Why Rest

Mark 6:6–9 HCSB

And He was amazed at their unbelief. Now He was going around the villages in a circuit, teaching. He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the road except a walking stick: no bread, no traveling bag, no money in their belts. They were to wear sandals, but not put on an extra shirt.

So they went out and preached that people should repent. And they were driving out many demons, anointing many sick people with olive oil, and healing them.

This set of verses marks the first time Jesus sent the 12 out to minister. We sometimes forget about this occurence but it happened while Jesus was still alive.

Sometimes we need to step back from the things that bring us down.

This lyric is familiar to many the song itself is all about people looking to get away from the things in life. things that you have to go back to things that won’t just go away but none the less they are real and sometimes we need to step back from them so we can deal with them in a better way.

But I’m not tired!

There is a false narrative in Christianity in general that tells us true servants of God are always exhausted because of all the hard work of being a Christian that they are doing.

The disciples had been out working they had been doing amazing things, called and equipped by God to take a message to the people in the region.

Sometimes there is a false sense of energy and vitality and ability that comes from the highs of a job well done..from positive results. When you constantly run on adrenaline things seem great at first but… if you keep doing so you will end up crashing and burning pretty spectacularly

Come Away!

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to Him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.

We need to get away by ourselves

We need to get to a place that’s hard to find

We need to rest…stop…pause…don’t dwell on or think about or even try and figure out.

We need to take time to feed ourselves…and not just spiritual food.

Get in the Car or in this case the Boat!

So they went away in the boat by themselves to a remote place,

All the planning in the world does no good unless you actually do it.
