Good morning - good to be back
I heard great things about the last two weeks
And today I want to piggy back off of Todd’s message last week.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are back in our series on being weird.
Or better put, choosing to be what the world calls weird when life is not working.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you ever felt like you could not get out of your own way?

Life is going pretty well and then you happen to it?
You do something stupid to blow your life up?
Problem is - you always seem to blow your life up?
Or maybe your dealing with a behavior that controls you and you cannot seem to get free.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, you are not alone!
The Apostle Paul dealt with this issue and explained that self destructive behavior is the common behavior of man.
Romans 7:15–25 NLT
I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.
Maybe you are like me and at times you feel just like Paul did.
Take a moment and ask yourself - What behavior, mindset, fear is controlling your life?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are two ways to handle the problem of self-destructive behavior.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The way of popular culture and the way of Scripture.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The way of the world is conformity -
Take pride in and celebrate your self destructive behavior. (Can’t fix it so, accept it as your perfect self.)
As Froyed would say embrace your animal nature.
We are naturally good and just need to embrace our so called weaknesses as God intended.
Notice Paul, calls these weaknesses sin and not virtue.
Moral Comparison - You can’t tell me I am in the wrong. Look at you!
Conformity does not offer a cure to your destructive behavior, it only gives you a moral cover to hide under.
Scripture is clear
Romans 12:2 NLT
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Conformity says - Embrace yourself, all your imperfections, God don’t make junk, you are who God wants you to be.
The Scriptures call us to Transformation - Becoming A New Person.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today, I want to share with you five Biblical steps towards being transformed.

Two things you need to know first.
This process is on going and will need to be part of your life in Christ until the resurrection.
Transformation is a miracle, just ask the Caterpillar, but it also takes your participation.
Philippians 2:12–13 NLT
Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stopping the rat wheel of death and being transformed into a new person.

Awe and Trembling before God.

Proverbs 1:7 NLT
Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Fear God - How you see God will determine how you view yourself.
We must see God as perfection - perfect Love, perfect Beauty, perfect truth.
Now tell me how can you stand before perfection without fear?

See yourself in the light of God’s Perfection.

God’s perfect love let’s me see my own selfishness and insecurities.
God’s perfect Beauty let’s me recognize my own ugly hatred, my pride and arrogance, my desire to control.
Seeing God as Truth allows me to recognize the shallowness of my own wisdom and the false wisdom of this world.
When we open our eyes to God’s perfection it diagnoses the human problem. We are not God - We are not our salvation.
