Introduction
Last week we delt with how to deal with Church dicipline
THis week we are going to look at an istence in needs to be carried out
Rember dicipline can be a verry good thing an healthy churches go through it regularly
the point is restoration
This passage stresses the need for Christian action and warns agains usless discussion.
Some people think of themselves as religious because they discuss religious questions.
It is much easier to discuss theological questions than to be kind and considerate and helpful at home, or efficient and conscientious and honest at work.
There is no vurtue in sitting and discusssing deep theological questions when the simple tasks of the christian life are waiting to be done such discussion can be nothing other than avoidence of Christian duities
Paul was certain that the real task for Christians lay in Christian action.
That is not to say that there is no place for Christian discussion; but the discussion which does not end in action is very largely wasted time.
I. Things to Avoid
A. Avoid
Foolish questions
Geneologies
Contentiousness
Strivings about the law
They are unprofitable
Avoid foolish Questions
This is a common theme that Paul deals with throughout the eppisles.
Do not make a big deal over minor things, don’t allow arguments over things that simply do not matter to dictate an agenda
Paul mentiones this multiple times through the pastoral eppislles
The point being avoiding foolish debate
Some examplees of foolish debate today
What to wear to church
what time services are
how many services you have
Some bible translations (there are bad translatins)
What syle of music
Geneologies
This acctual word is only used twice in all of the Bible the other instence is in 1 tim 3:4
The Jewish Rabbis spent there time building up imaingenary geneologies for the charecters of the old testement this is what Paul is dealing warning against
Contentiousness
Avoid unesesary strife
Contentiousness
Some Strife is unavoidable
we should make a Big deal about
The virgin Birth
The trinity
Contentiousness
The sufficency of scripture
the death and bodaly reserection of Christ
Christ’s mirilcles.
If someone in the church activly teaches against theese things we will absolutly push against it.
Strivings about the law
Strivings about the law
The Jewish scribes spent endless hours discussing what could and couldnot be done on the sabbeth, and what was and was not unclean
They are unprofitable
Paul says all theese things are not profitable.
and to get rid of them.
let us be a church that makse a big deal about the things that are a big deal, and does not make a big deal over things that are not a big deal
We need to stand for the truth that is found in God’s word
we need to not die on a hill of our personal desires or preferences
THis is what Paul is warning about those who cause disunity because of there preferences
I have asked you this before I will ask it again
“Is there any preference today that is more importent to you than people comming to christ and people that are in Christ comming back to Church”
if the answe is yes change your heart!
Change happends in the church and it should
God does not call the church to exist he calls the church to thrive!
Reject the one who is disunifying (V.
10-11)
A. THe disunifying man
Paul goes on to say don’t just reject the arguments and the things that don’t matter, but reject the man who is disunifying.
The word used in the KJV is a Heretick, however it litterally means “the one who stirs up division
let me read the ESV for you
What does Paul tell us to do with this person?
Give them two warnings
Then reject Him
The idea here simmilar to if the person rejects the warnings it is a clear sign the individual is wrapped in sinful behavior and therfore he is self condemed.
B. Why do we need to reject?
Because He is wrapped in Sin
Rember mattherw 18 last week if the offender has been given three chances to repent he is to be cut off
That is a similar warning paul is giving to the believers in thesolinica.
If an individual is a disunifying agent in the church and has been given pultiple warnings they condem themselves because they reject the warnings leadership has given them
Here though Paul is warning titus that as a pastor he has to deal with this kind of sin in the church.
Application
What things that can lead to disunity
Gosip
Falure to confront Bullies
Church members who are self serving
Lack of prayer
Fear of confrentation
no Church dicipline
just to name a few
What can fight against disunity
dealing with the problum head on
rember attack the problum not the person
In all of this howver it must be rememberd that not every small thing needs to be delt with
However one that is spreading desention within the chuch needs to be delt with
