Intro: Confession good for the soul bad for the reputation. Confession removes your shame and guilt but pride will stop your from confession. This pride leads to denial that leads to blindness to the hurt and pain that is around them because it is not from a result of their behavior. Confession comes after acceptance of the sin in your life and the affects it has on you and those around you. When you can acknowledge your fault and decide to change your behavior. With confession and acceptance one is now open for healing to enter into your life.
This same kind of healing is available in our our walk with Jesus. God has provided the healing but we have to acknowledge our sin and our issues in our life in the presence of the Holiness of God.
Aim: Confession is our response in the presence of God as we worship him with our life to do His perfect will.
Lead into text: Preceding the fifth chapter of Luke we see in the beginning of Jesus public ministry in after the testing and fasting in the Wilderness Jesus returns to Galilee area. We see how God’s will can impact our daily life.
Worship God who is active in our life.
Worship God who is active in our life.
1 One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. 2 He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.
Jesus is preaching and the crowds are large to hear him. Notice how God can include you to help him in doing his will. Simon was not planning on helping Jesus preach the gospel. He was finishing doing his work of fishing.
Be available to serve God.
Be available to serve God.
Serving God is worship.
Peter in doing his daily job was in a position to serve Jesus, the Son of God.
How can you serve Jesus as you do your job?
Simon was now apart of the ministry.
Simon was now apart of the ministry.
Jesus was preaching and now Simon is listening to this teaching.
Simon was open to be used by Jesus.
He gave Jesus what he had to be used for the ministry.
Simon was patient and sat under Jesus teaching.
There is a blessing in obedience
There is a blessing in obedience
We know the Lord loves those who love him an obey his commands.
6 But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
Jesus asked Simon:
Push the boat into the water.
Go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”
Jesus looks to bless Simon for his service.
Jesus looks to bless Simon for his service.
Notice this is after he gets done speaking. This is also now some time after he got done fishing at the proper time and came up empty handed. So Simon naturally has some hesitation but he obeys him.
Luke 5:5-7
5 “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” 6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! 7 A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.
How does Simon respond?
He calls Jesus Master.
Looks to trust Jesus by saying, “But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”
What was the result of his obedience?
This time their nets were full of fish.
The last time with out Jesus they were empty.
Simon needed help to bring in the load.
6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! 7 A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.
Luke 5:
When the Lord comes by your way.
When the Lord comes by your way.
God’s involvement in your life is truly awesome. May I point out that Jesus gave suggestions to Simon and Simon responded in the affirmative. He could have said no, but thank God he said yes. Can you look over your life and see where you are glad you too said yes to Jesus instead of no. Yes, to your will Lord. Yes, to your forgiveness. Yes, Lord I will go where you will send me. Because of a yes we have seen the power of God move in our life.
There has to be a self awareness in the presence of Jesus.
Denial should not be your character trait.
Denial is stopping your healing.
You need to be open to grow and to change.
Closed mindedness will hinder your growth.
Simon saw the glory of the Lord and weakness of his own character.
Simon saw the glory of the Lord and weakness of his own character.
8 When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.” 9 For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him.
8 Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!” 9 Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking! But this miracle happened on the Sabbath,
John 5:8-10
Simon fell to his knees before Jesus.
Simon submits in position of prayer and confesses.
When we are awaken to the presence of God we should bow down in reverence and confess our sins.
Confession is a response to worship.
3 Who may climb the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? 4 Only those whose hands and hearts are pure, who do not worship idols and never tell lies.
In the presence of holiness we see we are not holy.
In the presence of holiness we see we are not holy.
We are made holy by Jesus.
Jesus can use us. Thank God!
Jesus power is not limited by our issues.
Jesus power is not limited by our issues.
Simon’s availability has nothing to do with Jesus’s ability.
Jesus power is not limited by our issues.
Jesus does not force us but invite us to be apart of this Kingdom.
Jesus knows your status
Will you be open to his help?
Will you accept Jesus or deny Him?
Therefore acceptance is key and denial has to be removed.
Reflection:
Reflection:
What is your response in following Jesus?
My worship is hindered by my lack of submission, confession, humility.
I can not get a break through in my life because I am not open to let Jesus in.
Need to be available:
Simon and his resources were available for the work of the Lord.
