(NASB95)
Jeremiah 17:7–10 NASB95
7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord And whose trust is the Lord. 8 “For he will be like a tree planted by the water, That extends its roots by a stream And will not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green, And it will not be anxious in a year of drought Nor cease to yield fruit. 9 “The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? 10 “I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.
(NASB95)
7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord
And whose trust is the Lord.
8 “For he will be like a tree planted by the water,
That extends its roots by a stream
And will not fear when the heat comes;
But its leaves will be green,
And it will not be anxious in a year of drought
Nor cease to yield fruit.
9 “The heart is more deceitful than all else
And is desperately sick;
Who can understand it?
10 “I, the Lord, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give to each man according to his ways,
According to the results of his deeds.
I want to look at the language here. The heart is…..
Is what? More deceitful than all else
It is desperately sick.. Who can understand it?
The question from this is what is the heart?
The word here in the Hebrew is the word Leb
Meaning mind, will, or heart
It is also translated at times to the work encourage, imagination, intelligence, conscience.
So heart here is mind.
Its even deeper than mind is desires
So replace heart with desires.
The Desires (of man) is more deceitful than all else
Now lets look a bit at context.
Verse 7
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord
And whose trust is the Lord.
Blessed is the man how trust.
So this is the question I would like to raise to you.
Can God be trusted with my heart?
Notice verse 8
For he will -
Notice verse 10
be like a tree planted by the water, That extends its roots by a stream
And will not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green,
Will not -
And it will not be anxious in a year of drought
cease to yield fruit.
The man who trust the Lord will remain secure and steady in hard times.
and will not be overcome with fear. you will remain fruitful
nocice the writer tell us how much our heart actually needs God
Jeremiah 17:9 NASB95
9 “The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?
j
then he ask, Who can understand it…
meaning it complicated
the answers that question in the next verse
Jeremiah 17:10 NASB95
10 “I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.
Notice verse 10
10 “I, the Lord, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give to each man according to his ways,
The lord will search the heart and test the mind.
What is the heart? The mind.
Even to give to each man according to his ways
His own way? His own desires….
I am reminded of when Jesus rebukes peter and says.
Matthew 16:22–23 NASB95
22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” 23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
(NASB95)
22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.”
23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests (or Desires), but man’s.” (Or your own)
Now notice peter wanted to do a good thing, but his intentions or desire is wrong
Some of us have good idea and good intentions but the inwardness or desire behind it is itself selfish and wrong.
And Jesus rebuke him because he knew peter true desire and heart.
Who can understand it?
10 “I, the Lord, search the heart,
God only knows the heart of man.
1 Samuel 16:7 NASB95
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
tells us that
tells us that
God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
The heart is more deceitful than all else
I would like to say this speaks of a heart that is not place its trust in the lord and come under the work of sanctification.
Paul call this heart or mind the carnal mind
Carnal speaks of fleshly
Notice what he says about the carnal mind
Romans 8:6–7 KJV 1900
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
(KJV 1900)
Its death, its hostile to God, and not subject to his laws
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Its death, its hostile to God, and not subject to his laws
Our desires are naturally are selfish.
And we can even deceive ourself to think that we are right when in actuality we are at war with God desires and heart for our life.
Just because it the first thought that come into your head or heart does not mean its God.
I had a beautiful dinner with Kyle and Michelle
And michelle is a preacher yall and she talk me about how ofter time we just do things out of habit and don’t acknowledge God at all in our decision making.
We get a headache and immediately take an aspirin instead of saying “hey, the lord gave me authority above this headache.”
Often time our first though is how will this benefit me.
Not how will this benefit God’s kingdom and his heart.
Or his desires
“The heart is more deceitful than all else
And is desperately sick;
Who can understand it?
It is sick….
When some thing is sick we go to something that specializes in that specific thing..
When I get a cold I don’t go to the vet
You break you leg you don’t go the the heart hospital
When you heart is sick you go the one whos expertise is the heart.
Who can understand it? I know someone.
Anytime our heart is broken..
Well I know someone how understand and knows broken hearts.
Isaiah 61:1 NASB95
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners;
says,
Exaltation of the Afflicted
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
Because the Lord has anointed me
To bring good news to the afflicted;
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
Jesus makes sure know he the heart Doctor when he reinforce this in reading this text in
He is the mender of hearts.
Broken hearted can speak of disappointments and broken dreams
Hurts
If only we would trust in the Lord
whose trust is the Lord.
8 “For he will be like a tree planted by the water,
That extends its roots by a stream
And will not fear when the heat comes;
But its leaves will be green,
And it will not be anxious in a year of drought
Nor cease to yield fruit.
David says
Psalm 139:23–24 NASB95
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; 24 And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.
(NASB95)
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me and know my anxious thoughts;
24 And see if there be any hurtful way in me,
And lead me in the everlasting way.
David also says
Psalm 51:17 NASB95
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
(NASB95)
God will not turn away from a broken heart.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.
God will not turn away from a broken heart.
To one who is filled with disappointment and heaviness
Weather its disappointments with God or with themselves
The Father is the potter and mender of all brokenness
Jeremiah 18:1–6 NASB95
1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord saying, 2 “Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will announce My words to you.” 3 Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something on the wheel. 4 But the vessel that he was making of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he remade it into another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make. 5 Then the word of the Lord came to me saying, 6 “Can I not, O house of Israel, deal with you as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.
:1-6

we can trust him with our desires and dreams and hope..
Psalm 37:4 NASB95
4 Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.
(NASB95)
4 Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.
Before he gives us the desire of our heart he must first chnge our hearts
Giving us his desires
He can be trusted
