Philippians 3:12 ESV
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.
In verse 12 we have a few key words:
Obtained
This
Perfect
But
Press
ME
Own
*Slide One* Everyone has a “This”
Verse 10 & 11 in Philippians deals with our “This” of the text
Philippians 3:10–11 ESV
that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
That I may know him
The power that resurrected Jesus from the dead.
To participate in His (Christ) suffering (Identification with Christ).
To participate in His death (Dying almost the same type of death of Christ).
“That by any means possible” (Either by the return of Christ or through death).
Resurrection of the dead or Eternal life with Christ
(Remember) Paul was a theologian in Eschatology, which is the Study of future events.
1 Corinthians
1 Corinthians 15:51–53 ESV
Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.
Our This = Goals
*Slide two* - This = Goals
“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect”
Obtained - To secure / To achieve / Reach / Take hold of
Perfect - To be made complete / To be completely successful / To finish one’s course
Paul is basically saying “I have not secured my goals neither am I dead.”
*Slide Three* - Everyone “This” is not the same
Without us knowing but our “This” is our drive in life
*Slide Four* - Everyone has a “Press”
“but I press on to make it my own”
But - is very important to bring into play the contrast of the press!
Press: To speed on / Run to / My entire attention is on the finish line
Press = Attention
My attention is on my “this” which becomes my finishing line but I’ll do whatever it takes to secure it.
Make It My OWN!!!!!!
This is the formula for understanding how people operate:
I want a relationship
I want more material things
I searched on google about top goals:
Enjoying life
Being Healthy
Being Happy
Achieving intellectual growth
pursuing ideas and passions
having financial freedom
having close friendships
When these thing become my “This” then it becomes my “Press”
In leadership this has taught me why people “do what they do”
People are giving their time but it’s to their “This”
People are giving their money but it’s to their “This”
People are volunteering their energy but it to their “This”
When these thing become my “This” then it becomes my “Press”
*Slide* Why should my “This” Change?
“because Christ Jesus has made me his own”
Jesus had a “This” and a “Press”
The key would in this clause is “ME”
When you can understand that I was his “This”
Pastor J quote “Just because you have chosen something, doesn’t mean you have purchased it.”
I was his “This” (His Goal) and His this became his “Press” (Attention)
I was His finishing line!!!
*Slide* My This Vs. His This
All Jesus is asking for us to do is make Him our “THIS”
