mark 6:50 NASB95
50 for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, “Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid.”
1. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. Just a few word to claim them, to give them assurance.
a.
a. Jesus immediately spoke to them, affirming His identity, and revealing there was no need to fear. Can you imagine the joy and peace this brought to their hearts at that moment? The storm that threatened their lives continued to rage, but Jesus had come!
b. There are many words in God’s word to need us know that we have no need to fear.
Matthew 28:20 NASB95
20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Matthew
Philippians 4:13 KJV 1900
13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Phili
We need to hear His voice when He speaks to us.
a. Jesus know their fear, they just cried out in fear. Jesus lets them know that is okay.
“Be of good cheer” NASB “take courage”
“I is I”
Don’t be afraid”
b. This was a bad storm, they were rowing hard, but on their own power they could do nothing. But
Mark 10:27 KJV 1900
27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.
c. What joy it most have been for them to hear the voice of Jesus. (Matt covers Peter)
d. When you are serving the Lord, and storms, fear, doubt comes you why. What do you do? What will we do as a church?
e. We need to pray before we do anything, pray before we get started. Pray will help when the storms do come our way, because they will. Like Jesus was walking on the water when the disciples where in the storm, He walking beside you, beside us too. We have to call out to Him. Don’t let Him pass by. Alone Him to claim our fears.

Mark 6:
Mark 6:51 KJV 1900
51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.
Mark 6:51 NASB95
51 Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished,
Notice something, Jesus didn’t say be still and the wind stopped like before. This time as soon as He steps into the boat the wind stops.
Mark
Mark 6:52 KJV 1900
52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.
Mark 6:
Mark 6:52 NASB95
52 for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.
Mark 6:52 AMP
52 For they failed to consider or understand [the teaching and meaning of the miracle of] the loaves; [in fact] their hearts had grown callous [had become dull and had lost the power of understanding].
1. Just a few hours prior, they had experienced a great miracle,Elab: and now they feared for their lives with little faith. They allowed the intensity of their current situation to create doubt and fear in their hearts.
a. Its easy to look that their situation and talk their lack of faith. But, if we are all honest, we’ve done the same thing.
Again, I am sure we would have responded much the same, but a lack of faith is never pleasing to our Lord. Like the disciples, we have experienced the Lord’s power and provision, and yet we are quick to forget. We often allow circumstances to hinder our faith and create an attitude of fear and doubt. We must continue to trust the Lord, believing in faith, regardless of the situation.
b. If it would ave us you and me, I am sure we would have responded much the same, but a lack of faith is never pleasing to our Lord.
c. Like the disciples, we have experienced the Lord’s power and provision, and yet we are quick to forget. We often allow circumstances to hinder our faith and create an attitude of fear and doubt. We must continue to trust the Lord, believing in faith, regardless of the situation.
